Newfoundland's are known for being calm. In Peter Pan, Nana is actually a Newfoundland. I love these dogs (and Leonbergers) but it's just SO. MUCH. HAIR.
Gotta say, after 10 years as a vet tech, I’m impressed. Dr. Mike is DEF not a veterinarian, but that dog is more well groomed than 99% of patients I’ve seen. And now my need for a Newfie has returned.
It's really cute but the yawning is a sign of I don't like what is happening and the licking is a sign of you're too close I'm uncomfortable but I trust you and will submit so please don't hurt me. It's not that he's scared of his Dr Mike or anything, he's just letting him know hey this isn't fun I'd rather not but if you insist I will because I trust you. Too many people miss dog yawning as a sign of discomfort and then are the first people to go Hey this dog big me without warning. No he warned you, you just missed it.
As a vet student, seeing Dr. Mike treating his cute dog so well makes me really happy! You'd think that's common sense, but as someone who already works with domestic animals, human negligence to animal can really be stressing. Last week there was a poor dalmatian that died from having too many ticks. And it wasn't even his tutor who took him to the clinic, but actually the housekeeper. For a dog to die of ticks, it only means his tutors simply ignored it for too damn long. Animals really don't deserve this...
@@Silver_wind_1987_ if you take care of your dog as you should, they are not expansive to treat. But with negligence, everything can double the price, as your dog has a high risk of passing away.
How can that poor dog get into such a state? Seriously some humans should not be animal owners. My dad was vigilant about giving my dog his worming tablet and flea/tic ointment, had it on the calendar and everything. I usually brushed the dog, but he wasn’t the biggest fan so did little and often. My dad would clip his nails, but as he was an all black German Shepard, it was hard to see where the end stopped so he had a few trips to the vets with a broken claw, and the vets would cut his other nails as well. (Sometimes it’s better to admit defeat and get professionals to do something). My dog had a ‘shower’ with a hose in the garden when he got stanky in the summer, and if he’d been in the fields, my dad would check for any tics etc. I thought we were doing the basic minimum but apparently not.
@W Mari I know. But we give our dog her flea and tick treatment. Heck she's due for a checkup soon. Ah the dreaded vet visits...Harley didn't like one vet he was a door knob and acted nervous around our dog...which made harley nervous and this absolute dumb@@@@ wanted to muzzle our dog for no reason. Mind you give her carrots and she's your best friend.
@@Silver_wind_1987_ my dog was such a drama Queen at the vets…until the treats came out. And he was only muzzled once because the vet wanted to see if he could fix the nail whilst my dog was still awake/slightly sedated and knew someone could get hurt….let’s keep the need for stitches for both human and drama queen German Shepards to the bare minimum 😂
My dog groomer charges $65-85 for my chi so I would say $600 is normal especially in NYC with his dog. It's just better to do it yourself unless you really don't have the time.
$210 for each of my Field Spaniels; bus comes to my driveway. But that’s for the full grooming. Not sure what they would charge for a bath and blow-out only
As a dog groomer it makes me so happy to see someone so knowledgeable in the care of their dogs coat and skin! You can tell bear absolutely loves the attention of being groomed, it can be a great way to bond with your pup!
I’m a groomer too and yes! But THE WAY HE USED THE SCISSORS! 😭😭 Lol. It doesn’t matter much since you can’t really see his rear but still I was like noooo you need thinners and don’t cut straight up 😂😂😂
As a groomer I’m happy to see some solid grooming practices and advice. You and Bear have a great connection and a positive energy which makes grooming way easier. Not too sure about the kitchen shears to trim up the butt floof but still not the worst I’ve seen! 😅
i love how you actually bothered to learn about dogs to help keep him happy and healthy. As a animal lover and dog trainer i have so much respect for you.
I love how Dr. Mike clearly spent the time extensively educating himself about dogs, newfoundlands, and medical information surrounding them. Glad to see such a responsible pet owner.
As a dog trainer I love this! You’re so good at associating the bath with positivity. Cooperative care for the win! Great job with that sweet Newf, Dr. Mike
I would recommend to those who like this the channel “girl with the dogs” she grooms a lot of big fluffy dogs like Bear here. Pretty satisfying and fun to watch. She gives a lot of fun facts and teaches a lot about dogs too.
