American Shocks Jungle Village by Speaking Ancient Mayan Language

I've been living in Mexico recently where I've learned to speak the Yucatec Maya language, the indigenous language of the Yucatan peninsula which has been spoken in this region for thousands of years. In this video I wander around the jungle villages of Tulum and surrounding areas and try to speak to people in Maya. I'm not perfect in Maya but fortunately I can also speak some Spanish, and so we speak in a mixture of Spanish and Maya. Come back next week to see me order a whole bunch of food in Maya!
This is the platform that I used to become fluent in Spanish in 20 days:

To say “lesser” is to continue the stereotype whereas these guys are bridging the gap by respecting and learning their language. @@sniff......................... Lesser culture? The Maya are a Mesoamerican people. Just an FYI, Mesoamerica is a Cradle of Civilization and considered a Pristine Culture by Archeologists and Anthropologists. In learning other tongues you begin to pick up mannerisms that hint at what somebody means and you can also breakdown the basic everyday chatting topics. So 100% understanding isn’t needed to get the gist of what they’re saying, but merely following the flow and adding in your knowledge becomes to work wonders.

If learning a vocal language is like learning a programming language, the more you learn the easier it is to pick up new ones. Eventually you get to the point that you could even predict what the programming language syntax is without ever seeing it before. It just works somehow.

By the way, the Yucatec Maya word for blue is CHOOJ (rhymes somewhat with chalk), but 90% of the people say ÁZUL, with the accent (about half the time) on the 1st syllable of the Spanish word AZÚL (accent on last syllable). The Mayas have borrowed many, many Spanish words and often then apply their own sound system of pronunciation to these borrowed words. We of course to the same in English. The word Llama, which is Spanish sounds like Yama is usually (mis-)pronounced with an L sound by us English speakers. There is no judgement here as to "right or wrong," it is just a matter of people assimilating things into their own language.
@zimriel
@zimriel 9 месяцев назад
Colour is the sort of thing that does get borrowed a lot, because besides some basic concepts (white, black, 'dark', red, 'green-yellow') most cultures just let the artists deal with the technicalities. All the Greeks could paint walls in a variety of colours but what did Homer sing about - "red", "wine dark sea", and not much else. Even Gladstone had to notice that Homer's vocabulary for colour was terrible. Probably why the Greeks themselves suspected that Homer was blind. I mean, even the post-Roman West dropped the old Latin word for "white" and picked up the German word "blank" / "blanco" / "blanche".

Amazing, as a french doctor living in this peninsula, i had to learn mayan in order to attend many mayan speaking patients and in order to treat them, such an amazing and difficult language to learn. My teacher is quite famous, he was hired by mel gibson to coach the language to the actors, his name is Hilario Chi Canul, amazing person trying to reinstate the language in the state by writing many books.

Even if it was, you would still have to demonstrate how a Chinese Dialect----which only evolved tone in Middle Chinese, long after the ancestors of the maya crossed into the americas----had enough influence to give tone to a Siberian Language.
