I'm Samoan but born and raised in San Francisco. Last time I visited Am.Samoa was in 1979 when my grandfather passed. I don't remember much. But watching your video helps me to prepare myself for the day when I do go back to visit. Thank you for sharing.

My family and I lived in American Samoa for a few years as missionaries. I love seeing your videos and hearing about your family's experiences because it brings back all my childhood memories from growing up there. It's also refreshing seeing a family from the mainland who is actually there to really experience the culture and life in Samoa! Am Sam will always have a piece of my heart!! Best wishes to you guys!!

Vicious Species I agree that it is a fine line. There are things about life on these islands that I would never want to change. A lot of that stuff that you crave can be grown in your garden, like tomatoes all you need is the seeds to grow them, those are inside the fruit. That's the beauty of living in the tropics, well unless there is an environmental prohibition against growing the certain vegetable.....but strawberries and tomatoes should be harmless and they come ready with seeds on or in them.

One mandatory/fun stop when visiting other countries is the grocery store, so I was keen to live this experience through you. I've done it in so many places that it is what I expected, Funny part was you mentioning strawberry, where I live, I go to the local farms and buy buckets during the season, at the same time I miss good papaya and guavas from places I grew up. Just adjust and build a garden, I'm sure you can plant a lot of things, possibly year around. I do this here with winter and everything. The long green beans your daughter showed, I grow them in my garden and get so much that I give them to friends.

A few veggies grow here, but root rot is a real problem for berries, tomatoes, and a lot, of the other typical garden veggies. We end up,eating a lot of bananas, papaya, taro, and squash, though. It is an excellent way to save money.

Hello, I just discovered your channel. I can totally relate. I just was at Cost U less an hour ago. FYI Cost U Less actually has origins with connection with Costco, I believe they are supplier, thus that's why you also sometimes see Kirkland Branded items. By the way, I live right now in Guam. It was interesting comparing prices and differences between Cost U Less here and there. Seems many things are similar but slightly cheaper here. Also, produce at Cost U Less here is pretty good, also this is weird but Organic stuff is often cheaper than regular, esp lettuce. Also, Cost U less doesn't have like a quick snack/pizza area where. Now the only large retail store that has a direct connection with the USA mainland is Kmart, actually the largest in the world. I have a love-hate relationship since, if something breaks, your in trouble. They do have groceries and sometimes I do get things there, but mostly for Little Caesars Pizza. Now the main local grocery chain owned by one of the major families is Payless. Prices are more expensive than the mainland, but the key is specials and getting things that are set to expire that day. Also, they actually have one payless store that is an organic store. Then there are a bunch of large single grocery stores, they are hit and miss when it comes to cleanlyness. And then there are all the Mini-Marts, seems very similar here vs American Samoa. Now there is something I do like to mention that is great about Guam. Being so close to Asia, and lots of Asian tourists, and people living in Guam who are asian, lots of Asian grocery stores. Actually, right next to Cost U Less is a place called Toyko Mart and another called Seoul Mart. Both have nothing but Asian stuff. I go there to get things like fresh kimchee, and other things. Also, being that military is a big thing in Guam if you have base access the military Commissary and Exchanges are significant savings, but won't go there. Now some other general things i noticed. Just like you, you don't see gallon sizes of milk. Something weird I see here is 3/4 (96oz) jugs of milk. Typically goes for around 8 dollars. Most common is a half gallon which is around 5 dollars a half gallon. And then there is the UHT or shelf-stable milk, which typically is around 2 dollars but often can be found less. I been around that for many years, but sorry milk that can sit on a shelf in the tropics still weirds me out a bit. Now an interesting surprise is Guam has a great selection of Cheese. Like good stuff from Tillamook. 2lbs cost about 10 dollars. Anycase, overall I am surprised. As to bread, it is expensive, there are local bakery that makes local bread, but it is more expensive than what you showed. Wish french bread was 2 dollars. Normally for bread I get reduced price bread that is put on a reduced shelf. Also, another thing, just be prepared for foods that might be already expired or seeing food that is moldie. Anycase, great seeing difference.

To own a house in American Samoa do we have to be at least 50% Samoan or is this only in Samoa?

Great shopping tips! I always compare our prices to Hawai'i....food is way more affordable here!! Items like eggs, bread, frozen chicken, canned food, flour, sugar, etc. are affordable but air freight prices for fruits & vegetables are beyond crazy! Thanks for your sharing your experiences!

Atalina Coffin that’s a great comparison. We haven’t spent enough time in Hawaii to make the comparison. Thanks for the perspective.

I just happened upon this video it is awesome I lived in American Samoa for 5 months back in 2005 it was quite interesting and your video has brought back so many memories ❤🥺🤣 can't understand why they refrigerate tomatoes 😳😳😳 I tried to tell them over and over and over again and they won't listen LOL and the price ridiculous they're going to end up throwing most of them out when they could at least lower them to possibly $2 and make some money off of it... I get the part about being close to the ocean because my question was the same why don't you grow strawberries... I wonder if you could put a plant in a tree some place and before you know it it'll take it over, maybe?🤣 of course in a pot but why don't you make a little Greenhouse that'll keep that moisture and Salt Air out? Maybe some plastic perhaps something??? Some clear sort of plastic from Home Depot they can send you large amounts of from somebody you know in the US? Some wood cement blocks it might work LOL That is if you're still there... again thanks for the video be well guys be safe

Thank you 😊 There aren’t any restrictions, that I know of, as far as what can be grown. It really comes down to climate. Lots of Mainland produce like tomatoes and berries just don’t grow well here.

Thanks for subscribing! Nate is in banking and Melinda is a writer. For the first few years Nate worked for the local government, though. That’s the most common place that Palagis find their first job in American Samoa.
