I really really like the Gripen E, it's a very capable multirole fighter and it's absolutely a great aircraft. Greetings to Brazil, because they have already received their first units of this wonderful plataform. Congrats to you too Saab, thank you for the great job you've done here. Hope in a near future Mexico buy units of the Gripen E to replace the F-5 Tiger II that the Mexican Air Foce has now:D
One of the strengths of the Gripen is the big color display that's in the cockpit, similar to the F35. Meanwhile, other countries are using analog gauges with maps taped on the pilots thigh, sometimes a smartphone or commercial GPS on a phone mount ☠
Digital display is still very problematic compared to analogue gauges. Countless pilots have given their input regarding this topic, and a majority of them have issues with it.
Not really. Alot of countries have massive discussions with their voterbase on big public spending decisions. LHM and Saab realized this, which is why they release these ads lol. Media plays a massive role in policy.
i just love Swedish jets. i also like swedish stuff in general and there countries. i still find it cool that they are one of the few places that still makes their own aircrafts that work super good
yep, made right here in Brazil on Embraer. There's been "talks" already, but nothing concrete so far. Same with Colombia. The govt tried with Argentina too but the deal didnt went through, they're going with J17 or used f-16 aparently
One thing that was off, they didn't say a thing about the EWS. Gripen E is not 100% stealth, but with EWS, radars can't find them. Until it's too late.
This video, and the Saab philosophy behind it, so beautifully mirror and reinforce the difference in military strategies between 'Western Armed Forces' - including, today, Ukraine's - and those of other countries such as Russia and China. Western military personnel are given the information and power to make independent decisions to achieve their mission goals - whether that was paper maps in WWII, or HMC systems in 2023. Thank you Saab, thank you Sweden, for being among the leaders of the West!
@@Oscar-ds2vb Really? Then how would you categorize Sweden? It's not Soviet or Russian, it's hardly Middle Eastern, or East Asian, or South Asian, let alone African. Sweden has a free market, a ferociously capitalist economy, and a very strong personal freedom streak - almost libertarian in their emphasis on freedom. (Remember, this is the country that had NO speed limits on its paved highways until the late 1960s, and whose constitution forbade mask mandates as an infringement on personal freedom.) Its state church is Lutheran Protestant - though a majority of Swedes are said to be atheist. Sweden does have a strong and comprehensive social safety net - but one that discourages unemployment and basically forces able-bodied adults back into the workforce - and other Western countries have that sort of social safety net too. Swedes have voted, democratically, for years to improve and strength their social safety net. Sweden is in the EU, and has applied to join NATO. It has a free market, capitalist economy. Its religious background is Protestant. All these things put it firmly in the West.
@@eatonjask Have you any experience living in Sweden by any chance? I understand what you are trying to say but Sweden is not part of "the west". the west is historically the 'anglosphere'.
@@Oscar-ds2vb The West is the 'anglosphere'???? So France is not a Western country? Spain is not a Western country? Ancient Greece was seen as the start of 'the west' - did it speak English? The Western World is traditionally all the countries who have gone through the Renaissance, plus those with Protestant backgrounds, and those former colonies who achieved industrialisation. Have I lived in Sweden? No, but I do listen to what Swedes have to say on this topic. Just what larger grouping would you put Sweden in?
@@Kawaii-nc6eo tempest has a very long way to go yet and it's in the early stages but this system of data sharing has been talked about for many years. The concept is the same but I think it's still being developed for the UK and potentially to work across NATO
We know delta winged fighters are more maneuverable, but in this day and age, radar/sensor suite and its communication range with allied aircraft is king. It’s armament capabilities too.
Back in 1988 in Star Trek TNG there was an episode called "Arsenal of Freedom". The crew stumbles upon a holographic salesperson selling an advanced weapons system. And now I stumble upon this video on RU-vid. So weird to live in that future now.
Is it wierd? Because alot of countries have big discussions with their voterbase on big spending decisions. Canada for example is a big one. Trudeau at first didnt want the F35 and wanted the Superhornets at first. But eventually people realized the F35 was a genuinely good aircraft and the politics changed.
