Gripen is tailormade for short take off and landings. Here, a Gripen C from the Swedish Air Force using an 800 m long and 16 m wide public road as an airstrip during exercise Aurora 17. www.gripen.com
That’s why Saab made cars, the plane disassembles, then an IKEA conscript packs it into a big box that is loaded in to a car (usually on the roof, about the size of a large IKEA bed), and the entire trunk is filled with Carl Gustafs and meatball rations
@@angela1984a Gripen can land on way rougher and smaller roads than shown here, basically any two lane tarmac road and has a landing and take off distance of 500m respectively 400m. Let me tell you there are tens of thousands of such locations in Sweden.
I'd love to hear a good heavy swedish band in the background (come on, these are mean machines!) such as: Arch Enemy or In Flames Not something weak/hillsongs sounding.
I doubt most people understand why it’s such an asset to have a jet that can land/take off from a road without worrying about FOD or a rough surface and be easily rearmed by as few as 1-2 personnel w/minimal training.
Thrust reverser is just on wet run ways, where breaks arn't as good. TR is only used on dry runways to help take load off breaks, so their not as hot, allowing for a faster turnaround time. With a plane like the Gripen, the turn around time is high enough to allow the breaks to cool in time to fly another sortie. This means they generaly don't need TR
Sure, but the Thrust reverser in the viggen ways about 2000 pounds, and since the gripen can point its canards down and thus increase the force on the nose-wheel, and thus increase the effectiveness of the breaks, it was decided that those 2000 pounds could be spent else where :) The official landing distance for gripen and viggen are the same at 500 meter :)
Then it's start and landing in peace. In a state of war, jackets can start with full weight 300 meters and land at 250 meters. Then there are secret numbers on landing and start as just the Air Force and SAAB know about
by the way dprk air force practicing same tactics , using the miserable bolsheviks obsolete mig 21 and mig 23 , su 25 planes , So over time the value of many operational advantages of the JAS-39 will be very much questionable .
What is great in it ? Mig29 since 1980s is designed to take off and land on rough roads. Check air intakes above wings of mig29 . Gripen is average multiple fighter jet made for Sweden who had limited money to operate a small airforce
@RU-vid Sucks you know nothing about current versions of mig29 I.e. mig29kovt and mig35ovt . Both can track f35 atleast 100kms away without switching on their radar. Mig29kovt and mig35ovt can jam and outmaneuver all wvr and bvr missiles fired at them. Mig29 has str equivalent to f22 and has one of highest thrust to weight ratio. If You are talking about electronics and softwares don't forget Iranians had hacked controlled and landed most advanced stealthy drone spying in Iranian air space.
