I knew of Grimes but never gave her a listen. After stumbling on the Violence music video I was hooked and anticipating the album. For me the album is great and made me into a new fan 🤷🏽‍♀️

I think she released one or two too many teaser songs, had i heard songs like 4 ÆM or Violence for the first time, I think I would have enjoyed the album more. So of all the songs I didn't know before I only care for IDORU really..

So heavy I fell through the earth is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL + breathtaking song. Were we listening to the same music? It reminded me of Bjork or something along the lines, it is very cinematic, especially as you've given better reviews to way shittier music than this song/album. She produced it all herself as well. This review is so meh.

I love this album. Feel like I'm listening to a Matrix soundtrack with a blend of 90's nostalgia and future techno/pop. So basically, it's hard to describe the tone of this album, and I love it. Something different and ambitious.

At first listen its underwhelming and doesn't shout out like Grimes' other songs but honestly its so good the more you listen to it, you are floating in a future world where emotion still exist.. Love, sadness, partying even though the world is ending. Its amazing and unique to me, dark and light all of the same time.

the biggest problem i have with this is you either haven’t done any research about her or you have misinterpreted her as an artist. you keep critiquing her vocals when grimes has stated several times that she isn’t a singer and doesn’t want to be. she’s a producer and focuses on the sonics and concept of a song, that’s why it sounds a bit weird and unconventional, and sometimes messy but it’s supposed to. that’s literally the entire point of her music, to sound different and otherworldly, because she is a concept artist. i rly think you were expecting her to make more poppy music like art angels and that’s why you were let down,, but i rly don’t think that’s her type of music anymore - of course you can have your opinion but i really feel like you’ve just really misinterpreted what this album was supposed to be

I absolutely love this album, not sure how the atmosphere, melodies & artistic aesthetic didn’t sit well with him. It’s a very dark album with an angelic pop vibe. Good concepts that touch on subjects like the opiate epidemic, suicide, motherhood, climate change, AI. I think it’s her best work. Crazy how art can hit people differently.

I’ve been in a music rut and was really missing the feeling of hearing something for the first time, like hearing Punk music as a kid. And I put on this album and I actually felt that it was nuts to me. I loved it. But yeah grimes seems pretty divisive just cause she’s so out there.

Since he was wearing a red flannel, I thought it would be worse than a 4/10 tbh.

i thought this album was so DIY and perfect that the imperfections are my favorite parts. I love that she does the unconventional route for everything. First listen I never understand, but her music always makes sense to me after a couple of listens. It's cool she has music that sounds different from a first listen to a second, i appreciate (power) her for that

Melon putting Delete Forever as a fave just shows how and why he really liked Art Angels. A lot of the fans will gravitate more to this newest album largely because they relate to the darker atmosphere of her earlier materials. I think preference just speaks for itself. I do have a bias for AA. I see the like/dislike ratio as justified. Listen to the album yourself if you havent yet.

I was expecting the first nine in a while, or at least an eight. FOUR?

I’ve seen a few comments about people getting into grimes recently with this album and I belong to that category. I’ve also recently listened to art angels(2015) and visions(2012), and out of those my order of preference is AA, MA, visions. These three albums have very different styles of music, AA has so many insanely catchy, really well made tracks, and visions is definitely a lot more experimental but there are some really fun and beautiful songs on it. As for MA, like some other commenters I had to listen to it multiple times before I started liking more of the songs, and I now like 7/10. My favorite is Delete Forever. I know melon re listens to songs multiple times before forming his opinions, so he obviously just didn’t vibe with this album. That being said, I was really surprised how he talked about the lyrics in violence. I understand this review was made about a week after the album was released, but still, I don’t think it’s right to speculate that heavily on what lyrics mean without some context. Actually Apple Music has a write up that explains about the album and what each song is about, including violence. He basically ruined anyone’s chances of actually enjoying that song by calling it “glorifying relationship abuse”. Like wtf man. Honestly I thought it was about bdsm when I first heard it, but..it’s about video games for Christ’s sake. I watch melon bc he often has good insight and seems to research well, but I wonder if this review would’ve been different had he waited for her to do a few interviews to explain the concept of the album and the songs.

I feel like grimes is on the very critical phase of her creative career. She has also said that art angels was supposed to be her first legitimate album, but ended up calling it trash too. I think she's trying to find somethig she's comfortable in, and it will be hard for artists of her nature. Naturally, it also translates to a VERY WIDE variety of reception to her very different albums. So I kinda agree with this review, but will also sympathize with the 'backlash'
