What $100 buys at the World's Most Expensive GROCERY STORE 

Wow the rich are getting scammed just for the Aesthetic™ of shopping at a seemingly healthier and seemingly more Luxury™ store. People are not well.

A few years ago I went to the original store on Beverly. The manager followed me OUTSIDE because I left empty-handed. He asked if I found what I was looking for. 🙄 Please. He thought I was stealing. I hope the customer feedback department appreciated the nasty letter I sent.

It was very interesting. Could you do a video on the cheapest supermarket you can find and see what you could get for the $100 for a comparison. Thanks I love your videos

The sad part is that the pricing on some of these items are comparable to what we're seeing at regular grocery stores in Canada right now with inflation.

The lion’s mane mushroom is actually a really good meat alternative for vegan meals! It’s insane that it was THAT expensive, though😵‍💫

I worked at that EXACT location for a year and a half during COVID. The employee's don't get free meals, they get 40% off but that means we still couldn't shop there because it was still way more expensive than anywhere else. I did buy some of those amazing Mango's on payday sometimes though.

In the 1970's i lived in Boston. There was a health food store called Erewhon. I wonder if that was the beginning of the store?? Or it was owned by someone else? It was a very small health food store where vegetarians could find seitan and tofu easily. Supermarkets did not sell stuff like that. It was expensive for the time. I would love you to do a haul where you price the same items at a cheaper store. Also I would love you to do a copycat of that smoothie for those of us who can't get to an Erewhon.

I love this format! There is something fun about trying out more expensive items that are premade ( like the hot bar, peanut butter and broth) rather than just regular groceries. I'd love to see a hot bar try it segment! These types of places cater to people that are there to grab and go so I think their ready to eat foods are always good! ☺️

Honestly seeing Erowhon as a “specialty” store, wher you go to buy different or in-house items like that peanut butter and smoothie! Or if you want a luxury cut of meat to cook by yourself instead of opting for a fancy restaurant, it makes sense! But not necessarily for regular weekly, or monthly groceries.

Thanks for taking one for the team and trying this out! The peanut butter does seem worth it to me for a special treat, maybe the bone broth that is much as a cocktail at a nice bar per serving is a stretch. I really enjoyed your down to earth insights, but the videos was also good self indulgent entertainment lol

I was born in 1978 and our little local grocery store had a peanut butter grinder and it was AMAZING You’d push a button and get as much as you wanted and it was sold by volume. Same with coffee beans. They also had fresh squeezed orange juice and lemonade. It wasn’t pasteurized so it tasted like you made it at home. That store is still there, you can have an account and they keep a paper ledger, I lived across the street and they let me have my own cart as a kid because I came EVERY DAY. My mom and I never knew what we wanted until that moment so I’d run over, ask them to put it on our account and Bing bang boom grab the BEST food. They sold tons of locally made breads and cheeses. Milk from local farmers where the cream floated to the top. Big logs of fresh made butter they did in the back…they sell honey from local beekeepers who have an apiary across the street at the community garden. Yeah, I never realized how completely awesome this place was. I assumed it was normal, I also can say yes, I grew up in a very wealthy area so folks had no issue paying a bit more bit…it was a well known that organic was better. My mom and I had hens and they’d sell our eggs if we had extra. My great grandparents had a home farm, they sold some foods but mostly farmed to provide for themselves and the family. I got to run a little stand as a kid when I visited and I loved picking the prettiest strawberries and veggies to wash up and package adorably to sell. People always paid me more than we asked because they appreciated the effort. My great grandparents were French, she had been a pianist, he a luthier and over the years as they acclimated to the US they developed a strong distaste for excess, waste and capitalism 😮 They usually traded/bartered for things they didn’t have. Apples for peaches, eggs and cheese for pork and beef. We had frogs and rabbits to eat…they kept their cash in mason jars in the basement 😂 and they were LOADED because they stopped spending money in the 1960s. They bought their farm cash, did all the work themselves, invested in alternative energy in the seventies allowing a solar panel company their back portion as test area in exchange for the power, and they paid for a windmill but ended up getting money back from the electric company. They planted all these native species and soil retaining plants and got rebates. They also had some deal with the government and trees they’d planted. I wish I knew details, they lived to be 100 and 101. My great grandpa got passionate about organic farming in the sixties, years before I was born and if I could talk to him now I’d do anything to ask him to share his knowledge. They lived a quiet, simple life and they lived WELL. No stress, no anxiety. They had greenhouses in case things were too wet/too dry, too cold, too imperfect. I know they were able to trade with the local store as well. They would give goat cheese in exchange for sugar and spices. I’d go in with it. God…I haven’t thought about this for so long :( It’s simple, people should maybe…go full force? I recognize a movement to be self sufficient and whatnot but adherents are so hardcore and competitive it seems. A total black and white all or nothing attitude? Selling all personal possessions to move to a piece of land and just farm farm farm for profit. Artisanal stuff, when in all reality we could do a lot of variety. Forget monoculture.

