I remember listening to this in my sister's room as a kid. Shag carpet on the walls, bead and shells in strings hanging in the doorway, the smell of incense drifting through the air, and mom yelling "turn down that damn hippy crap" from downstairs. oh my....those were the days!!
😊 it sounds like my house. Except it was my father yelling "Turn that God damn hippie music off!" "Jesus Christ why do they always have to scream!" So I saved up some money and bought a pair of Koss headphones. That ended that.
I was just a kid when this came out, too, and my sister and brother and I would pretend to be hippies. One of us would play the role of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Beatles' guru, and order the others to sit in the lotus position and meditate.
My brothers had this playing in their room and my sister and I would go in. Susie sometimes but me always dancing around minus the decor add posters instead
Stephen Stills is one of the most underappreciated musicians of the past half century. Great vocalist, guitarist, writer, and producer. I first heard him in Buffalo Springfield, but he's been instrumental (no pun intended) in forming several other groups. Listen to some Manassas! By the way, he's the lead guitar on this song.
@@bkm2797that transplanted liver helped him, but he blew thru that one too. Another case of a liver going to an aging alcoholic instead of some younger, less famous regular dying person. Hmph. Happens all the time, but it’s still wrong.
Nobody harmonized quite like CSNY. They really set the bar high. And all their music was meaningful. Just a joy to listen to. Thanks for reacting to this one. Have a great night.
I was about to say the same thing. I am forever grateful to have lived during this era. From their first album in '69 ( still have it ) to listening to them now on RU-vid, with young folks reacting to their magic, I've been there with them. There's just one puzzling question that keeps popping up: I was 24 years old in 1969 - my next birthday I'll turn 78...where the hell did all that time go???
Another song where I’m reacting “I grew up at the right time”. The 1970s had more incredible music than any decade. I’m lucky. And I’m happy y’all liked this.
This whole album is worth your time. Not a concept album, but put together in a way that takes you on a journey, but not an unfamiliar one. Deja Vu is not just a clever title. I love that you love it, but there's more to love.
CSN&Y is a collection of some of the best artist musicians the world has ever known. David Crosby of the Byrds; Stephen Stills of Buffalo Springfield and Manassas; Graham Nash of the Hollies; and Neil Young of Buffalo Springfield. They all had solo careers and also came together as CSN&Y to create music that will forever enrich all of us. Thanks for this.
After seeing Crosby, Stills and Nash live in the late 1990's I can fully attest to this. Stills guitar playing live was astounding and I had been listening to his music for years but never live. It was a completely new experience. I remain blown away decades later.
"Ohio" hasn't lost any of its impact...I was in college in Canada when that happened but it was still a disturbing wake-up call not unlike the deaths at the Altamont Festival the year before.
@Richard2003 These days it's quite common to see media coverage of security forces firing indiscriminately at groups of people, not to mention all the mass shootings that have become so common, but back then it must have been profoundly shocking for those who witnessed the Kent State shootings.
Y’all haven’t done Wooden Ships. Amazing harmonies and powerful lyrics. And the opening lyrics are right up your alley. “ If you smile at me I will really understand 'Cause that is something everybody everywhere Does in the same language”
Very under-rated wah wah pedal player too. Besides both CS&N and CSN&Y albums, he does great wah wah work on Super Session, his early solo albums and with his later band Manassas.
I’m so lucky that I can hear this track and it takes me instantly back to my Hippie youth and all the feelings that were in the air during those times. The journey isn’t done and much of the same work still needs to be completed, but music like this can remind us of the original intentions. Love and Peace. ✌️
They weren't just a "folk/rock"" supergroup. They were a SUPERGROUP. PERIOD. Most musicians I know who come from that generation will tell you that when you're ranking groups from the '60s, there's the Beatles, and then there's Crosby, Stills, and Nash (or CSNY). Everybody else is competing for 3rd. I can't say I would dispute that.
Once again…an album cut that really must be appreciated by listening to the entire LP from start to finish. And Young is instrumental to the song, some pun intended. This is on my shelf, I bought it the day it was released. Over 50 years later, still pristine.
