@@user-qv2ur2bw3z thanks for that man. His story is a lot like this song in a couple aspects, I think its why I've always loved this song. My dad and I both grew up in a small rural county. Back after he graduated (1966) he knew he'd get drafted soon enough so he decided to also volunteer (like the song character Steve played). He went on to 2 tours, made E5 and spent a large portion of his time in Vietnam in a Rivereen PBR unit. He came back home with both a bronze star and a purple heart, and didn't talk about any of his time there until I was 15 years old (mid 80's).

Another thing about those Appalachian Mountains you want to watch out for, and it's not weed fields.. It's Ginseng fields. Wild, or 'organically grown' Ginseng is worth more than Gold. I'm not joking. Google it. And it grows all over those mountains. So people who have Ginseng patches on their land can and will shoot you for harvesting their crops. I grew up in those mountains and people have gone 'missing' because they thought they'd cash in on some Ginseng. LOVED THE REACTION!!

@@chrislind57 I like Guitar Town too. And I think a comparison and discussion about the song "Galway Girl" would be fun and interesting too. Steve Earle wrote and performed it initially, but then it became famous over in Ireland and 2 Irish musicians named Mundy and Sharon Shannon did their version of the song. Their concert in the city of Galway, Ireland singing "Galway Girl" would be a fun comparison to Steve Earle's original version. Here are some links: (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SNs0vKDvs0g.html), (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mee5eb8eyJ4.html). I enjoy the Irish version better because they turned a folk song about a lost love into a celebration of the city, country, and people of Ireland, but congrats to Steve for creating the song in the first place!

From the 40s through the 70s three of my uncles on my mom's side made moonshine and two uncles on my dad's side made bootleg beer and wine. It made us kids laugh that they all railed about weed. Little did they know that the older kids planted seeds from Colombia and Mexico a couple of acres behind the stills. The local law enforcement knew all about the stills and even drank moonshine with my uncles. The weed was never discovered because no one bothered the stills and the cops saw no need to go near them.

Steve Earle is a songwriting legend. He’s still making great stuff too. Guitar Town and Copperhead Road were basically his peak of mainstream popularity, he was, for lack of a better word, a junkie. He had serious issues but eventually overcame it. His son, Justin Townes Earle was also an absolute KILLER of a singer/songwriter. Justin unfortunately inherited the vices of his father, struggled for most of his life often very publicly. He had a beautiful wife and a little girl and had been clean for years. He fell off the wagon in 2020 and got drugs that had fentanyl and sadly passed away. Justin was an incredible talent. His wife and daughter still benefit from the music so please check it out. Harlem River Blues and Lone Pine Hill are 2 great ones to start with.

Copperhead Road was a real place, and the song hints at its location when it mentions the "big block Dodge" had painted on its side, "Johnson County Sheriff." Johnson County is in Eastern Tennessee (Knoxville is the closest large city), and the county seat (probably the town where "granddaddy" came to "about once a year") is Mountain City. This song became so famous by the mid to late 80s that the Johnson County Board of Commissioners changed the name to "Copperhead Hollow Road," because people kept stealing the road signs. 😆 I grew up in Corbin, Kentucky, not too far north of that part of Tennessee, and no, there were narrow Appalachian roads that nobody *ever* took, except the people who lived in the hollers at the end of them. I also had a distant cousin who came by my Mamaw's house once, while I was there. He had a monstously huge late '50s Buick, painted with matte black primer. You could feel in your guts the rumble from that V8 under the hood, and even as a little kid I knew, immediately, how Cousin Ott made his money.

There really is/was a Copperhead Road. They finally had to change the name because people kept stealing the road signs. He was a friend of Townes Van Zant and did and does a lot more folky sounding country. His band used to have a more driving sound. Some of his other great songs are Guitar Town, Week of Living Dangerously, The Devil's Right Hand. Steve didn't play mandolin prior to this. He taught himself because he imagined the mando and the bag pipes as a big part of this tune. I am leaving a link to a live performance of guitar town. YT suggestions will probably show you more songs from the same concert. Enjoy! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JvyJb-VaDas.html

The whole Copperhead Road album is a belter - and includes a fantastic recording with The Pogues and Shane MacGowan on "Johnny Come Lately". I think Steve Earle once said that this song was almost a sequel to Robert Mitchum's "Thunder Road"

I grew up in north Appalachia. In the early nineties I worked in West Virginia. I remember driving up in hollers where you instantly knew you did not belong and best thing was to get out of there as quickly as possible and hopefully not attract any attention. This stuff in this song is absolutely real.

Good song and good comparison between two products outlawed by the government yet supported by the producers and some consumers. "I learnt a thing or two from Charlie, don't you know/You better stay away from Copperhead Road."

Steve Earle also acts. The one part I'm most familiar with is a recurring role on The Wire, Waylon. A recovering addict and drug counselor. I remember watching first time thinking, "Hmmm, who *is* that??" Then I saw his name in the credits and figured it out. Side note: If y'all have never seen The Wire (HBO), you would probably love it. Still holds up 20 years on.

I grew up in in Appalachia and this song could be talking about my dad's family that were moonshiners since way back in the late 1800's in West Virginia. I was tasting since I was about four..... now I'm 63 and still tasting.

Fun fact for the line dance... After the line about joining the army on his birthday, we would all throw up middle fingers and yell "fuck the army" twice. Being in El Paso TX, home to Ft Bliss, most of the crowd myself included were active army or veterans. I think it was kind of a protest about Vietnam and how much service members get screwed by the army.

All record companies in Nashville have Session Writers to help artists write songs. That's where Steve Earle got started. Also Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings most notable.

I love Steve Earle but every time one of his songs come up I'm reminded of this one time years ago I read a quote from some interview where he said that in his opinion the best American songwriter in history was Townes Van Zandt and he was willing to stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table and tell him that to his face, and then they asked Townes Van Zandt what he thought about that and he said something to the effect of "I know Bob and I can tell you that his bodyguards wouldn't let Steve get anywhere near his coffee table."
