In Mexico I spent some time learning the Yucatec Maya language, which is indigenous to the Yucatán Peninsula and has been spoken in this area for thousands of years by the Mayan people. Even though lots of people still speak it, the younger generation is forgetting it and it was really interesting to go around and try and speak what I could speak. If you are interested in learning to speak the amazing Mayan language and help preserve Mayan culture, or just if you want to learn Spanish online or in-person with good local organizations, you can check out the schools I learned with here:

I highly recommend both of them!

I think it has more to do with the level. His Spanish is very very good for the little amount of time he has practiced. But it is nowhere near fluent. Also, a lot of Hispanics are white, so it’s not surprising to see a white person speaking Spanish. Whereas almost no Chinese people are white and he speaks fluent Chinese.

hey I'm from Yucatan and from my perspective....I think the reason the people aren't enthusiastic to speak is because (myself included) it is very rare for people to speak Maya now in Yucatan, we know a few words here and there but not enough to carry a full conversation... unfortunately it is becoming a forgotten language. This video definitely motivates me to learn more because I don't want it to be forgotten.

I know someone who is quite fluent in Latin. She wrote a Limerick in Latin (when she was like 17) that rhymes and makes sense. "Puella in turri vivebat ad quam quidam princeps vadebat. 'Demitte capillum!' Sed venit ad nillum quod crinem breviorem habebat." (I hope I spelled everything right, my Latin is very rusty.) Basically it translates to: a girl lived in a tower, and one day a prince arrived. "Let down your hair!" But it didn't lead to anything because her hair was too short.

This video and the language he uses to describe Yucatec Maya, ie "ancient" and "forgotten", are disrespectful and harmful. He is appalling unacknowledging of the fact that while he receives praise for learning this language, the community to which it belongs is being discouraged for doing the same thing. These are good reasons to criticize him, especially if, like me, you are a fan of his other videos. I encourage everyone to put pressure on X to do better. Do they speak Yucatec in Guatemala though? Mayan is more like a language family and in Guatemala they speak multiple different Mayan languages, so I think he'd have to learn something like K'iche or Kaqchikel :P

Hey Xiaomanyc! As a huge fan from Mexico City, thank you for coming to our country! I don’t know if you’re still here, but you should come to Mexico City in the future. 7-8 languages, Xiaoma has learned Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese, Fuzhounese), Spanish, Wolof, Bahasa Indonesian and now Yucatec Maya. He also learned Korean, Hindi, and Italian. Each in 12-24 hours in their respected videos, although it has been a long time since the Korean video so he maybe have forgotten Korean. I’m not sure of his fluency in each of them.

His fluency level is pretty low on those 1 day videos. I mean, he learns a lot fast, but then... what? No more videos. I will say his Spanish has improved markedly since he went to Mexico.

Your Spanish is pretty good :) one thing I would work on is not repeating words and working on the stuttering. It would just come off to us as an overly anxious person or other things.. lol Mannerisms are a huge part of speaking the language as well. Like when I learned French I found out it’s very laid back and it was common to pause with uuuh or eem in sentences like you’re thinking about the word. Be confident because you are doing great 👍🏻