One of my Top Ten albums of all. I can remember my parents dancing to this. They loved CSNY,Elton and the Beatles. I was 19 when this album came out in 1970. When my sisters and I hear this, we remember our parents dancing with their 5 daughters
Such a Classic from These Guys! Just Iconic! And with some Iconic Harmonies too! :) Just LOVE IT! So nice, and So Glad to hear It Again! Great Reaction, You Guys! ... Change of Pace mid-song was a Surprise, No? Have a Great Week Ahead! :)
Great reaction. But this song is actually the opening track in the album which you are showing the cover of in the video you are reacting to: DEJA VU. Which as the cover shows was a Crosby, Stills, Nash *AND* Young album. In fact, the first album featuring Neil Young. Just FYI. Also, I think that was Steve Stills on guitar. Also, I think that was the short version of the song. The long album track is better.
@@60sbaby456 yeah i'm a 70 year old rock and metalhead and bassist that almost gave up on finding good new stuff to listen to. nothing on mainstream radio but the usual hip hop , rap crap and pop music by the american idol crowd. BUT - 6 years ago i discovered a genre of music i never would have known existed if not for youtube. japanese all female rock and metal bands ! don't laugh - just watch the video for the song 'holy war' by the band LOVEBITES at zepp diver city tokyo in 2020 and you will have found the most amazing girl group that ever took the stage. no growling and screaming and they sing in english. more talent in one band than i've seen in 30 or more years. 60 songs - all self written - all masterpieces with NO bad songs
I believe this is actually 2 songs. The first one os Carry On which is followed by Question. The 2 songs are connected by a musical bridge. Love both songs!
Jay & Amber, You'll love CSN's "Marrakesh Express"!!! edit- correction-Carry On is on a Crosby, Stills Nash & Young album but Young isn't on this album track.
I don’t think anyone was prepared for how awesome these men would be together. Great songwriting, Stephen’s guitar genius, incredible harmonies. CSN were a revelation.
I believe it's Steven Stills on guitar. He wrote this song by putting an unfinished song in the beginning and Questions, which was a Buffalo Springfield song at the end
The Deja Vu Album is my #1 favorite album of all time. Even though I like me some Disturbed, Metallica, John Denver, Commadors, Heatwave, Peter Gaberial, The Who, and SRV. So I am all over the place. But this album speaks to me of a time and feeling that we will never see again. Guess I am just getting old. Love you guys! Thanks for all you do!
Guys Carry On was on the Deja Vu album which featured Crosby Stills Nash and Young. I love the studio version, but check out the live version on the 4-Way Street album. It’s a classic.
My favorite CSN song, released in 1970, and one that I thought Amber would like because of its trippy hippie sound. Another hippie-ish group with great harmonies that y'all should get back to is the Mamas and the Papas. Try their song "Twelve-Thirty" from 1968.
Stephen Stills not only played most of the instruments, but sang lead on most of CSN songs. He is singing lead on this. His voice is very distinctive. Crosby and Nash were great also. Rest In Peace, David Crosby. 🙏
I've known and loved CSN(&Y) since I was a kid! The vocal multi-tracking is always so great. There is a 'double punch-in' about 2:30-2:40 on "To sing the blues..." that is just an artifact that makes it all-the-more real.
"Carry on" is a composition appearing on the album "Déjà vu" from 1970. That year and for the production of this album, a fourth member was added to the band: Neil Young. Thus, the band was then called CROSBY, STILL, NASH & YOUNG. Thanks.
Exactly. Don’t know how they missed this, since it’s right there on the cover. This is *not* Crosby, Stills and Nash. This is the first track from the very first Crosby, Stills, Nash *AND* Young album (which followed the first CS&N album).
Doesn't sound like Neil's phrasing anywhere here. On Almost Cut My Hair, he and Stephen trade off and blend in torrid soloing, but I don"t think Neil's on this one.
There are a couple of songs with a strange music history with CSNY. One is "Woodstock" which Joni Mitchell wrote and intended to sing this with the band at Woodstock, but she had a prior TV engagement and couldn't make the show. CSNY performed it for the show at Woodstock and movie. It was only the 2nd gig they ever played together in 1969 and they became a sensation. Then, there was "Wooden Ships", which was co-written by Jefferson Airplane. There was a race to see which band would record it first. Released almost simultaneously on FM radio. Both are beautiful versions and master hits.
