A wide selection of groceries at REMA 1000 , one of the low price supermarket chain in Norway.
As Svolvaer is the biggest town in Lofoten Islands, the supermarkets offer a wide variety of goods. Along the way from Svolvaer to Å, we only encounter 2 stores of REMA 1000 ie Svolvaer and Leknes.
Most shops in Lofoten are closed on Sunday. Even the supermarket are close too but some do open up a very small section with limited choices.
Beer and wine are only available for purchase up to certain time in a day and not available on Sunday. It is very strict and there is age limit too.
Another thing about Norway is the plastic bottle deposit scheme. Consumers pay a small deposit-or “pant”(paunt)-of 2 to 3 krone on every bottle they buy ( around USD 20 to 30 cents/ RM1 to RM1.50 ). They can then return their empties to a “reverse vending machine” for an instant refund.
Customers will then be able to get that money back if they return them to be recycled. The goal is to achieve a 90 per cent collection rate of bottles and cans by 2024.
So watch out for "PANT" word printed on the bottle label. The "reverse vending machine" usually located at a corner in the supermarket. You will be refunded in a form of cash voucher of the supermarket and can be used to pay the groceries etc.