It’s so interesting to take a look into this grocery store and see the crazy high price increase on items you can find anywhere else, would love to see more!

The apple, the siesta tortillas, the vital eggs, all brands that are sold at my local Walmart for half the price. But I guess that’s what they’re willing to pay to not have to shop next to us mere peasants. Wouldn’t want them to catch the poor 😂

I used to go to Erewhon almost every day when I lived in LA. BUT I didn't grocery shop there. I would get something from the hot bar or prepared food, and eat there with my friends while people watching and celeb spotting. The prices are definitely insane for grocery shopping!!

I would love to see what you do with $100 if you went back, either trying the hot foods or just being interesting things that your curious to try! Cool looking store, very expensive tho.

As someone who grows their own produce and is an advocate for trying to make or grow things on your own (for a far cheaper price) I’m blown away. A pack of cucumber seeds is about 2 dollars and theoretically you can get 20-25 cucumbers from just a few healthy seeds let alone the whole pack of seeds. 😭

I cry deep inside whenever I shop at Whole Foods but then I watched this, I felt a little good relief lol I am obsess with siete wraps and siete chips! I get the almond one then I put shredded cheese with kimchi inside with garlic powder, ginger powder & I also add cilantros! Soooo divine!

This is a normal grocery store in Hawaii no joke… one bag of groceries is going to be close too $100. I wasn’t expecting her to get so much for $100

It’s interesting because I felt like several of the produce item prices, adjusted for currency differences, are similar to what I pay at my low end/cheap grocery store where I live in Canada😩 and I don’t live anywhere remote or particularly expensive either. Like I’ve definitely seen little bundles of carrots like that for $3-4 (Altough I buy the big bags of ugly ones for $2), cilantro is definitely the same price, Apples were quite similar, I don’t eat zucchini but I think we’re doing about $1-2/lb on vegetables like that right now so also similar. Very interesting. Some of the other items I’d equate to your typical higher end grocery store here, so it’s interesting that this is considered almost ultra high end. I love seeing shopping trips like this, it’s cool to see the differences as well as discover some similarities☺️ I could see, if it’s important to you, something you enjoy and can afford, purchasing some of the house made items from them. The bone broth was definitely worth it, that stuff is time consuming as well as energy consuming to make and the end result is definitely worth it.

Such a fun and very interesting video! In Amsterdam we have stores like this too but people tend to just buy a couple of the special heathy items but not all their groceries, that makes it doable.

I'm an Aldi shopper that wishes she had a Trader Joe's, I could never afford to shop there, but as a home canner, I love that everything seems to come in a glass jar that I could happily re-use. Those eggs are on point though, those same ones at the local Kroger are $8.99

^ occasionally I go to this store just to find new healthier items I can’t find at Whole Foods or elsewhere. It’s way over priced for many things but in the LA area you got people who are super rich so this store caters to them and those who only shop at this store. Me I go to multiple stores cause I like different things at different places like Ralph’s, Whole Foods, TJ’s…. But let me tell you the options at London food stores are 10x better than the US. Loved there for a semester for uni and was blown away at the store options and also the premade meal options!

