It was about time I turned my attention to the docks. Not in any way a definitive history of Grimsby docks but I hope people find it informative.

If only this was filmed in early 1960's? 20:20 hindsight?

Really enjoyed the vid, I worked on the dock from 1972 going down with my grandad doing a saturday job. Then during school holidays till 1976 when I started with F A Petersons, my grandad Alf Aisthorpe was foreman in the smokehouse on Henderson St. I worked on the pontoon with Arthur Peterson, great memories, thanks for posting.

Thank you so much for sharing. Your video is so informative and the music is great. So much so I thought I would share the following with you. My father served his engineering apprenticeship with George F SLEIGHT of Grimsby Ltd in the early 1930s. Those were the days when the docks were crammed full of trawlers, and so closely moored together, that the men and boys could just step from one to another to service the trawlers. On one occasion, while working at Campbell's Jetty (West Side), my father attempted this, but the gap suddenly widened, and he landed in the heavily-polluted dock's water. Wooden barrels had to be thrown down between the two trawlers to stop them drifting together again. Severe damage to one of his lungs was the result. He then completed his apprenticeship. However, due to the custom in those days as told to me, soon as a boy finished his apprenticeship and therefore qualified for an increase in his wages, he would be dismissed, and replaced with another apprentice. A permanent move 'down south' to a large motor industry with his engineering skills, and a long family life was the happy ending. And me, an annual summer holiday in the Grimsby area with my various relations, and sitting on Cleethorpes' beach, regardless of the weather, eating cockles or candyfloss, building sandcastles or having the occasional donkey-ride. Heaven!

Thank you for the encouraging feedback. I glad you enjoyed the video. You memories are most welcome and add to the overall historical noise my channel is intended to be part of. One hopes that 100 years from now these videos, and comments from people like yourself, can give those future generations a greater understanding of how things were before they existed. Does that make any sense Katietoo? Regarding the Sleights, my Hainton Ave/Heneage Road video has some interesting info about some their fleet names. I do clearly understand and totally agree with you. I have been a proud member of the Lincolnshire Family History Society for many years. They are all a very hard-working group of people with the united mission of collecting, preserving and making these these findings (be they paper or solid items) available for studying by all the various fields of historians. Like you with your videoing of the many different facets of Grimsby and its life for future generations, I am sure you have thought about contacting your nearest Museum or Archive, requesting if they would like the videos, so they may be properly stored and shared. Your videos are priceless, and so is your dedication in producing them. Thank you. TC

Crikey! We need a voice down in the bubble that is London. We used to be a big important Town now we are washed away. Well we are a Freeport yet no one , big manufacturers, trade comes here. We have infristuctutre, docks can handle large ships, rail, motorway, yet sod all is used. It’s like having a dog and barking yourself with this country at the moment. 😢

I knew the north wall stacked out with trawlers and the coaling towers, the dock gates, the unloading docks and the fish market well from my many visits with my father in the 1950s. I have his scale model of the Boston Fury. (GY188). I hardly recognised anything from your film. Times change but not necessarily for the better.

I was with the British Transport Police for 15 years on the docks,1970 to 1985, and couldn't recognise much of the filming, what a change!

You missed the north wall out with lots of old buildings and history.

Sorry about that Robert. I hope the ommision didn't completely rule out any enjoyment of the video. One of the problems with making these kind of videos is trying not to make them too long. This is only a hobby of mine and the time it takes to edit the videos gets me into enough trouble with the missus as it is. In the past I have had to break down some subjects into a series of videos, like my lost pub tour series, and even then some things can get missed. I do hope to return to the docks, in the future, to pick up a few more things including a better insight into the Dock Tower (if I can get permission that is), so I will be able to include the area you are dissapointed about missing. Thanks for watching anyway.

Loved the video, a real good insight into the docks, just a question I see when you were entering the docks you went like past a control point, can anyone drive onto the docks or will they stop you?

Hi Mark. Thanks for watching and commenting. I glad you enjoyed the video. Regarding the security detail at the entrance to the docks, anyone can go in but they might stop you and ask you where, on the docks, you are going. All you need to say is that you're picking someone up (wife, mum, sister etc) from Youngs or something and they'll wave you through. As a taxi I usually get waved in but, occasionally, they ask me where I'm going and write my number plate down. Once you're on there no one seems to bother you. Cheers.

Thanks Mr Hackney, brought back quite a few memories from my time down there 72-76. It was a lot busier then of course.

Strange seeing you drive over Corporation Bridge as it’s been shut for over a year and a half now and is not due to reopen again until July 2025.
