Nice giant donkey dude! That's where our sheepshead migrate for the summer! You can hit them pretty much the same here all winter. Bridge, chop off some barnacles to chum them up, drop a fiddler on a jig head or hook with split shot up the leader a bit. /FloridaMan I have a few Pursuit 3 2500's, they're great reels for the money. It's no spinfisher, but it's 100 bucks cheaper. Got one on a Berkeley Amp rod I paid about 40 bucks for. 100 bucks for a rod, reel, full of braid ... hard to beat!
I've got to get down there to catch them in the winter! As a kayak fisherman I try very hard to find quality yet inexpensive gear. You never know when you are going to lose something overboard. To your point...no it isn't a Spinfisher, but the Pursuit is definitely worth more than its cost.
@@FatDadFishing About 3 weeks ago I had my Spinfisher V 4500 liveliner get yanked off a dock, into the drink. Not a floating dock - bottom rung of the ladder was just out of the water (low tide) and the lower 2-3 rungs crusted with barnacle / oyster. Suffice to say, I wasn't about to let the ocean take another $250 from me that day. Rod in one hand, barnacle crusted ladder overhead in water over my head... I got a little cut up - but I got that rod back! I got the mojarra that took it down too! If that had been one of my Pursuits, the ocean could have kept it for sure. There is DEFINITELY something to be said for cheap gear. That - was not my day, even though I hooked up on a tarpon with that very same mojarra as bait!
Fort Desoto campground in St Petersburg. 3 miles by boat to the skyway bridge. It's off the chain over there. I'm in south (east) florida, and spots to get gigantic sheepshead are much fewer and further between. Wait til that water temp chills out some. I'm usually over there around christmas, they're there earlier though. Probably from around October - Feb over there maybe march, it varies a bit. That bridge has an old bridge that's been turned into 2 of the biggest fishing piers I've ever seen. You drive your car to wherever you're going to fish ...
Wow cool stuff. I am a new inside member. I just subscribed. Ill see you in the spring. Inflatable guy with a 20hp mercury. Usually go in under the Avalon Blvd bridge. was a great spot this past late summer and fall. Also did a trip with Dan Shaffer out of stone harbor. Ill be following. Hope to see you out there!!
Welcome to the Insider Community! Let's make sure we get together on the water sometime. I actually fish year-tound if you want to hit some winter fishing but spend a lot of time down in Cape May County in the summers as well. You'll almost certainly see me out there at some point during the year.
Outstanding video, Rich!! Had I known your day was going to go so well, I would have put the flounder fishing on hold, hit spotlock and filmed you. Absolutely awesome job all the way around!
They aren't always there, but when they are...hold onto that rod. Great fighters whether they are larger or smaller. Let us know when you get your first!
Congrats! Sounds like you are having a great season so far. I would estimate the two largest in the 8-9lb range, but definitely under 10. Looking forward to getting out there again soon.
Thank you! I admit the timing was pretty nice. I'll tell you, I could talk to Joe for hours about fishing. The dude is a wealth of information and experience.
Dan deserves all the credit for this emerging fishery in New Jersey. He mastered it and shared his knowledge which opened a whole new world to anglers all over the region. Hat's off to Dan! Good luck this weekend. Tight lines!
I didn't expect multiples at that size for sure. The fishing has been a grind all season but I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.
