Ground Pounder Series: Military Surplus Tarps vs. Modern Tarps for Your Bug Out Bag
In this video, I compare a commonly available USMC reversible tarp to surplus Army ponchos and even an emergency space blanket. If you’re planning to camp in a hammock, you might need to look beyond the surplus market and opt for a budget-friendly tarp to fully cover your hammock. I recommend checking out Onewind Outdoors for this. Finally, we’ll discuss price vs. use and needs.to find your gear ph # kaufmans military surplus samson alabama. 334-898-1770 . or sportsmans guide website .

Blackie please dye that awful digi camo assault pack ill tell you how to do it as ive done it to mine and it looks awesome Go to the store buy a grey and a black bottle of rit dye like 8 bucks. Get a five gallon bucket Bring enough water to a simmer thatll fill about 3/4s of the bucket. Add a cup of vinegar, big handful of salt and a couple pumps of dish detergent stir that all up then add both of your dyes. Take your bucket outside and take the plastic frame out then put your pack in it completly submerged and make sure no straps are tyed up or they will be splotchy. Every 15 minutes for an hour and a half take the bag out and put it back in essentialy stirs it up and makes for even coverage. After that rinse the bucket out fill it with clean water keep submerging the pack up and down and dump out the water when its black or purple. Continue to rinse and repeat until that water is relatively clear. Toss it in the dryer with some towels, (it will make alot of noise but it is safe i assure you) once its dry your done but let the fabric cool down before you start packing it i have had one tear doing that. Some things to note: you can dye it any color however dont expect it to come out that color if you go straight black it will come out purple if you do it brown it will come out orange if you do red it comes out pink. you need to figure out what counteracts that color i know for absolute sure black and a grey works. I call mine the shadow pack and no matter what color these packs came out i never regretted getting rid of digi camo. This aint for just blackie this is for anyone else who hates it there is videos of doing this out there but they dont cover the points of the color messup. Good luck my friends

Just got to visit a town yesterday that had two decent surplus stores. All of them have dried up in my area. I scored a huge bug net that will work with my hammock set, a spare canteen set, a pilots flight bag, and a pair of arctic mitts with liner and beaver fur outer on the back of the hands. All for well less than $80. Can’t beat surplus value. As far as weight or matching colors etc., I really don’t care. I’ll carry a good piece of gear if it gets the job done. I don’t want to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on lightweight Uber gear that fails after it’s used a half dozen times. Did this with a really expensive tent that failed after light use and swore never again.

Bought my first British army Basha with paper round money and I'm a Silver wolf now, fantastic thing's and not ridiculously heavy if you cut off the stretcher straps. Am steadily lightening the kit these days though so will have to look into the civilian tarps. Do like your Marine tarp and it does look lighter than a Basha.

I recently got the Unigear 3m x 3m, only used it twice as a shade shelter by the river. Worked fine. It was one of the most inexpensive tarps I could find, but the "interior" side is treated with a reflective property supposedly giving it more thermal reflective properties. Overall it's fine and I'm considering going for the 3m x 5m version cause it's so cheap. Being super affordable and decent construction, apparently Unigear is an Australian brand that's doing discounts to introduce themselves in the US market. The 3x3 Unigear tarp is slightly larger than the USMC tarp, slightly lighter.

I did something similar. Found a 3 meter by 3 meter Chinese tarp with the same reflective properties on the inside. But mine only has 8 grommets; one per corner plus one in the middle of each side.

Hello Blackie, I am new to this channel and am glad I stumbled across it. I’ve been ground pounding for many years and I am a firm believer in military gear, be it surplus or current issue. The military tarps in my opinion are the best. Extremely versatile and can withstand years of service ( if maintained properly) and for me, being able to snap two, three, even four tarps together is the main reason I chose them. I’ve used them to create a giant canopy for a family gathering snapped five together and boom, plenty of shade for space for everyone. Any how, thanks for taking the time to share your experience and knowledge with us it’s great to see what other people have and use to get the job done. Thanks again Eddie wheels from NJ 😬🧑🏻‍🦽👍.

I’ve got me some tarps. My biggest is 20’x30’ for a 6 day + camp site. 20’x12’, 16’x22’ down to Australian army tarps (Vietnam issue and an Australian army Auscam tarp). Military surplus lasts - my Vietnam issue tarp and my Alice Pack are both 32 years old and in perfect condition.

What you were talking about "in your tent or out in the rain" that happened to me back in the 80's. long story short I went with a group of boys and we got to the camp site and it started to rain and a few of the other tents "washed out" so I had 4 in my 2 person tent for almost three days. We couldn't leave our tents without drowning in the rain up here in the PNW AKA Portland Oregon.

Hi Blackie , Great video. My question pertains to the poncho poles sold by SRO. It says that they are for a helikon tex poncho. My USGI poncho is bigger. If I were to cut some branches to use with the military poncho I have, how long should I make them? Safe Journeys to you too!👌