Erewon sounds like a neighborhood in Rivendell where they sell high fashion food. Basics the same but branded, so you pay a lot. It works unsurprisingly, the store could probably pay their monthly bills + salaries from just one day 😂

Such a fun video! I personally think some of the prices aren’t that outrageous; the bone broth (like you said; gas, time, whole chicken and bones), peanut butter ($5.88 at Walmart now for a smaller jar of natural organic in Las Vegas), and that beef. I was surprised anything was $1.99 (taco seasoning). That said, the apple was so expensive, goodness! More of these videos please! Great to see you making content again! Beautiful white sweater btw!

I was curious and looked up comparable items at my local Kroger and priced them out: Same pack of 12 count eggs: $8.99 100% whole wheat bread (Orowheat): $6.49 1 count organic carrots: $1.99 Siete flour tortilla: $8.99 1 count organic cilantro: $1.29 Taco seasoning: $1 (El paso) $.50 (store brand) Organic zucchini: $2.29/lb Organic honey crisp apple: $3.49/lb

For me as European and polish person the fact that people find soup in a jar l(iterally something we would eat at least once a week, always made from scratch) fancy and healthy is super funny. This store is definitely scam for rich people to make them feel even better about themselves.

Girl, do your bone broth in a pressure cooker! Fill it up with bones, fill with water to the max, 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and pressure cook on high for 1:30-2 hr. It’s suuuuuuper gelatinous.

She had the right idea with the peanut butter and eggs. Finding things there that can be used for multiple meals and are only 2x or 3x the usual price is probably the best you'll do for proteins.

I’ve lived in California and currently live in Florida. When I see California grocery prices again it amazes me. Generally groceries are so much more expensive here in Florida. These prices aren’t too far off of Publix and for some items were cheaper!

We make and can broth regularly in our pressure canner and I can make at least 7 qts of broth that jiggles from just a few leftover poultry carcasses and just a few hours.

The Erewhon peanut butter has slightly more fat and some added sugars. Not by a lot but that could 100% factor in the flavor. I've added organic honey to my kirkland peanut butter and it tastes just as good. Because of the sugar lol.

The thing is, they have a LOT of stuff for very normal prices for the quality you’re getting. Yes they have some extremes, but not all crazy

I've purchased those eggs from the regular store a few times. It's safe to say they must be pretty legit eggs if they are the only ones sold at the EreWhon store lol. Thanks for sharing the experience, I never knew there was an "exclusive" elite store in LA.

Erewhon is great for prepackaged food, hot + cold bar + some hard to find artisan labels. Otherwise, it's all triple the price for stuff you can easily get at Whole Foods/Lassen's.

I just discovered your videos today via the one star-rated cookbook episode popping up in my feed. Your energy is so sweet and chill, and just what I needed today. I like that you try to be fair and balanced in your reviews. I was fully prepared to hate on everything you bought in this video but I have to admit, I couldn't stay mad at the bonebroth and the peanut butter. Like for the occasional purchase, I could now seriously see myself going there. Off to watch more of your videos!

So Errewhon is as if Whole Foods grew up with a mom or grandma at home who cooked everything from Scratch

*Me, living in Northern Rural Ontario, where price-fixing and inflation among other things are problematic*: "Yeah, I don't pay that much cheaper for those items where I live... Maybe $1-5 CAD less per item?" :'( Also, if you go up *way north* in Canada, it is that expensive often, if not MORE SO for certain BASIC groceries, not even fancy groceries! That is where something like 4L of milk costs over $20... and people are told they have to eat "western" and "North American" cuisine instead of locally sourced food and following indigenous (Inuit) cooking traditions in Northern Canada!! Now THAT would be a video I would be interested in watching - someone visiting rural Northern Canada and just trying to stick to a $100 budget for food. Certainly, I think would be an eye-opening experience for many!!

Some of these prices are pretty comparable to what stuff costs at a generic supermarket here in Australia.