Ikr its actually sad how many people don't train their dog good because they treat it like a child. Bear is such a good example of a well trained dog. And hes the cutes floof i've ever seen
I’m a dog groomer and this is one of the best home grooms I have ever seen. Well done you. I do have a few tips if you want to make it even better and safer than it already is: 1) Get a deshedding tool, I would recommend the equigroomer. This will pull out so much more dead hair without damaging his top coat and leaves beautiful results! 2) When you trim him, instead of bouncing the scissors, keep your hand nice and still. This reduces the risk of injury to Bear, reduces fatigue for you and creates a cleaner cut. I’d also just invest in some cheap but decent doggy scissors! Other than that, I honestly can’t really fault this groom at all. Home grooms terrify me, as we see the aftermath of the irresponsible ones (deep lacerations, major rashes and infection, severe matting because people only brush the top coat and shave downs on dogs like newfies which should only be the absolute last resort), so seeing this groom was lovely 💜 You’ve clearly invested a lot of time and money into ensuring Bear is well cared for and that you have the correct knowledge to groom him. Seriously, well done from England 💜🐾
Bear is such a great dog! He’s obedient, he jumped into the tub when Mike told him to get in it. He’s patient too, he didn’t get nervous during the bath. I love this Newfie.
Omg! Bear is unbelievably adorable.❤ I have never seen a dog so relaxed, & calmed while getting groomed. You could tell is all the love, time, & communication you have with him. This is such a beautiful video. We need more Bear videos. L❤ved it!
The most 4 parts I loved the most are- 1-Mike explaining each step to Bear 2-Upbeat background music 3-Bear's cooperation 4-Satisfying grooming appliances and grooming. The fun part is brushing the teeth😂
It takes a real level of trust for an animal to feel THAT comfortable in a vulnerable position! You can see the trust and understanding in that baby bear's eyes! I love seeing the bond the two of you have, and thank you for knowing your dog beyond 'walk and pets'. Showing the animals the devices you will be using on them is INCREDIBLY important in terms of trust. You're awesome!
Bear is SO well behaved during grooming. You've obviously spent a LOT of time helping him feel comfortable being washed and groomed with all those tools. He's a wonderful dog and you're a great dog dad. You're both very lucky! ❤
Hi I’m a dog groomer! I think this video is amazing at showing at home grooming. The only thing I would recommend is different brushing tools only to save your time. I find it’s much faster using a slicker brush, a deshedding rake, and a metal comb (for checking your work) is the best for brushing out super floofy dogs like yours without taking hours (I made this mistake too before). I also find if you can hold the dryer and brush gently at the same time it helps removing some fur. Everything you were doing (especially with blocking the blade from the dog with the dematting tool) is correct and great I just figured I’d share some time saving techniques with you 🥰❤️
I’m rewatching this video again and I would also add that dogs can withstand a higher temperature water than expected. Obviously you shouldn’t use super hot water but having it be warmer then lukewarm is better because they’ll be less cold. Puppies need a higher temperature too
a maybe weird/cool curiosity: you can actually spin and knit domestic dog's fur into a wool like cloth, its called Chiengora, looking at the amount of fur bear lefts after bath i'm starting to think it would be a great business to make his own fur based mechandise 😆
We've got one dedicated furdaddy here! Such a fine example of how it is possible to still take GOOD care of your pets despite having a busy schedule. And I also love how Bear is just looking at Dr. Mike while he is explaining what he'll do. I wonder how much time Dr. Mike is taking to finish Bear's grooming to cleaning everything afterwards. 🤔
I love the way Bear just looks at Dr. Mike when he explains everything he is going to do next hahaha, like he is genuinely paying attention, what a good dog
As a dog groomer/teacher I really hope you see this and it helps make things even easier for you. Try a Chris Christensen coral brush. It’s great on thick coats like Bear’s. Also the razor blade brush is meant to break mats to make them easier to brush. If you use it too much you can cause more matting to occur. I have other tips too (especially with those scissors), but for an at home job you didn’t too bad and I’m happy to see you take such good care of him ❤
Dog groomer here. You shared a lot of good info that I often teach my clients and new groomers. A couple of recommendations to make that easier on you. Stretch you back before and after grooming a newfound on the floor! Use the mat breaker & brush BEFORE the hair gets wet. Upgrade your brush (Big G slicker brush by Chris Chistensen) & use conditioner and a demat spray. - changing your shower head will probably get you better water pressure. Great dog handling skills and Good Job to Bear!🎉
Omg yes! I was going to say the same thing! Also, definitely recommend a metal comb for the small tangles that are missed by the matt-splitter and slicker brush.
Bear is such a cutie patootie i swear, im so glad that you properly know how to take care of him. It bothers me when people treat big fluffy dogs not correct like not frequently brushing them or taking proper care of their coat.
As a professional groomer, I really admire how knowledgeable you are and how much you care for Bear. Your little tips and tricks about pushing the nail out to see better, making sure not to leave moisture to prevent skin infections... You were very thorough with brushing his coat and so careful when doing the scary stuff like nails. Incredibly well done home groom :)
It's in his biology! Newfoundland dogs were historically bred to be working dogs for fishermen. In addition to the oils in their fur to give them some degree of water resistance, they also have webbed feet, are extremely strong swimmers and generally love all things water. They are still used for water rescue today. Newfies are also typically very calm and chill dogs in general, and are great with kids.
