CHIGGERS!!!! I know sealing the pants and all helps with them too, but I can't feel them. Vaseline works on ticks too. My Dad cut logs for a living. He sprinkled kerosene on his pants legs, that works for chiggers and ticks. You don't smell real good but it helps. Dad also put liquid Lysol in his bath water every night. You don't smell the best and that is the idea. I think I hate chiggers worse than ticks, they are miserable.

The mosquitoes like the smell of decomposing animal flesh in the colon. The meat eaters body has a different smell than a vegetarians body. A meat eaters blood is more acidic. Heavier people carry more undigested animal flesh in the colon than others too.

I am an old "Army brat", have been all over the world, hot, cold, tropical weather. When I joined the Army I went to Ft. Riley and it's cold up there, alot colder than where I came from in Georgia. And we didn't worry so much about the bugs in Kansas. But then, I went to Fort Bragg, and a special forces medic told me about Avon Skin so soft. Apparently all the tough guys were using Skin so soft to repel bugs and back then we were deploying to South America a lot out of Bragg. So I have used that ever since then. Now, you don't need an Avon representative to buy it, and you can get Avon skin so soft bug repellent. I am not an Avon rep, but I still use this, and it is as effective as the old stuff. Hope this helps.

@@BLACKIETHOMAS It apparently doesn't work for everyone but as you stated in the video body chemistry is a driving factor. I found Skin So Soft repellent useful and many people in the Army that I served with in hot weather climates also found it works for them In fact, when you got to your unit of assignment and signed in, the unit medic was the first person who talked to you about that, water purification, hygiene items that were preferred because they worked for a majority of the people in the field.

Yeah, the only bugs at Riley are june bugs. It was really the only upside, because I'm from the South and you can't go outside without being swarmed. Came back home and was reminded there's millions of insects everywhere.

When I was a kid, our family spent a good amount of time in the Colorado Rockies. I would almost always get ticks. When I got into my teens, I would find ticks crawling on me, but they would not attach themselves. Am now 71 and although I pick them off of me, I haven't been bitten in 55 years or so. When a teen, doing summer work, I would eat green onions by the handful and during the course of the summer I began to smell like an onion and the mosquitos left me alone. Didn't get many dates that summer, but the bugs left me alone.

I logged, when I was younger. I got taught too stand directly in the skidders diesel exhaust for about a minute, every hour, when we stopped for water and too sharpen our saws. sure I stunk, but it sure seemed to work on those NH no see ums, chiggers, and mosquitoes, and they were so thick, you had to wear a kerchief in May, or you were breathing them in. Great tips! Im gonna try that Vicks.

Hey Blackie, so bug wise i’ve gotten pretty good at dressing appropriately/treating said clothes plus gear with permethrin, proper boot/sock/pant leg system like you showed and when i’m ready to setup my bugnet hammock or etc i’m good to go. HOWEVER when i just want to stop for a break without setting up camp ants 🐜 spawn out of no where extremely fast so peacefully sitting down without a groundsheet isn’t really possible. Would you recommend getting persay a large cotton ground cloth dunked in like white vinegar or whatever repellent works good on ants or a polyester type material that may or may not absorb a repellent. Ants are my biggest issue besides the heat this time of year

I've always heard about "sweet blood" when it came to mosquitos, it's nice to hear an explanation why. the vitamin b 12 tip is great. i've also always been warned about ticks dropping off of Manzanita bushes and trees onto you. I had a friend in highschool who pitched a tent on top of red ant hole (they dig holes out here). they attacked in the middle of the night, and ruined his trip. I learned to check where you're camping for biting and stinging bugs. wise people try to learn from other people's screw ups as well as their own. The vics vapor rub is a great tip I'll keep it in mind.

I’m a bitter distasteful old man too and mosquitoes are probably the only thing on earth not offended by my breath. I do my best to keep em away by having a pipe smoldering and smudging away with captain black at all times. Thankfully it seems to repel most other critters including liberals and soccer moms, but attracts other old crotchety woodsmen. Who knew fightin mosquitoes could produce a positive social outcome?

I’ve heard of using B12 to help against mosquitoes. The Australian army supplies Vegemite paste in its ration packs and has done for decades. This stuff is high in all the B vitamins; I don’t like it myself. I eat a lot of garlic and use Australian Bushmans which is high in DEET. Prevention is the key - long sleeve shirt and pants at all time of day here in Australia. We also got sandflies, midges and horseflies. Sandflies and midges are so small but their bites leave small red spots.