TBH, it sounds a little like what's currently used on the Viper's and Hornet's. Some of the additional sensor systems are definitely a Boon, same with the 3 hard points under the fuselage for mounting Meteors. Definitely sounds like the Gripen is growing into itself and starting to come online with other Western Aircraft. If the price per unit is still good, this could be a serious competitor against the Rafale and possibly the Viper. Information systems equivalent with U.S. aircraft, maneuverability comparable to a Rafale, Good payload and range, amenable pricing for purchase and per flight hour. On paper should be a potent package. For clarification, I actually do really like the Gripen. I think it does have promise. especially if it's continued to be improved on.
The big difference is that Gripen E is a very integrated and flexible avionics package with an aircraft around it. All other combat aircraft is the other way around, without the flexibility and GaN tech.
@@gryphonschnitzel7140 no! The don't have the flexibility to very fast adoptability of Gripen. Nor do they have GaN tech. I don't know any that are so aerodynamicaly efficient as Gripen or any that have so high availability. If they exist, I would be excited to know.
@@atlet1 maybe not exactly but then they are stronger in other domains such as payload and speed and dogfighting capability. The gripen is a very strong 4+ gen aircraft. But not the best, not even sensor wise.
most impressive thing about Gripen E, to me, is how small, practical, "low" maintenance, it is. possibly the best thing is its theory of operation. it is truly a well thought out philosophy of use distilled into a resilient piece of engineering. The female personification of the Gripen in this video however, has not actually convinced me of it's sensor fusion capabilities with her words. but she does have a convincing sleek battle-gray outfit. super nice comercial.
It is low, that's true, but nowhere close to what SAAB says... It is supposed to be around U$ 4.000 - 7.000. here in the brazilian air force, the operating costs by hour after 1 year from the arrival of the Gripen-E is around U$ 12.000, but the plane's combat systems have not even come close to being activated, also, the IRST is unequipped to lower costs. So, it's low cost compared to other 5/4++ gen planes, but far from the madness the Swedes talk about. although, what they say about the electronic suite is all true, FAB expects that it will take almost 10 years for all combat capabilities of the Gripen-E to be 100% operational (before that it is necessary to test, research, create doctrines that doesn't exists, train, etc.)
Here in Thailand, people in the Air Force told me that they really love the twelve Gripens that were bought (too bad we lost one due to pilot error). Such a marvellous machine with high performance and low operating cost. However after you join NATO, we'll probably not buy more. Our Air Force had enough bad experience with exuberant price of annual NATO software upgrades on F-16. By the way, you Swedes had a large, powerful and relatively peaceful neighbour (at least to you). It's your master across the Atlantic that turns both of you against each other. You voted for the politicians that submit your nation to the master. So, enjoy sovereignty while you can. Unless the Turks do you a favour.
Greetings from Sweden! I had the pleasure to visit the pagoda given by your country to commemorate your King's visit here, truly beautiful, so thank you :) We have warred with Russia on and off for the last 1000 years, so Sweden and Finland joining NATO now is because we know our neighbour. Sweden is large, but we probably have less people living in it than Bangkok alone. Since Kremlin is willing to murder their brothers in Kiev for no good reason, it is no longer safe to be a neighbour of an imperialistic and aggressive Russia. USA will be occupied with China soon, and will not have time to meddle with European politics, but they have never been the master here. Big country, so large influence, but never master. Your Gripens are already NATO-compliant, so no change there though you might want to get the new 39E version. If esnted, SAAB would most likely be happy to have Thailand set up a maintenance facility to do the upgrades needed yourself. Cheers!
It's far ahead of the super Hornet. FAR FAR ahead. It's ahead of the F35 or equal. The only thing it lacks is a "stealth" fuselage. But it's small so radar cross-section isn't very big and because of the superior radar and sensors and technology. It can detect and defeat enemy aircraft anyway.
@@loki76 No it isnt, hence why not many countries chose the Gripen over the F-35. It is an expensive jet, yet without stealth capablities expected of a 5th generation fighter.
@@motba6228 F35 have quite a larger budget.... and n.a.t.o (US) backing them up. Its not cheap thou..! Are you stupid. Its called the hangar-queen of a reason.
F-35 & Gripen's interface systems are our earliest steps to eventually obtain real-life interpretation of ENSI, or maybe ONSI from a fictional game, Ace Combat.
