When I first discovered you guys my 43 year old husband had just died. You both have gotten me through many dark moments with your wit and laughter. Thank you from Kingston Ontario ❤️
Wisdom from you two! Dream ahead, do a little planning, listen to your mind and heart, laugh out loud often, learn from others who have experience and who are genuinely interested in your success and happiness. (I Love love love when you generously share your knitting experience candidly so I can learn, grow and be happy with my makes 💕!)
so glad you got your plantar fasciitis sorted!! I've been through it myself but luckily was told right away about the stretching. that's also when I started wearing Birkenstocks and completely abandoned crocs (my foot lady gave those a HUGE thumbs down for feet). Also, Brooks sneakers were highly recommended and that's all I wear now. Danskos were also the only shoes other than the first two that I wore for years. Now I am able to wear any shoes I like, but I also have Birkenstock cork insoles that can go into any of my shoes and they are AMAZING. Best of luck.
I just love you two!!! Never disappointed in your podcast. So full of information, fun, knits, yarn, and sisterly love. All of my favorite things!!!I😘😘
Great episode ladies! Between F/O’s, tips, yarn, and even discount codes, the episode was packed with only the best! I’m watching from Airdrie and really liked hearing about the Rosebud River mill. Now, something to make you smile, I use the closed caption feature when viewing programs. It offers a n AI interpretation of what said. It’s not always accurate so Aran weight yarn might pop up as Aaron,FOMO as Elmo, but the mistake that really got me laughing : Jodi is trying to order her own bag while Tracey shares another great yarn. Jodi sits back and gleefully announces, “I got my eggs!” There is a limit to AI and it makes me giggle. Enjoy your time at Knit City, I look forward to your stories finds and joyous podcasts.
Hey ladies! I’m an experienced sweater knitter and I have steeked many projects. I had a tough time with the throwback Bc it has 3 colors per row. When steeking you are only securing 2 colors at a time. The first one fell apart sideways (unsecured threads). To fix this I did two rows of crochet securely on each side of the cut. I then folded the edges under and used a felting tool and mat to felt the edges-this smoothed and flattened them out.
oh my gosh I love you guys. I am 56 and just getting back into knitting. I do not know anyone that knits, I am flying solo. I love all of your content. I am glad to hear it is normal to be afraid of knitting a sweater. I live in the western United States. I love hearing about the knitting in Portland. I can't wait to go check it out.
For sizing my knits, I record all my finished knitted sweater measurements (12 different measurements pre and post blocked) on an excel spreadsheet. Use this as reference to decide on size/fit of a new knitting sweater project - to compare to sweaters I have already knit; also keeps me on track when blocking/laundering my knitted sweaters. Love both of your sweaters!
Very interesting Q&A on sweater knitting. It has taken me several projects to work out 1 yes you must swatch and that in a bigger piece your gauge won’t be smaller so if between sizes go down not up! Blocking can help you grow the size but not shrink it! 2 I use a crochet provisional cast for underarms which gives a really neat finish and no bumps. Totally agree about picking up extra stitches at the corners as necessary 3. I feel designers build in positive ease so that the FO won’t be too small. I like minimal to negative ease and therefore often knit a size or two smaller than would be “recommended” and add waist shaping if necessary
Plantar f. - stand on the bottom stair as thought you're going upstairs, heels off the edge. Move your heels down below the stair. That stretches out the whole back of your leg. I did this for a week or so and no more pain.
To pick up stitches neatly, always go through both loops and pick up evenly through the same spaced hole each time. Picking up under the arm for me it doesn't matter whether I do the cable cast on or backwards loop the important thing is to pull that first stitch - the bit where you first cast on, pull it tight, and the next one too
I knit socks on 9" circs, and for the heel flap and heel turn I hold the unused stitches on the 9" and use Addi flexiflips to knit back and forth flat; I also use the flexiflips for mitten thumbs. I love them!
I love your chat about the sizing and positive ease of the sweaters!!! My first couple sweaters are lovely but not quite the right fit!! I’m totally measuring a shirt for my next sweater which is the weekender!!! I already have the lovely Brooklyn Tweed shelter yarn!!! You’ve motivated me to get going on it!
I had plantar fasciitis last summer through the fall and into early 2021. Wearing slippers every day turned out not to be a good thing! So, yes, stretching, icing, cushier walking shoes and I am so much better. I now wear Birkenstocks around the house (with my hand knit socks when it’s cold!) rather than slippers. And yes, please come to Portland! I am sure our Puddletown Knit Guild would be happy to host a knit night!
Tracie!!! Thank you so much for sharing your foot pain. I’m in PT now and the pain is less but still frustrating to me. I’m ordering this device as we are working on my calves and gluts. You two are the best 💕💕
I love the hot pink sweater! (They are both beautiful - but the pink is def my color) Looks so beautiful and store bought! I have hesitated to watch you two only because of the length of your videos, but I have to say that you two crack me up! I love how you play off each other - you are both so adorable!
Jodi go to a Chiropractor and ask about the Decompression program! I couldn't even walk with my Sciatia. After the decompression I am a new woman! I'm 73!!! Love you girls!!! ❤️
My extensive Sweater Quantity stash is recorded on Ravelry (which lists it by weight and quantity etc). Since Covid, I have only knit with stash yarn and found that knitting my gauge swatch first and then picking a suitable sweater pattern has worked well. Getting gauge is often an issue and picking the pattern once I know the gauge is magical!
I always look forward to your podcast! I especially loved this one because of all the sweater knitting tips. I just finished my first sweater The Weekender. I have to admit I did not do a gauge and I am wishing I had. It’s a little on the large size but I will wear it because the yarn was very expensive. I will eventually do another one but will do a gauge. Thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom! Please keep the tips coming.
