Birmingham, England, GREAT BRITAIN - 1995 World Figure Skating Championships, Ice Dancing, Original Dance ("Quickstep") - Oksana Grishuk and Evgeny Platov of Russia
Scott Moir, Guillaume Cizeron
I can't appreciate the control they have over their edges enough. They're simply very good at skating which is what figure skating is all about. They move so freely over the ice and make everything look so easy and natural. Great dancers as well with sharp timing, stiff upper body, big strides, flexibility and staying close together.

I love how this dance demonstrates how they could handle incredible content while skating in waltz and foxtrot holds (and their handholds are very soft and fluid). Yet my favourite part was their long right back outside edge at 1:53. What amazing control.
This dance was also very artistic, which not all their original dances were. Their 94 was lacking in artistry in the sense it wasn't that appropriate or suitable for a rhumba with lack of subtlety. But this had perfect expression and musicality and performance, with all the character of a quickstep, combined with the incredible content, dance holds suited to this dance, smoothly performed.
@@gk891 Tracy's commentary on Gritschuk & Platov really bothered me at the time, and it bothers me even more today. Someone like Barb Underhill may have had her biases, and a lot of her commentary was head scratching and bizarre all around, but she was never so overcome by them she couldn't give someone their due atleast some of the time or when it was super obvious. Tracy could never drop her grudge and insistence on making them look back to the TV audience.
1995 was IMHO the best year for G&P. Both their OP and FD were masterpieces. They were so good at the classic ballroom style (even though they’re known for their more unusual FDs)
@@sorayabranco I think it's because he trained with Dubova for much longer than Grishuk did. Grishuk trained with Dubova from 1989 to 1992. If she had either started off with Dubova or trained with her for a few years longer before inner-politics within the Dubova camp pushed her and Platov out, her basics could've been polished up even more. What's funny is that her free leg positions were almost impeccable in the compulsories but they could sometimes be hideous in the free dance in certain moves (like lifts). She was a skater of extremes I guess.
And this dance is perhaps one of the greatest examples of how exceptional they are. They sometimes had some poor material but this OD was brilliantly choreographed and they performed it to perfection. Such close positions, soft and fluid handholds, and steps done with razor-sharp timing.
Oksana Grishuk is my favorite skater and I am proud, she is the best in the world. And I saw it more than once. Very emotional! the misuc, the skaters and the emotions went together beautifully. And the costume looks nice - remember the name of the music! I think it is the best dance after the great USSR ice skating stars!