Takes me back to my teenage years and discovering CSNY one of the premier groups supremely talents and went on to have great solo careers and form some of the greatest collaborations.
I started singing with my brothers and parents during the years these amazing vocal talents were harmonizing. 60's thru 80's, vocals were appreciated and sought after by the fans. I don't know what happened when the 90's hit...but it seemed as more of your top 100 charts in many generes started to feature solo artists...w maybe back-up singers....but the harmonizing days were over for most main stream genres.
Magical song, one of my all-time favorite songs, can't help but sing along to it every time it plays. The changeup to Questions is just musically otherworldly!
Although I was very young when this came out, it was an AMAZING time to grow up, when the music meant something. And many (naively) thought that it would effect a universal change. This song really brings back nostalgic feelings, memories of listening to CSNY with my dad. Their harmonies were nearly unparalleled. If you want to do a little research that will blow your mind, search out how David Crosby came to hear harmonies.
This is CSNY. The first part of the song is called Carry On, the second part that begins with the verse “Where are you going now my love?” is called Questions. ✌️☮️
Stephen Stills is the creative power of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Their harmonies are stellar, but on their first album, he played every instrument except for drums, and occasionally bass. He's an exceptional guitar player, had a soulful voice and was a marvelous composer as well. And he has genetic deafness that started to affect him as a child - so how did he create and perform so spectacularly? He's a treasure.
CSN and Y were always so soulful and live Stephen Stills guitar and Neil Young guitar! Always a beautiful sound! Please do Almoat Cut My Hair!! With David Crosby singing lead vocals and some pretty heavy guitar!! My favorite song by them!!!❤️
“Carry On/Questions” is actually the opening track of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s “Deja Vu” album. “Questions” is actually a reworked Buffalo Springfield song written by Stephen Stills. Buffalo Springfield, of course, also featured Neil Young. On a personal note, Stills & Young first met in my hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.
Except Neil Young isn't playing on this track. This was recorded when the band was having difficulties with each other and it was hard to keep it together.
@@allengator1914 Neil Young also didn't play on the original Buffalo Springfield version of "Questions" as he had already left the band when Stills recorded it.
Yes, I didn't totally register this until recently, but there are various forms of misinformation out there as well. The album track is called "Carry On" and makes no mention of "Questions" being integral to it, though it obviously is. In one online source, it states that Stills "wrote" this song after being told the band needed a strong opening track for the album "Deja vu". But clearly, he didn't write much that was new, instead incorporating two previous compositions with a bridge that features the "carry on" lines. The finished product is very strong, but I don't think many CSNY fans are aware of the song's origin. Stills wrote "Questions" and recorded it solo except for Richie Furay adding a bit of acoustic guitar and harmony vocal. It's one of his strongest songs, and I still prefer his version of the song in the original Buffalo Springfield album, probably the last song he did for that group as it was falling apart.
Some people think it is Neil Young on guitar…. It is not. That is Stephen Stills. Young does not appear on this track even though it appears on a CSNY album.
Amber, If you want to hear an otherworldly display of their harmonies, you’ve gotta hear “Guinevere”!!! You wanna talk about going to another place! That song is one of the most hauntingly beautiful melodies I’ve ever heard in my entire life and easily ranks as one as one of my top five as Jay would say 🤭Seriously though I dare say that I’ve never heard such beautiful harmony and melody in any other song from that genre that I can think of🤷🏻One of my all time favorites😌✌️🫶
Wait! Neil Young was definitely on this LP-- look at "& Young" on the cover! He wasn't on the previous 1st LP. "Carry On" was released as the B-side Of "Teach Your Children" (#16 peak) in 1970. "Carry On" did not get a separate charting the the Billboard Hot 100 but was played on rock radio.
Neil Young was the lead guitarist for CSN&Y. But Stephen Stills also played lead and is lead guitar on this track, as well as bass , organ, and percussion. He also wrote it.
One of my favorite CSN songs. Stephen Stills guitar work was always impeccable from Buffalo Springfield and all through his career! For fantastic acoustic guitar picking and ultra incredible vocals, you can’t beat Guinevere, from their utterly amazing debut album. David Crosby and Graham Nash’s vocals and Crosby’s acoustic guitar are out of this world!! And the song itself is simply beautiful!!
