Grip position

I’ve seen a lot of different (bad) grips coaching, here are three common faults, and one correct grip.
3 things to notice on the correct grip:
- racket face is open
- index finger is separate from other 3 but wrapped around the grip
- racket is resting in the fingers not the palm of the hand
You may have seen pros with slightly varied grips on the model I’ve shown or even changing/adapting grips mid rally; I will address these topics at a later stage. For now, this is a great starting point for any junior or club level adult.

grip #3 is a great option to retrieve the ball from the backhand back corner though

The info offered in this short video helped me a great deal. I took two snap pictures of the correct position and the key is to have the strings pointing upward. When I went on court I did the same pointing strings upward on my backhand. I was hitting better on both sides. Many talk about shaking hands with the racquet handle. I will now add that you do so after you have pointed the strings upward, as in this demonstration.

u change your grip for every shot u play, that's how its done, so spinning the racquet in between shots can be useful :D

Totally agree. No 2 shots come back to u the same so at the very leasylt micro adjustments in grip must be made. And due to our physiology forehand and backhand require vastly different swings and often racquet face prep too.

I preferred to throw the racket and catch it so I can have the most instinctive grip for each shot. That way, my opponent is always guessing

I played squash for 10 years and then a new coach said you have to change your grip. He is Simon Taylor from the UK and a great guy. I told him it was uncomfortable and awkward but I finally "got it" and never looked back. The wrong grip is the number 1 impediment to all new (and existing low level) players. The other thing I'd like to add to this video is the notion of the cocked-wrist on the backhand. PS: If you have a closed grip, you can't hit a ball that is past you, you can only boast, you cannot do cross court or down the line and you can't lob! I wish there more videos like this. I may make one myself some day.

@@Crackers8 Not yet! However, this is the famous Mike Way version (focuses on backhand vs. forehand but still the bible on the topic): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A4cJjeNFG4Y.html

So important to have the correct grip. The leading edge of the racquet into the V of your thumb and index finger. A little uncomfortable at first but it'll improve everything about your game.

so we have to hold it like a badminton racket but without the index finger up

Hammany uses the second grip technique with her index very straight.

She's not the only one! Orfi does the same for example. I think index straight versus slightly bent is irrelevant as long as there is separation from index and rest of fingers

what about backhand?

You didn’t say how to find the correct grip

I think more like bevel grip on badminton racket. If you notice the racket angle, only difference was the tilt.

Line up the v between your thumb and first finger with the leading edge of the racquet and this automatically opens the face. A bit like shaking hands with it

Does that mean there's actually a forehand and backhand grip in squash?

@@khmak9387 no it's same grip for all shots

@@gaspardieu558 So forehand grip is angled up, and backhand angled down? In tennis, we switch grips to make them roughly symmetrical.

I don't see the difference between the correct grip and the closed one or something 💀

What is the difference between 3 and 4 th. Looks the same. Is it how much you turn the racquet?
@fraud8256
@fraud8256 11 месяцев назад
Basically it’s the tilt of the racket. The actual grip is the same, but in the 4th the strings are open and pointing up to the ceiling, whereas in third they are pointing down to the floor
@terryjonson8060
@terryjonson8060 9 месяцев назад
Lock your wrist and then the racqet face should be open and leaning slightly backwards. This will allow you to strike the ball flat and under the ball and not on top.
@addereal
@addereal 4 месяца назад
I believe if u have a lot of power and technique the 3rd one is useful on the forehand side to hammer balls crosscourt especially in the event where the ball has slightly passed ur body. That grip mandates powerful wristwork. If u can't hammer drives purely using wrist then don't use grip no.3
