I needed this. I've been stuck on tryna do a Timbo style bounce from the mid-late 2000s. So I can take these examples and go back head strong! Thanks Will!
HOW DARE YOU TALK SHT ABOUT 100 GECS, "stupid horse" is the music Beethoven would be making if he was still alive, but NO he's dead af like a dead parrot, so Dylan Brady and Laura les, known as 100 gecs, decided to literally invent music PERIOD, to show sebastian bach and mozart how to make fking great music, cause apparently those mf are also dead, and they didnt make "stupid horse" even when the were alive right ?? how weird is it rlly ?? gec dropped their 1000 album and since then, every music making person on the entire planet earth has been very quiet, coincidence ??? NUH HUH, I don't think so !! Great vid tho :) !
when u get to god tier programer you realise that the degree of swing changes throughout rhythmic phrases. For example Crazy in love by beyonce, the drum sample progressively becomes straighter towards the end of bar which continually keeps the swing fresh.
Awesome stuff! I like how you seemlessly went from talking specifically about groove theory to some real composing strategies. I know for a fact that I will use The strategy of: making a bouncy loop, then at specific points muting (or removing) elements and introduce something more sporadic, like a fill or something. It truly felt like a hack. This was very useful for me, as I Am very new to producing music in DAWs. Thanks dude.
I totally agree with Squiggles, the quality of your videos (and effect racks) is amazing. Would love if you could make a complete (paid) course about groove. I have looked everywhere but there’s not much quality content I can find about hip hop type drums and not EDM style
It’s my absolute pleasure and I just thank everyone like you and Squiggles for showing so much support! Paid courses are in the pipeline but will work on more groove templates and episodes for the coming weeks!
When i listened to this, I was like this sounds like Bonobo, then you immediately just said its a little bit like bonobo haha. Such a good vid cos it talks about interest overt the whole arrangement rather than on just a 4 bar loop
That's a cleeeean mac tat I noticed on your arm there brother. I thought that's what it was when I saw the Pittsburgh P. He's a huge inspiration to me and part of the reason I'm here learning about Ableton. Great Video!
Thank you so much for the kind words and for noticing! Huge inspiration to me as well, our paths crossed only once but it’s an impression that will stay with me forever and, like you, keep me a student of the musical tools! Onwards and upwards!
I can never come up with rhythms like this in the first place. I don't know which kind of sound should go where. What am I missing, besides beating my head into the wall?
A salute to the thumbnail. That scene from fade to black was classic. " I need something that got that bounce" .. "timbo says bounce coming up" Then plays a classic
wow, you weren't kidding I recognize the technique in professional music but have never worked out how to do it proper, really helpful video Will! and your demo loop was fire as always
Really nice mate - overall flavour of the track was cool too. One thing I've never been certain on with groove is, if I'm looking for that kind of push-pull vibe (think Ontario or Figures by Bonobo), which hits to do behind the beat and which ones to bring forward. Any thoughts on that?
Both can be achieved with hats! Hats in front of the snare sound pushed, hats behind the snare sound lazy. But generally there are no particular rules!
A great reference for what "that bounce" sounds like is the song tell me when to go by E-40. I immediately thought of that watching this. Shit got bounce like a trampoline park.
Does the Ableton delay actually print once you export the track on live 11? Cause that was an issue on 10 so I stuck with humanizing by manually moving the audio or midi.
a subtle thing but not having a little background music really makes this feel like a classroom situation and makes it less interesting, amazing content though thanks for uploading, learned a lot :)
