THE US ARMY PONCHO IS GOOD WOODSCRAFT GEAR . IN THIS VIDEO I WILL SHOW YOU SEVERAL SIMPLE QUICK EASY MODS TO MAKE THE PONCHO SERVE AS A QUICK SHELTER /TENT. WE WILL SHOW MODS TO ADD A LOOP INTOTHE HOOD. THEN WE WILL SHOW A NEW TRICK NOT SEEN IN VIDEO BEFORE A WAY TO MAY A TENT STAKE LOOP THAT WILL NOT TANGLE YOU UP AND WILL MEAN YOU DONT HAVE TO TIE KNOTS OR CUT CORDS TO ATTACH A TENT STAKE TO A TARP. THESE MODS CAN BE DONE TO A RANGER ROLL PONCHO TO ADD MORE UTILITY.
SURPLUS GEAR IS A GREAT WAY TO GET GOOD WORKING GEAR ON A BUDGET. IN THIS VIDEO I WILL SHARE MY THOUGHTS ON WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE A LOOK AT SURPLUS GEAR TO BUILD YOUR CAR EMERGENCY OR BUGOUT BAG. I WILL DO An UPGRADE TO THE STANDARD ARMY PONCHO TO MAKE IT HAVE BETTER ABILITY AND TO SERVE AS A CAR EMERGENCY KIT FOR THOSE TIMES YOU FIND YOUR SELF BROKEN DOWN AND WAITING FOR A TOW TRUCK OR A FRIEND TO COME PICK YOU UP

It baffles me that how these skills aren't part of basic training. These were hard learned lessons in the field, and it is much appreciated that these are being shared. I suspect that the experience of being in the scouts as a kid with a combat veteran that spent lots of time living in the field was waaaaaay different than others, lol.

Love your stuff Blackie, were about the same age & I've spent plenty of time in the boonies & the mountains & hitchhiking etc. And I did one National Outdoor Leadership School (N.O.L.S.) coarse in Mountain climbing in the North Cascades in Wa. My heart still wants to do this stuff so bad, but I just don't know if my body will hold up to it. 30 years in a Big Rig & other back wrecking jobs like working for Coca-Cola back in the days when they still sold alot of 16 oz.. glass, heavy shit up & down stairs etc. Limits me. But I think I just got access to 35 acres in Wisconsin surrounded by State land, so maybe I'll be able to try some craft again. Your video's are the best my brother.

remember that nessmunk was a old man when he is writing about canoeing its because he is too old and infirm to hike with a heavy pack any longer we all ( if lucky) get to be old..but if we are willing to adapt and change a bit we can still do what we love ..maybe i am to old to tote a 80 lb pack up the high mountain.. but i can drive up close to some place pretty and hike a few hundred feet to a nice camp and still enjoy the wonder of nature

Brings back memories Blackie. I also started out backpacking in California during the 70's and tarps/ponchos were the main shelters I used. One thing I have done routinely to them is to add extra grommets along the ends and sides at the quarter points if they weren't there already. If you can find a copy I highly recommend Colin Fletcher's book "The Complete Walker". I believe that the fourth edition was the last before he passed away some years ago. It is well illustrated ans goes into great detail on using ponchos for a shelter...

I like your bank line hack, i.e. twisting it, Blackie and will start using that technique! Although I have found that using round object like a small pebble or marble is less wear (stress point) on the material, that hood mod IS indeed Ranger (2/75) approved!

Excellent! Thanks Blackie, when I saw it was over an hour I wasn't going to watch the whole thing but I kept watching and ended up watching the whole video. It was very comprehensive and had a lot of great ideas. I've already figured some of them on my own. I don't have the army pack frame but I use a tubular folding camp chair for the frame so I've made some other modifications to my Alice pack, to make it work with the chair. Now when I get to camp I have somewhere to sit up off the ground.

Thanks for the video Blackie, great simple mods for the poncho. I was wondering with all your videos and surplus gear, I've never seen you with an Alice pack? As you mentioned you'll be talking about mods to that also, can't wait for that! I love my Alice packs. Seems like they would be perfect for bushcrafting. Look forward to the rest of the series. 👍⛺