👍👍👍 .. now that was most informative .. thanks for that. Fire Ants .. back in the late 50's my Dad stood in a nest. As I can recall, he described it as a 'memorable experience'. Ticks .. I 'believe' that adding Garlic to one's diet helps to deter the little unmentionables. I enjoy garlic in my food (ok .. non-users may find the outcome socially unacceptable .. but then the best antidote is to eat it yourself .. then other users thereof won't bug you. If you can't beat them, then join them). Also, I'm 72 and am not going to change my dietary habits so as not to 'offend' 😊. Garlic .. I also swallow whole, a small piece daily. That way, one's breath doesn't give one away. It appears to work for me. Here (Switzerland) in my neck of the woods, ticks are a big problem with approximately half of them diseased .. fever and lyme. My home Country, South Africa .. in the 'Bushveld', taking shelter under shady trees to escape the Summer African heat is a no- no. That is where wild game rests during the day and thus serves as a Highway Gourmet Restaurant 'Stopover' for ticks. I believe that they're also attracted to Urine. 'Khakibos' as we know it (Mexican Marigold) .. the oil thereof makes for an effective natural tick and flea deterrent. Once again Blackie, interesting and useful. Thanks and take care ..

Another Excellent lesson from a true master of bushcraft ! I definitely didn't know about mosquito's homing in on your breath... Gnats & the eyes... The more you know...! I'm wondering if like Blackie, my various heart meds have made me "distasteful". I am allowed B12. As for the ticks, if you don't have Vaseline or Triple antibiotic ointment, or Sap, try covering the tick with plastic or cellophane. Anything that'll block air & you'll get him to back out. Fire Ants are a b___h in the southern U.S. and if you can die if you are bit enough times - anaphylactic shock. I'm looking forward to more of these on other flying insects, and the habits/avoidance of snakes.

Hey Blackie… I’ve not seen anyone talk about this natural repellent! Take a handkerchief (or similar thin cloth) and put it on a stirred up ant hill (preferably fire ants) and let the ants deposit their venom onto the offending cloth. Remove the cloth when they have calmed down. This venom is a natural repellent across the board (no insects are attracted to it). This can be rubbed on the skin, then stored in a ziplock bag. It can be refreshed by another stirred up ant hill. However, test this for allergic reactions before use… a low percentage of people may be allergic, but most are not.

that would be my worry someone would sweat and react to the venom

I am a third gen Florida Native, a Cracker, if you will. As a young teen we were fortunate to spend much time in the Boy Scouts and many hours in the woods. We were taught to take sulfa tablets prior to our camping trips in the woods, keeps chiggers and ticks off and slows the misquotes a bit. We would start the sulfur three days prior to the woods event and never got chiggers or tick bites. Later in life I found spraying permeation on boots, leggings and cloths prevented most insects from forming an attachment to myself. Someone mentioned eating raw garlic -- I have done that and it works reasonably well, the garlic pill works better and is easier to get down. I stay away from placing Vick's Vapor rube on my face as it will invariably ends up in my eyes. Each to his or her own. I have rubbed crushed American Beauty Berry leaves on my arms - does nothing for me. Dog Fennel on the other hand will keep misquotes away, burning in the clamp fire works best, can be made into a tincture. The only 100% guaranteed product that works the best for me is Deet. I use 100% strength. Better Deet than dead from one of the many diereses the little blood suckers can transmit.

I made a poultice of activated charcoal powder & ground linseed/flaxseed. Cover the bite area with the paste - then cover with a band-aid. Repeat if necessary in 2-3 hours. If in the bush you can use just charcoal ground from the fire as long as the timber has not been treated. Castor oil (castor oil is a poultice in its own right & should not be taken internally) can also used & my teacher once made a gravy with flour & water - because you have to add the charcoal to a liquid medium to apply it. Hope this helps.

I like to use permethrin on any synthetic clothing or gear like tarps or bivvies, but I'm on the hunt for fast-drying, lightweight clothes made from fabric that's woven to resist mosquito bite-throughs. DEET works to keep the bugs away, but I've ruined or marred many dollars worth of gear by melting it with DEET.

When I was a teenager I was in a wooded area behind my home and found a plant that had a silvery powdery coating on the bottom side of the leaf I wiped it on my skin and it repelled mosquitoes I wish I could find out the name of that plant and grow it for a home remedy

Hint, skeeters are attracted to blue, and light blue, like a drunk to a neon liquor sign!

Sometimes I wonder if all the sweet smelling hair products also contribute to ladies attracting more attention from bugs? I dated a girl once who had a bat fly at her head several times one night. Her shampoo was very fruity, so that got me thinking 🤔

I hate, HATE, HATE!!!! ticks! I took a knee once and looked down and my knee was swarming with them. Every night for 2 months I would sit there under my mosquito net and search for ticks and guaranteed I'd find at least one of the little bastards!!! Once I was done with the ticks I'd pull the spear grass out of my clothes!

The fire ants reminds me of my Marine Corp son during boot camp. He stood right on top of a mound of them and wound up in the hospital for a week.
