As a veteran who was injured early in my career I really wish I could have accumulated some stories that are this bad ass. Hearing stories like this was part of the reason I joined in the first place.

On the Army, it can happen. I got 35e comsec radio repair and my training cost the Army over $250,000 I was supposed to go to Airborne school afterward and they went nope not happening.

Yeah my 12t Technical Engineer training wasn’t quite that expensive but if I’m remembering correctly it was over $100k

@Sledge11701 To be clear, it wasn't that the training itself was that expensive. It's that it required a T/S clearance with all the background checks and investigations, so it ends up being ridiculously expensive.

For the Air Force, you get locked in but you can apply to cross train into an undermanned job after serving out a portion of your enlistment.

Speaking as a recreational diver, when i got my licence part of the course was they turned off your tank so you knew what it felt like when you ran low/out of air, i can only inagine what'd be like to climb a ladder at the same time

I think the thing with submariners, someone can correct me, but there's such a limited number of people that are willing to do that. To spend not days or weeks beneath the surface of the ocean, but actual months. The only real limit these days is the amount of food on board. And then, once you find those people who are willing to do that, there will still be some who for whatever reason just are unable to do it.

Currently in commercisl we use kirby morgan 37. Older helmets are the 27 and older still 17. 17 is being fased out.

enlisted ranks in the Navy is E1 through e9.just like in the army, air force, Marine corps, Coast Guard and space force. you do have some jobs and if you serve on board submarines thatit can take twoare anti-submarine Warfaresquadron.because they both use sonars. plus there are Electronics testelectronic technicians that serve on board submarines that also serve on board other ships.so it's not quite as limiting as you might think it is. plus if you want to change jobs, then you can change your rate to a different type of job.like I was a Aviation Electronics technician. I worked on radios and Telecommunications equipment on board aircraft😊😊so if I want to be a hospital appointment, I just got a request that changing go to their school.

As far as progression gates go, there aren't really any in the Army for going to Airborne, Ranger School, or SF Selection. That being said, Airborne always needs more Airborne qualified, Ranger School is a leadership school. SF Selection is not for just anyone though. As the Ballad of the Green Berets says "100 men we'll test today. Only 3 win the Green Beret." Most other schools are either cross training to have multiple MOSs, or having additional skills in your main MOS. For example, I got training on FBCB2/BFT, JNN, DMS while in. Not going into everything with those, but the JNN was basically adding 25Q to my MOS since I was a 25B. FBCB2 was the GPS system, so that was an additional skill.

Considering how hard-up all the branches are for recruits these days, I feel like you're more likely to be denied a transfer over headcount and the politics surrounding it, rather than being denied a transfer over training costs. Though I'm sure the latter still happens.

I got you Kip, Army is E-1 to E-9 with two different E-4 and three different E-9 ranks 🥸🤙

Specifically, E-4 is usually Specialist, but you can be promoted to Corporal. Corporals are Non-commissioned Officers. E-9 is Sergeant Major, Command Sergeant Major, and 1 (and only 1 at a time) Command Sergeant Major of the Army. There are also 2 E-8 ranks. Master Sergeant and First Sergeant.
