Literally just game me an “ahh haa” moment!! Thanks very much for this simple, yet useful example. I’m just getting started in this hobby and the struggle has been real.
The beauty of it all, no matter who says what or who does what- You're creating an original. And originals are not like anything else. I like your approach on life and your knife shop as you know.. Keeping it simple is numero uno! You are among a select group who understands as I do, very little is needed to live a good life. Cheers!
Been blacksmithing for a few years and have gotten to thinking about making a knife. i knew trying to freehand a bevel would not go well. came across your video, thankfully, and problem solved. Enjoyed watching a well done and informative video.
Thank you so much I am just starting out, on a semi-budget and the bevel has been my biggest issue, also mostly forging with some belt sander cleanup at the end Thanks for keeping it so simple
Great video. I'm definitely switching from my over engineered, inconsistent jig to a block of wood. I might need to build a wider table, but it will be well worth it. Thanks!
looking good, every one has to learn and it's nice your sharing with all those would be knife makers as you all go down the same trail and different times. Happy Trails
hay man those are all hand made knives.. any imperfection is the beauty of a hand made thing. Looks to me like you are on your way to making some cool knives.. just keep at it. and ENJOY what you do. J
Still playing catchup here. I've watched other videos with $250 jigs and vises and other fancy equipment. It sure is nice to see what one can do with simple ingenuity and a wooden stick. Thanks Dave.
A very enjoyable look "over your shoulder", Dave! Love the Bushradical logo as well ... really appreciate you taking the time to show the processes you're using. Excited to see your shop at work :) Later ... God Bless
Excellent and instructional video Dave Whipple. I keep my beard long so I have an excuse to stay out of the BL3 Lab at our University. Also, to stay away from confined spaces and the respirator program.
Not bad grinds man. I can see in the video that you are leading into the belt at the plunge and not flat (5:08) that is why its coming up high. Approach the belt at the belly and work back to the plunge until it is flat on the platen, then pull it out to the tip. Your grinds will be spot on. Hope that helps.
Those are going to be some damn fine blades, I'd much rather have one of these than any of the "Factory" made, high-end knives, anyday Dave. Really nice work, and man, that's gotta be satisfying as your putting the finishing touches on. I'm kinda itching to bust out my KME kit, too!
Bring the tip of the knife a little it will help keep the plunge area from getting higher than the rest of the bevels.been makeing for 20 plus year....I do like your KISS method
TWO in ONE day?!? Someones been to town;) my old eye would need a scribe line, but otherwise, I would do exactly the same. According to the dozens of vidya's I've seen so far, anywho. If you ever plan on selling blanks, sign me up, bro. I have a big 'ol box of scales and handles I've been cutting out, in between knives. I actually enjoy hours of sanding. Weird, I know;)
Brother, I said it before, you're an awesome instructor/teacher Dave! I love all your channels! Hey, ever thought about a guitar channel?? I'm so immature! lol! Great channel Davebro!! Jack - Canada
Hey Dave it looks good there than knives you're doing a good job there and when I was telling you before was about the wood maybe you could try rocket stove you can make it out of some men brick blocks you can look it up on RU-vid how you make it or maybe you know how to make it already but that's just a suggestion or maybe you can do it what what you have there just I rather not see you spend money on propane if you can use wood and thank you for the video I appreciate it
Would it work to instead of cutting the block of wood at a true 90 to cut it at like a 10 or less degree angle and then just use the same method of clamping and grinding instead of changing the table angle? Love this idea though great job!!
Hello Dave, thanks for another informative video. You are quite the Renaissance man. Are you selling the knives that you make? You do have a great deal of patience. Be safe and have fun. 🤗
I'll have my first batch of knives for sale in a day or so ( eBay) . I'm heading for Alaska right after that so I won't have any other knives until fall.
Hey Ann. I should have about 12 ready to sell this week. I'll post a video announcement and put them up on eBay for auction.....I won't have any more knives until fall ( when I get back from Alaska. ( I'm leaving soon)
I have a little chart that tells you how high up the blade each angle will go with any given thickness.....other Scandi knives I have with the same thickness of blades are about a 10 degree and go about 3/8" up the blade. A Saber grind on 1/8 stock would be about a 4.8......but I just use 5. I think a full flat grind on 1 1/4" stock would be about a 3 degree