So inspiring. Love my 2004 9 3 Aero. Figure out a deal to give a couple of these beauties to Ukraine. Best advertisement you can ever do. Orders will pour in so hard you won’t be able to keep up ❤
Not a hater but the f35 still exists and the prices are dropping all the time becoming more affordable. It also has these sensors already. Also why do u still have a laser/thermal pod. Im not an engeener but inergrating it to the plane under the nose or the belly would free up pylons, reduce radar signature, and improve speed. Also something that isnt mentioned, is the gripen able to swap components like newer engine, radar, wiring and others or do u have to make a new model.
Let's buy these. Not because I believe in fighter jets, but because this is a triumph of technical marketing. I hate Top Gun movies and this gives me a much better fix. Sisu of the skies.
Mighty and not so peaceful neighbor :) I like the way small countries express themselves screaming about the treat of Russian invasion. It is like "Latvia" created a self-defence squad of 10 persons to fight against possible Russian aggression. Before the news appears in media nobody knew that fact that Latvia existed. Having such a "wunderwaffe" like Gripen E you don't need any NATO membership. Do you?))
While yes this is amazing and incredible. all i gotta say is, cyberwarfare could be quite a bit more powerful now. How is the network secured? how do they communicate? etc etc
Saab, you guys forgot something, what if the enemy is in a stealth jet, ur just gonna get radar locked and your gripens are gonna plum into the ground..
Wish that SAAB aquire the Trollhättan plant again. SAAB has the expertise in lightweight constructions a key for electric vehicles, aerodynamics just as important. Plus the HMI. Let us hope the management has come over the debacle 12 years ago.
@@espacesX Not entirely true... the first Saab cars were designed + built by aeronautic engineers. This was clear to see from how the engine was mounted in reverse (and hung at a 45 degree angle) to the interior resembling a cockpit. Before Saab, car radios were mounted in the center console instead of the dashboard. Think of how insane that is. But yes, later on a division was made between the airplane & automotive sectors.
This is the greatest SAAB advert i've seen. Looks like the swedish are starting to take their marketing seriously. They have very advanced products and high calibre engineering schools.
Nah man. I like Saab, but this advert feels like a load of hot air. If you want to impress me with a "new" technology like HMC, then least show how it might be original in any way. The graphics are way more impressive than the information presented. They keep talking about vague improvements the whole time, without substantiating any of it. The concepts they are talking about (HMI and HMC) are standard for every fighter created since 1980. You can't survive without it. They failed to explain how their HMC is different to any other existing HMI. How do pilots receive this discussed data? Headsets, HUD, screens? Standard procedure. How do pilots interact with the plane? Buttons, eye tracking systems, voice activation, joystick? Standard procedure. I call BS. What do you think?
@@jonathanfrancesconi6666 That's exactly what I got from the video too. I think this plane's pretty cool and as far as I know it should be a cheap reliable platform for launching NATO munitions but I hate how they keep insinuating that it has superior this and that, that it's somehow the best plane out there, etc. It's a pretty clever plane designed and built by a small country that doesn't have a huge military budget and its' mission is to counter older non-stealth Russian planes. I mean they come close to outright saying Russia at the beginning of the video. Sweden just doesn't have the money to come up with a next gen platform and while I could be wrong they don't really have the money to buy tons of US made F-35s either. Or maybe they don't want to do it for political reasons. I don't know, I don't exactly keep up with what Sweden does as a country. I know the USA doesn't sell F-22s, F-16s are really old and F-35s are extremely expensive and you have to wait forever for them. Hence this thing in the video. I'd bet my money on an F-35 any day of the week though. It'd probably just launch some missiles at the Griffen and get out of there before the Griffen pilot could even figure out what was happening. Then kaboom as they say hehehe.
@@davidcobra1735 I think you make some good points. No doubt that the Gripen E is a capable, robust and intelligent modern fighter jet - well suited to it's combat role. But I'm going to need more convincing before I call it a superior fighter plane - especially compared to 5th gen fighters like the F-35, J-20 and Su-57.
@@jonathanfrancesconi6666 Yep basically that. Russia has how many SU-57s? Half a wing? Maybe a full wing. Sweden's good for the next 5-10 years with these things. Other countries are buying a lot of Griffens too. Do you know if Sweden has F-35s and if yes how many? The information alludes me.
