While I was running in Eastern British Columbia I came across a most affable of creature. This creature was in fact so social that it came over to greet me. I was not very impressed with its assertive display at hello and left quickly.
You'd be surprised on how often your in proximity to a bear when you live in bear country. They can smell for miles. They know where humans are. They just rarely bother us.
If you're running in the woods of British Columbia, you're bound to run upon one of the 15 000 grizzlys that live there one time or another. And you're probably either gonna surprise them, or trigger a predatory response because you're running - neither of which is great for surviving. Hiking is one thing, but running, alone, with seemingly no bear spray or anything at hand? Hard pass from me!
When in the outdoors, you will have no idea most of the animals, including bears are there. Most of the time bears too will flee if they become aware of your presence. They typically want nothing to do with humans.
He did exactly what you don't need to do: 1- Being alone in bear territory 2- Running 3- Run again after seeing a bear 4- Not having something to defend yourself, not even bear spray The guy is really lucky the bear was as surprised as him and got scared as well lol
@@haitamc5611 um No. Incredibly untrue. There are literally millions of encounters with bears each year worldwide, and most sightings of a bear are of its rear end bc it's running away from you. There is on average about one fatal attack annually. You are far, far likelier to be killed by a snake or dog, if we aren't counting the most dangerous animals- human.
@@darkcrystalmagik3369 You're far more likely to be killed by a snake or a dog because more people live near them. Bears are miles more dangerous than both of those
Mega Zeta So in other words you’ve been wrong on this all along, you admit that you don’t know what you’re talking about, you’re not the brightest bulb in the room.
Bears generally aren’t predators. That’s why they eat people alive unlike cats which kill their prey first. A bear can definitely run faster than him but it’s not like he should stop running and let the bear know he shouldn’t be eaten. He’d probably have to be pretty hungry to chase the runner when it’s already moving away and that bear was already munching on some shrubs. He’s def lucky tho you don’t wanna get caught by bear
Lmao, it's normal to be impressed by large animals ! Especially when they are in herds, I mean, even if cows aren't known to be violent animals, since we can't read their minds and that they could at any time feel threatened during an unusual encounter with a human, I suppose if one decides to charge at you they could pretty easily kill you...
@@johnthorley8162 Lmao right, that was what I was trying to say, they're not very violent usually, but they can become it if they feel threatened, I mean, I've been in fields around cows quite a few times in my life and nothing ever happened except one or twice, they get agitated for no "apparent" reason and it can become dangerous judging by their size and the fact that they will move as a herd of they panic !
watching this whole video without reading comments or skipping ahead is so suspenseful haha. every stump and pile of leaves looks like a bear when you're waiting for one to pop out somewhere
Ditto! I actually jumped when it popped out.... What a dick the runner was,... I would've at least called out "BEAR" for the people on the path walking up behind to warn them. I guess they got eaten

+Kevin F Shitting yourself and covering all your body as much as you can with shit might NOT be a bad idea if a bear is trying to eat you alive you know... But you probably wouldn't have time for that. You might as well just put a little bit of shit on the bear's nose and hope for a miracle...
He’s obviously on a bike... can’t you hear the chain switching sprockets every time he changes gears? Lol just kidding.... you can clearly hear his foot steps haha.. I don’t even ride bikes or run LOL...
+Shaun SW You should never run if you encounter a bear. That`s extremely dangerous. You were lucky to get out of this situation alive. If you run in a area were there are bears you should carry pepper spray for protection, and make a lot of noise so that you scare away potential bears. You probably panicked in this situation, and i`m sure i would have done the same thing if a bear came sneaking up on me like this one did to you, but try to make noise when you run in areas where there`s bears. This bear just wanted to chase you away, she didn`t want to kill you, but by running you could have triggered her hunting instinct.
Trust me, in a situation like this, even the most unhealthiest person will kick in to high gear with adrenaline and run for miles if it's to save your own life.
Do your self a favor....purchase a firearm.... Btw. You were fast before the bear.....i was real impressed after you saw it though. I gotta start jogging
FrekeOne Carry bear spray and keep iPod out of your ears (you can still hear the music and surroundings). Cough around blind corners or blow a whistle. My iPod makes me comfortable enough that the bear will hear me. If the wind is in your face, they will not smell you coming. Your course of action if confronted by a brown vs. black bear are different if you are attacked; otherwise calmly talk to the bear while backing away and have your bear spray in hand. Grizz Mom w/cubs will certainly attack if you're in close range. Play dead, cover your neck and lift your knees to your chest. Black bear Mom w/cubs will almost always retreat. If a black bear attacks, you must fight. Playing dead does not work w/a black bear.
@@mweb1 no, the bear was probably just crossing the path. Trust me, if it was hunting that guy would be dead within 5 seconds at the start of the chase.
Bear had probably been getting pushed around the area all day. That bear would have been all over this dude if he wanted to. Pretty sure he was just trying to get away from people an accidentally ran into 1. Should definitely have some sorta weapon tho if your out in that kinda country. Never know when your gonna run into one with a bad attitude. Prolly never happen but rather be save than sorry.
at least one hiker had bear bells near the beginning. I tried for about 1/10th of a mile and the bells went in the pack- in a sock to keep them quiet. I'll take the risk.
that's the thing about running in bear country, you smell enough that they can smell you a mile away and when you do encounter one your too worn out to run fast anymore.
@@maycohen7536 by running, you can instinctively trigger a predator into pursuing you. The vast majority of times, a bear will simply wander by, or run away (more frequently) if it doesn't view you as prey. Running makes you look like prey.