Ahah! Imagine my shock when I saw my face halfway into the video wearing the Throwback! For anyone wondering steeking it is 👌👌👌. I have detailed notes on it on Fancy Tiger Crafts’ blog!
Tracie, I LOVE your jumper, the colour is amazing and suits you so much! I want to make one that colour. You girls make me laugh and smile. Love your podcasts. From Sydney , Australia.
Thanks for the tips knitting the glove fingers using magic loop instead of waste yarn! Love the hats and the pompoms are super fun. Great sweater talk especially the underarms and swatching. Enjoy the fiber fest!
Am late even watching the replay…..this just hadn’t been my week !!🤦♀️ I think me going into the hospital the 24th of September is finally getting to me the closer it gets here.( I’ll be fine but say a tiny prayer if you think of it). I absolutely love, love, love watching you 2 !! I can’t knit the first stitch but when I’m watching your lives or replays, I dream that I can …… some day maybe I’ll try . I am crocheting a doiley and it’s turning out fairly cute…. Pineapples, picots(🤢hate them) and I’m half done with 48 rows !! This is my 3rd one in a month I think. This is what I was taught at the age of 8 or 9 . My grandma would be soooo proud of me cause thanks to her I can do doileys, tablecloth’s,afghans, hats, shawls and it’s all thanks to her. And with me being left handed and her not, I’m sure she wanted to pull her hair out before the day was out !!😂😂
I watched this video just at the right moment. Helped me make the right decision about frogging some picked up stiches for a decorative neck border. I didnt like the way I picked up the stiches and I didnt like the guage of the part of the pattern, but I thought I would just live with it. No I will not! I will rip it out. Go down one needle size and pick up stiches again. So glad I did. Love it now. Thanks for your help!!
You talk about favorite cast-on for sweater. I bit the bullet and did a Norwegian cast-on for a hat, I actually really liked it! I think it would be my go-to stretchy cast-on from now on.
OMGosh ... Watching old episodes because I'm new to this whole knitting thing. You both are a riot and so much fun to watch. i'm learning so much! Just saw you mentioned Black Mountain Yarn Shop and you were invited! Check out Local Cloth too. Please, please, come on down! Would love to meet you gals.
CHAIOGOO makes the 2" cord you can use with your red lace tips and just buy the sets of tips to use,,, that is what I have done boufht the 2" cords and 2 extra sets of tops in each size i need since i have the full set of chaiogoo
I also have plantar fasciitis & flat feet. I developed a bone spur a couple years ago, acute tendinitis & have an extra bone that irritates the tendon. I’ve had to wear the foot boot also so that the inflamed tendon would calm down. I have to stretch & my doctor also suggested to keep a filled water bottle on the freezer. When I need to ice the plantar fasciitis I use the water bottle & roll it under my foot for several minutes. Works wonders!
Loved all the tips and tricks! I’ve had Cast on Bind Off in my shopping basket with Amazon for a about a year now. So glad to have your feedback on it….I’ll be placing my order now, lol!
Look into purchasing the Strassburg sock. It was a game changer for my Plantar Fasciitis! Still doing calf stretches, orthotics, icing, rolling on a ball and going to physical therapy! I really enjoy your podcast! Good luck!
I didn’t like the flexi flips so I just bought 3 Chiagoo 9” circulars that you would use to knit socks in the round, and I use them like the addi flexi flips. Love them!
This was an amazing sweater conversation! Thanks so much for all the information. I also had an amazing idea for a sweater design... let's see if I can get it out of my head. I'll let you know.
Thank you for the stretcher suggestion! I have plantar fasciitis in both feet and Achilles tendinitis in my right leg and am willing to try anything! (Chiro and MD and stretches have been helping, but 12+hr shifts have made healing slow). I’m working on a sweater inspired by you both and am loving the podcast. It’s like knitting at my LYS again, almost :)
Lavender is one of my favorite colors, but it is one of the hardest colors to find. On the subject of under the arms of sleeves. I didn't realize you had that same problem. I have been just picking up the extra stitches and slack and then decreasing the extra stitches the next round. I think patterns are great, but sometimes you have to follow your instinct.
Swatches - flat make all swatches 8 or 10 inches then you can put them into a Afghan. In the round make a hat for a baby/toddler/kid (or yourself) and you can always donate it.
I flashed on that Douglas cardi test with less positive ease too and I agree so much about intended ease. I don't like more than hmmm.. about 6" positive ease. This is the maximum I'm willing to go, except for the Rose Cargian, which has a shape and fit of its own. I used to follow recommended ease and I turned out unhappy about a couple of sweaters because of that. Now I know what I like and I know I gotta do it how I like it. What use is a sweater anyway when you don't like wearing it?
I made a size mistake with the Weekender too! My mistake was ignoring that it was designed to be oversized & that involves more than just the circumference. I knit too small a size because I used the ease I would normally use.The neckline was too high. So, now if I like a design with a lot of ease, like the Weekender, I think I shouldn’t go down to less than 1/2 the ease, (instead of trying to make a sweater designed for 10 in of ease into a sweater with my usual 1-2 in ease).
I’m a new knitter but I’ve made 8 sweaters since last year. To help with the underarm holes a great resource is to watch Suzanne Bryan here on RU-vid. She has a great video tutorial and I watch it every single time I make a sweater.
Did you send Jeff out to run the lawnmower for background sound effects??! Will be very sad to miss Knit City Mini this year. It really is a highlight but this darn Covid! Have a blast and will catch you on IG.
I’d love to hear more about choosing the right size. If I measure myself around the bust at 40”, and a size says 41” does that mean it measures just 1” bigger around or that I pick that one and the say 5” pod ease built in?
