Jim Schroeder shows us the numerous improvements he's made to his G0602 lathe, including DRO scales, tailstock camlock, integrated spindle index, reverse idler, and many more. This is an excerpt from a longer Shop Tour video with Jim Schroeder. You can view the full shop tour here: • Jim Schroeder's Amateu... or you can visit ProjectsInMetal.com for more videos, free plans, and other information for the amateur machinist.

I was thinking about changing out the gutless AC motor on my old lathe with a 2HP DC motor I salvaged off a treadmill also. After seeing it in action it is on my to do list for sure now. Great mods on your lathe all the way around!

There is a lot of info on the G0602 on the ProjectsInMetal(dot)com forum. I don't have the specifics myself, but perhaps Jim will see your comment and reply. On his G0602 he used a DC motor, but he said would use a VFD if he had it to do over. Several people have talked about their VFD conversions on the forum.

Nice job. I have the same lathe and it rattles like crazy. I need to take it apart and redo the gibs etc.

Hi I would like to know since this lathe does not have auto cross feed...are you happy with it being this way or do you miss the auto cross power feed??? I have the itch to buy a 11x26 hopefully I dont miss the ten inches from 12x36 I am used to but that cross power feed keeps stopping me. I think the price is pretty good but cannot make up my mind. Can you please let me know what you think. Thanks Manny

Hi Jim! In it's original condition were you able to do threading was the torque ok ? Stay healthy my friend.

love your lathe i really want power crossfeed g9972z i think is the smallest griz offers
@johncmitchell4941

My G9972z doesn't have power cross-feed but my G4003 does have it, as well as reverse-feed for threading left-hand. Not always a good idea to reverse and cut heavy with screw-on chucks of the smaller machines. Some chuck bores on these are smaller than spindle bore. For example, the 3-jaw on my G9972Z had to be opened up with a boring bar to get closer to spindle bore size. I'm using treadmill motors to re-power some tools. Adding a jackshaft, a HFT metal blade, and DC motor to my 14" 'wood-cutting' bandsaw was a cheap conversion for cutting metal too. Speed control is via HFT router speed controller and a 50a-200PIV diode bridge rectifier to convert AC to DC. Cinci #2 T&C grinder sports similar motor conversion (vs OEM 440v 3-Ph), and I just plug in the one speed control to run each DC machine in turn. Motor torque is reduced even with the speed control's PWM method, but slight variations below WFO are often enough to just reduce chatter. G9972Z is next to be converted to variable. :-) btw, G0619 has 3-PH spindle motor and incorporated VFD. When is sits for a long spell, it's important to run for a while at low speed with no load to reform capacitors within the variable drive's electronics. I run a short version of 'break-in' procedure to do that.

I'm missing the part of the reverse idler gear. Is that big lower gear movable? It is in different spots in the video. I do not own one of these yet, so excuse my question if it dumb.

The large gear on the bare metal swing arm with the curved slot and lock stud is the reversing gear. The larger gear on the bottom left is mounted on a slotted swingarm for adjustment. The bottom right large gear is the changebox input shaft gear which is changeable for size but not position adjustable.

Good Idea to convert your lathe to variable speed motor. You state that you bought the DC 2 HP variable speed at Home Depot,but when I went to this store in Columbus,Ohio I was told that they did not sell electric motors.Did you purchase your motor online? Where did you buy the speed control switch dial?Should the motor fit without any modification?

He bought the paint there said the motor was from a treadmill. Not sure what you heard..

I myself don't think reverse tumbler is "rarely used" For 1 thing: handy for threading AWAY from the Chuck 2. Boring from left to right, away from chuck. Both operations come in pretty handy.
@dwightcarlson7136
@dwightcarlson7136 2 года назад
As far as I know, you can thread away from the chuck by just running the chuck in reverse but you need to put the tool upside down on the far side of the chuck.

Hi Jim, I would like to know wich tools post you are using on your lathe a AXA or BXA. Thanks

BXA is generally for 12" and larger lathes

Can you tell me about the variable freq motor that was recommended. What size and what application is used on this motor?