You shouldn't be bathing your cats anyway... Cats are very clean creatures who clean themselves, and unless there is something in their fur (like they've rolled in grass and smeared a dead slug across their fur) then there should be no need for you to groom your cats. OR unless your cat has a case of fleas, OR is VERY old and unable to groom themselves. Cats are desert creatures, meaning they originate from a place with very little water, and take it water from the food they eat. Bathing simply isn't a concern for them, and can actually be detrimental to their overall long term skin health (cats can easily react to shampoos and soap - even pet safe ones - and it can cause severe dry skin) Brushing your cat is fine and actually recommended for older/longer haired cats because older cats find it harder to groom.
@@Wildmacc Wow! I have a dog, she has a very deep bark, it’s very loud, and she’s a giant dog. Neapolitan mastiff mixed with a king corrosive. But she’s the sweetest thing!
Wow I'm so impressed. You've trained him so well to be tolerant of the whole grooming process, and you know all the things! You should do a collab with Girl with the Dogs sometime. She's awesome!
OMG I WAS JUST THINKING THAT! bear would definitely be great on her channel, but her salon is in the niagara section of canada and im gonna assume from this video's title that doctor mike lives in nyc so i dont think its possible 😓
I admire Bear for being so chill and Mike for taking the time to do all this with such a big and hairy dog. God knows if I had a dog like that, I'd simply take it to the groomer.
Never seen you before but you do a better job of grooming your dog than most groomers do. He's also so well trained and so well behaved. I take my hat off to you, doggy daddy. 💜
@@Preppy_Princess2012 not really. Maybe you should get your head out the gutter, because if it sounds dodgy to you when it's obviously not meant that way, then YOU'RE the one who's a 'lil suss'.
@@gothicemowiccan it was just a joke JEEZ take a chill pill i was kidding seriously if i knew you were gonna be 100% sensitive i would have kept my mouth shut oh also dont just accuse someone of saying something unless you know they didnt mean it😒
Can just keep his fur to a minimum like a lab and it shouldn’t be a hassle. They also don’t live in a cold climate so the fur isn’t necessary 🥴. The choice is always: Fur maintenance Or Fur trimmings And they both seem to enjoy fur maintenance 💇♂️ 🧸🧼🚿🪥🧹
@@abzfrezno22 you can't shave a double coated dog, it interferes with their ability to regulate body temperature and damages the hair, possibly causing it to never grow correctly again. Standard poodles can be quite large dogs and you can shave them as short as you like. They have ugly skulls tho, like a dinosaur 😂 my poodle was 27 inches at the shoulder and 60 pounds. With short hair he took maybe 10 minutes to groom every few days. Long hair tho... Let's just say it's a daily upkeep for floofy poodles
@@somecollegekid4425 It's not necessarily that simple. Most small dogs that have a terrible reputation are, while due to the limitations of their brain sizes not the smartest dogs, but definitely not given enough credit. The problem is, look at the average owner of a small dog. It's a Karen. Karens don't think they have to train their small dogs because they're small, they can't harm anyone. So they bark uncontrollably. small dogs like Pomeranians actually react really well to training and it's upsetting that people just think they don't have to bother because of the size of their dogs.
I showed my dad your channel a little while back, and he is hooked! He laughs every time you get mad at something or when you start yelling “CHEST COMPRESSIONS!” He starts telling people in crime and medical shows that they need chest compressions! Me and him watch your channel together, and it makes us both happy, but it also creates happy memories! So thank you for being an amazing RU-vidr, and for giving me these memories to look back on when I am older! Again, thank you Dr. Mike! 💝😁
I had a newfy when I was a kid, he was the best dog a kid could ask for. He passed awhile ago but seeing stuff like this still makes me tear up sometimes. Loved you Ringo, the goodest boy ever.
My uncooperative Yorkie loves watching things and to groom him I showed him this vid and said, “see bear is being a good boy. You have to be like that too.” And then he was a good boy after he saw bear not making a fuss about getting blow-dried. Thank you bear for being a good role model for my little Yorkie Pluto. 😊 Maybe one day bear will meet Pluto bc I live 30 min from NYC so who knows? Edit: 218 likes??!?!?!?! Maybe he'll see this 😆
Tell me about it. It's like how it was with Mike Bettes; a meteorologist at The Weather Channel. Following the EF5 tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011 Mike Bettes adopted an orphaned Golden Retriever and named her Joplyn. Sadly, Joplyn died in May of last year from natural causes.
That shot at 10:10 scared me. I knew that Bear is a big dog, but he's as big as Doctor Mike is tall now?! Jesus, he's one huge, sweet, wonderful, (maybe a little spoiled ;) ) gentle giant. I would give everything to own such a wonderful, huge, cuddly dog one day!
