THE U.S. ARMY PONCHO has been a part of bushcraft camping kit for generations. most people think of it as simple rain gear, but it can be so much more. it can be set up as a tarp, a shelter. in this video we will show a secret a long-forgotten poncho tip or trick on how to turn the poncho int a sleeping bed or pad. First, we begin by folding the poncho so that the snaps are along the front edge. next we will fold from the bottom until the corner grommet meets the midpoint grommet. next we will snap the ends to prevent the filler leaves form being easily forced out once we lie down to sleep for the night. We continue rolling and snapping the ends until we are left with a large comfy sleeping pad a d.i.y bed for the night. This will help keep us warm on snow or wet ground .it will keep dry on wet ground or during rain. military surplus was used in the making of this video. THE US ARMY PONCHO IS GOOD WOODSCRAFT GEAR. IN THIS VIDEO I WILL SHOW YOU SEVERAL SIMPLE QUICK EASY MODS TO MAKE THE PONCHO SERVE AS A QUICK SHELTER /TENT. WE WILL SHOW MODS TO ADD A LOOP INTOTHE HOOD. THEN WE WILL SHOW A NEW TRICK NOT SEEN IN VIDEO BEFORE A WAY TO MAY A TENT STAKE LOOP THAT WILL NOT TANGLE YOU UP AND WILL MEAN YOU DONT HAVE TO TIE KNOTS OR CUT CORDS TO ATTACH A TENT STAKE TO A TARP. THESE MODS CAN BE DONE TO A RANGER

Thanks, Blackie! I've gotten tired of preaching the versatility of the poncho. These young bucks just don't understand. We were taught to truly survive and how to use our gear.

We use to call them snow pillows, the only difference was, when you stuffed it, you layed on it to compress it, then stuff it more, then rolled it up. Made one hell of a difference when camping on snow, but this was almost 50 yrs ago in the mil. Thx for the memories LOL BLACKIE
@BLACKIETHOMAS
@BLACKIETHOMAS Год назад
yep its easy to compress then open one end add more and resnap it to fill it to the level you want

Hello Blackie , nothing to do with the subject but , I heard about a " technique " to withstand the cold when you do not want to be spotted by a night fire ! It is about digging a '' grave '' of 30 centimeters ... at your waist , then light a fire inside and all along this grave , then before night comes , we fill the '' grave '' and sleep on top ... So no one '' sees '' the fire and we sleep warm ... I know it's fastidious but quite convenient ...
@BLACKIETHOMAS
@BLACKIETHOMAS Год назад
yep its a coal bed or hot bed it works well when done right

Speaking of, and based your suggestion, I called Jennifer at Kaufman's Army Surp and she dug through the boxes and found me a decent poncho AND liner! And she gave me a great price! No holes and still very serviceable. The camp's don't match but I don't care. Long live the US Poncho! See you in October Blackie!

I love my poncho, I still have mine from the 80’s and another I got from a surplus place. They’re like unicorns these days. In January 1985 I was laying in the snow, wearing my poncho, and qualifying with our M-16’s. I’ve used it as a windbreaker, rain protection obviously, sleeping bag…great piece of gear, nice video!

With all the bushcraft knowledge I have, a couple weeks ago, I was out in the forest cutting wood, but hadn't filled up my trailer and truck yet, so figured I'd spend the night. I had a cot in the truck and an old green wool blanket and a military poncho. I set up the cot in the bed of the pickup, pulled the blanket over me and draped the poncho over. It wound up raining almost all night, but I stayed nice and dry and comfortable. I was more concerned about bears, as I'd seen a couple in the area in the past, but didn't see any this time. No bushcraft shelter - just the poncho and a blanket on a cot.

Cool, love the idea. What about using that last section of the poncho as a cover when you lay on the bed? Im not sure if enough is left to cover an average size person. My mind is racing on what can be done with the extra flap. I guess I’ll have to get an Army poncho and see what I can come up with. 😊

Greetings Blackie- One of the many uses of the poncho. Depending upon the time of season and where you were stationed at, the poncho was carried with you, usually folded up in your cargo pocket. On you during formations, drill and ceremonies (marching), MOS training and of course, all field training exercises. They work in all seasons and probably without a doubt, one of the most versatile items to have. Many folk dont have a clue how to use them, so its good you do these videos. Thanks again and be safe in that heat down there- Carry On-

Hadn't thought of that use for a poncho before. Should keep the filler from drying out as much as a browse bag so you don't have to refill as often if you are staying in one place for a while.

Never seen that done with a poncho before. Way back when we used to do that with two burlap sacks, they were another thing that had multiple uses, back then they were thrown out after use as garbage so they cost you nothing.

No because replacement would be a real test. You could install a standard snap beside the damaged one. Or look up Gypsy Stud for the same style in use. Which are harder to find.