UncleStu's Outdoor World i agree with u but i also dont blame the guy that also wouldve activated my fight or flight lol😂 i had a similar experience when i visited california and i also ran now that i look back at it it was a stupid idea. Luckily the bear didnt look twice.
They were eaten alive. Did you know that a Grizzly bear will not kill you before it eats you? It's so strong it doesn't feel the need to kill you first it just pins you down and starts biting at your "soft" spots like the buttocks, back of the legs or belly.
@@noirartist oh right... would think of mountain lions as wildcats, more than actual (safari) lions. Still wouldn't fancy a close up encounter though...
Heres a few tips. Dont run, if he wants to eat you climb a tree. Bears dont realy attack humans, if they would it would probably be because it was hunting you or it was scared by you and wanted to defend itself
Daniel Eikefjord if you climb a tree he can climb it too, plus you don't have nowhere to run. Best thing is try to use trees and rocks around you to obstacle him and even better drop your backpack, bottle, gloves, helmet or anything you have on you, there's a good chance he will stop to check if it's something he can eat.
Don’t understand why people think that it’s okay to just go for a casual stroll where killing machines live??? They would happily maul you to death! 🐻 💀
I hike on the park trails in Virginia and people look at me like I'm crazy when I exit the woods with backpack on bear spray strapped on and air horn, not to mention my concealed carry. I have lived close to the woods for many years and have seen black bear, mountain lion and coyote. I see people all the time hiking the trails like their on a stroll through the mall with no situational awareness.
You should always take someone less athletic than you while in the woods. As my favourite author once said, "You don't have to run faster than the bear to get away. You just have to run faster than the guy next to you".-Jim Butcher (creator of The Hairy Dresden Files)
The "Black bear" actually comes in many different colors and its a common misconception. Black bears can be white, brown, cinnamon, black and white, etc. I hunt and live in Idaho, I run into black bears here all the time. Prettiest one I've seen was black with a white diamond on her chest, she had one brown cub and one black cub.
Marko Jakus Haha, so confident! Nice passive-aggressive little 'buddy' you threw in there, you must know what you're talking about. Oh wait, the uploader explicitly states he was running and not biking, as if the stepping motion of the video and hands swinging into view weren't obvious enough.
Dr. Matt Pure luck and good ranger work. Bear has been scared by shots in the end... otherwise... And anyway... in this case it happened so fast that the guy didn't have any chance really...
No, not my ass. The only reason he didn't get his shit mauled was because the bear heard him coming and wasn't startled. Also it probably had heard and seen many other humans already. If he happens to come around a corner with thick trees or a rock and startled the bear, he would probably have been attacked.
People seem to think predators will attack you regardless if they see you.. Usually they will only attack if startled or hungry, but of course there are many other reasons and it's up to you to risk it. But killing prey is difficult so most animals will only do it when necessary so keep calm, keep your distanse and don't draw attention. (I know this is very easy to write from a toilet seat) but more times than not follow those steps and you will be fine
You are, of course, being facetious. Running triggers the predatory instinct to chase what runs. Thankfully it didn't happen this time. Chances are this bear sees lots of people on this busy trail.
Bill Steinbach III no I wouldn’t. I grew up hiking in grizzly country and know that turning your back to a predator while in its line of sight is the worst thing you can do. Triggers the killing instinct as it proves you are prey. There was a group of college students hiking in New Jersey in 2014 and they ran into a black bear. Black bears are very rare there, and they are more timid. This bear was curious, and the students filmed it walking towards them. The group could have easily scared it off as it came to investigate them by yelling at it and working together. Instead all these kids turned and ran and the curious bear chased them. It caught the slowest and fattest one and ate him alive. RIP Darsh Patel. Sorry you had such shitty friends. His death was so needless because if the group had just shouted and backed away slowly all would have survived.
@@therookie8895 Actually bear spray works on mama bears with cubs too. Bear spray works better than guns on average. Video evidence: ftw.usatoday.com/2018/05/expert-halts-grizzly-bear-charge-with-bear-spray-video-could-help-save-lives
pretty sure that bear could've caught you if he really wanted to... I think you lucked out big-time. Big macs and 27 hours of couch and TV time don't seem so bad now do they?
Yeah, it could have caught him for sure. He seems like an in good shape quick runner (the dude), but bears are faster than people. On a bike, I think any good cyclist could escape a bear but even then there are no guarantees. Personally, I can sprint on my mountain bike up to 60kph, for about 5-10 minutes.
Not on that terrain. We have advantage on uneven/mountain terrain and that one was full of up an downs, water, rocks, etc. There are even marathons where people run in the mountains versus horses an they win. Ofc, on straight terrain a horse destroys us.
He did the one thing we were warned not to do during a bear encounter - ran like your favorite sushi plate you almost missed on the conveyer belt in front of you.
Bear was like..."What, you see a fucking sasquatch behind me or something?!" I would hope that, judgeing by how busy that trail is, he is accustomed to humans and was trying to avoid them. That torn to shreds dead tree trunk looked fairly recent and was a harbinger of bear. Not long before the sighting. Still would be scared shitless, it was big.
Actually I think that a bear said "Holy Shit". If the bear was after you, there's no chance at all to escape. Outrunning grizzly ... that's SOMETHING! :)
That's exactly what I would have said - "Holy Shit" and would have left a brown trail behind. I'm sure you were not planning to do intervals that day! Beautiful place!
A black bear ran into me while I was gathering fire wood when I was 12. I just raised my arms, roared and slowly advanced towards it to show I wasn't scared and it ran away. Black bears aren't as threatening though black bears can look like brown bears and vice versa.