@@davidcobra1735 Yeah you're probably right. Tbh I have no clue what Russia is hiding in their arsenal, or Sweden, or China for that matter. It's usually not in their interest to be honest about those numbers to the public. If you do find out I'd also be interested.
@@donquixote1502 I thought of that as I was writing too, but I don't think so, after all, they take pride in that their plane is smaller than literally every other fighter jet yet have similar if not better capabilities, I see what you mean though, but I am only talking directly about little as in physical size which is not wrong and is part of the Gripen design principles.
Just imagine how Saabs car would have been if they didn’t go bankrupt, it would have been amazing when thinking about it! Especially when this is saab in 2023❤
Saab went bankrupt thanks to one greedy family in Sweden. That showed us the backside of Capitalism at its worst. The same family shamed themselves during WWII too. Their only loyalty is money, money, money.
One hell of an aircraft, that's for damn sure. The Saab vehicle I owned growing up was just a purely different animal than the American cars on the road at the time. The level of thought put into nearly every piece of engineering on the vehicle was apparent. I can only imagine how the Gripen must feel :)

Well done SAAB. You created a really good fighter jet a real "game changer". Me as a person who was putting togeather informations about diferent fighter jets, I can say that Gripen is one of the best or the best fighter jet in the world. Iam little bit sad that country where do I live (Slovakia) has chosen F 16 against Gripen even when the data showed that Gripen is beater. But maby I can see why. The slovack gouverment has everytime some level of coruption. Sorry when there are some gramar mistakes.
The F16 is cheap. Alot of countries use it just cus the spare parts are readily available and there is alot of support for that platform. The Gripen is better, but your gonna be dealing with the fact its gonna have to rebuild all those supply chains itself. Its like buying a 3D printer. You want one that you know have alot of support for, and that you can print out upgrades for yourself. You want one you can go online and find alot of third party stuff for aswell.
Your right but I can say that even for the F16 you need to do new supply lines to Slovakia because it was to this day using just soviet era eqipment. Because it is a post soviet country and you can still see it in everyday life. But your right for the F16 there is a lots of sper parts avaylable even in neer countryes for exumple Poland. So yes there is the other side of the thing. But Gripen is still the best. Sorry when there are some gramar mistakes.
@@honkhonk8009 Gripen C costs 40%less per flight hour than the F-16, but spare parts and being better is less of an issue than making closer connections with USA as having a big ally close gives more security than owning even as many as 30 F-22 with all spares and ammo ever needed.
@@johanmetreus1268 Yea basically what i was saying lol. Aviation isnt the same as driving your old camry. Its more like managing computer infrastructure almost. You gotta deal with all the other stuff associated with the aircraft.
I saw a very knowledgeable interview stating that Gripen would be the best fighter to send to Ukraine. It was designed to fight Russian in a highly contested environment without full air superiority. Meteor with its special rocket motor can operate at very low altitudes to evade air defences (better than any other western missiles). Gripen can take off from short road-based airfields (shorter than any other powerful/realistic western fighter, apart from the F-35B) and requires a smaller and more portable logistics train than any other western fighter. It is also not sensitive to debris (FOB) to the same degree as other aircraft. Also, not many would be needed to have a significant impact. Only a minimum of 20 would be needed to push back the Russian fighters from the frontline, and facilitate the Ukrainian counter-offensive. Maybe Turkey should let Sweden (and Finland) to join NATO so that we could get to delivering that capability to the Ukrainians!
It's so sad that you guys don't make nice cars anymore. I think with the knowledge you have about airplanes, the vehicles would be very special again - just like your airplanes.
Remember folks, the same tech in the Gripen E is also being placed into the F-35, including the Datalink tech from what I've been able to read and hear, which means they could probably link up with F-35s during collaborative missions and training sessions.
@@plh8707 I wouldn't be so sure, the F35 is really good, but random people seem to overhype it way too much on the internet. It is good, but niche, it has a lot of problems like it's bad top speed and range, sacrificed for VTOL, which could make it falter against several other fighters if done right. We are probably not seeing them go head-to-head since we're all allies anyway, pointless comment.
