Grizzly Locker and 456 Gears on the Street - Is it Bear-able?

This time in the AutoEdits garage... we stuff a Yukon Grizzly Locker, stronger axles and 4.56 gears in the 1995 OBS Chevy Tahoe.
I don't do this install myself in the garage but take it to a local shop called Hooper's Rear End Exchange 818-899-2515 (support your local business!) The main reason for taking it to a shop was to get it done fast and with some confidence since I'm leaving on a trip tomorrow in the Tahoe!
Unfortunately this upgrade isn't cheap but it is a really good one. I could have saved a bunch by doing the install on my own but the tight schedule meant I had to take one for the team and hit the credit card for this one. For your reference, the labor cost was about $950.
I'll run you through the full parts list right here...
YG GM8.5-456 8.5" GM 4.56 R&P
YG GM8.25-456R 8.25IFS GM 4.56 REV
YGLGM8.5-3-30 8.5" & 8.6" GM 30spl
BK GM8.5-HD 8.5" GM REAR w/After
SK CSGM8.5 8.5"GM & 9.25"CHY SO
AK C10 C10 AERO TRUCK AXLE
YA G26010416 8.5" TRK AXLE, 4WD-3
You can get them from Summit Racing or email my guy Tate directly at Randy's Worldwide at brian.hudson@randysworldwide.com
Thanks so much for watching... leave any questions you have in the comments and don't forget to head over to the Amazon store to pick up a few things!

Awesome video. I love those kinds of shops. Gears are their specialty, it is what they do! I learned the hard way to NOT use an Offroad shop to do gear work. It’s much better in my opinion to take it to a place that just does only gears! I had a grizzly in the front and rear on my 1993 YJ and I absolutely loved them on the trail and they were fine on the street too. I loved not having to engage and disengage lockers on the trail.

When you take your Tahoe off road, lower your air pressure to get more grip. Also it will help from the fire getting punctured. Just a heads up
@Stuka87
@Stuka87 3 года назад
I don't think you drive in snow often (Maybe if you go to big bear or something?), but if you do, know that an automatic locker can cause snap oversteer. Sometimes there wont be enough traction just driving to cause it to lock (it needs differentiating forces to lock). But then one tire may spin more on a corner or uneven piece of road, and it will suddenly lock and cause the back end to kick out. You get used to it, and you have an automatic will make it less likely. But something to be aware of. You may also sometimes get the "bang" that happens after pulling out onto a road where the locking collars are between teeth, and then they will slip and lock. Which will cause a loud bang, and make the truck jerk to one side a bit. And since you have an automatic, you should not need to worry about "shift steer". Where you shift from typically 1st to second on a slight corner, the locker will cause the vehicle to go straight instead of the slight turn. But I have only ever had that happen with manuals.

I have an old '96 Jeep ZJ project vehicle. It needed a whole new rear axle assembly. So I put in a remanufactured one with a TruTrac differential. With just heavy duty Auto Zone shocks, the stock 4.0L makes a pretty good adventure vehicle. I did upgrade the tiny 215/75-15 tires to General AT2 255/70-15 tires. It does fine in the desert near Jawbone and Red Rocks State Park. I really have been working too much lately to go much of anywhere with it. I did buy a '23 Jeep Wrangler Sport S Lattitude for my wife the other day. That will probably get TruTracs front and rear, with the stronger axle shafts. I am considering portals from Weld74 instead of a lift kit or gear change. I like the idea of moving the pumpkins higher. This Jeep is intended to be towed behind our diesel Ram 2500 carrying our 4Wheel pop up camper. It is fun watching all your videos over the years. I live over the hill from you in Quartz Hill. I have been on many of the streets and off road places you show.

For the people interested in a auto locker I have a Detroit locker in my Tacoma and it is quite. I’ve had it in there for over 60k of daily driving and I drive pretty aggressive and it does lock occasionally while turning sharp but I drive it sometimes over a week without it locking up but when your on the gas pretty hard it locks no matter what. And I’ve not noticed any extra tire wear I will be putting a Detroit or grizzly in my next vehicle. I’ve also taken the truck down the dragons tail before and it was slightly annoying there but other than that it is by no means a nuance

@@AutoEdits That 'pinging' noise you heard during that climb, was the sound of your driveline binding up, and spring loading/dumping that energy all thru the front tires, that were bouncing the loss of traction between them. My older Chevy CUCV trucks came with 4:56 gears and Detroit lockers in the rear. I barely notice the locker is there...

You called it, ice and snow is a different story with a locker like that. That rear end will kick out in a hurry. 4 wheel drive of course helps keep it to a minimum.

@@AutoEdits Boss, I’m following your footsteps with my ‘02 Suburban Z71. It’s our family vehicle. Would it be dangerous for our family to run the Grizzly? We want to take it out to the snow.
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 2 года назад
@@klumsytone I'm not sure about that. My last trip into the snow was in the Jeep and there were plenty of times that NOT having the lockers on felt way better on icy stuff. For everything else... the Tahoe is feeling very useable with the Grizzly. If I were to be building a family hauler, I would build it with the posi-trac or e-locker.

How are the grizzly lockers work in snow and icy conditions? What are the pros cons ?I live in Canada
@AutoEdits

In snow it is great... I've only driven icy mountain roads once and it was fine. Not having much power really makes it kind of easy but I was cautious the whole time.

Idk if that'll cause more or less tire wear than an open diff my 97 tahoe (33"s and 4.10s) if I took off like you did I'd have to let off the throttle because it'll spin my inside tire like I was trying to do a burnout

Im starting to think i might have a problem with mine. I never hear clicking and am always feeling and hearing my tires chirp on my 37's with 4.88 gears. Not sure if is the tire and gear ratio or whatever but it never clicks... Any ideas anyone? Been this way since the beginning. Is there a way to adjust the unlocking sensitivity on these? I havent researched that yet due to other stuff going on.

You didn't like the g80 locker in it from factory? My g80 on my Avalanche works ok, no clicking noise when on pavement but the wheel has to slip a turn or 2 for it to engage

It would be interesting to see how a grizzly locker would perform in adverse weather conditions, be it rainy, muddy, snowy, or icy roads. It probably helps that it's in a full size truck than it would be in something small and light like a CJ-5 /CJ-7 jeeps.

Yes, the longer wheelbase does make it very live-able.

The factory "locker" didn't work at all. This is an actual locker and is fairly aggressive for street driving but is the easiest form of maximum traction for my setup.

At the end when in the dirt, why was there still clicking going up the hill? At that point it should have been locked.
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 3 года назад
That wasn't the diff clicking. The two back tires were locked up and thankfully doing all the work for that climb. The shocks are completely worn out so the front end was hopping and that noise was the transfer case and front diff ... not good driving on my part to let it do that but I just wanted to see how it solved itself.
