Grout Sealer

Since this video was made, I've changed my stance on sealers. I've discovered they make it harder to clean grout. If a stain gets behind or under the sealer - it can easily happen - then the sealer makes it hard for the cleaner to get to the stain. I clean all my grout with oxygen bleach. Stain Solver is a powerful one I've been selling myself.

Sorry about that! We fixed that on all new videos. It is pretty painful to go back and fix. When you upload the corrected, you loose all views and all comments. :-(

Price is often a barometer of quality. Higher prices frequently mean better ingredients. You don't need a sealer if you just clean with oxygen bleach. I did this video because people want to know about them. Sealers can block cleaning in case a stain gets by a sealer. The sealer inhibits the cleaner from penetrating into the grout. Interesting video but I have 2 questions: i) if you use a special waterproof grout do you still need the sealer? ii) when you mentioned drying the tiles, did you mean after every single time you use the shower?

I've always heard heard you should do a deep cleaning of your grout once a year & then reseal it since the sealing can wear off. It seems to make sense because if you don't seal it then the grout stay porous which lets moisture in & can cause damage underneath the tile. Unless you have a acrylic based grout, then it shouldn't be as porous & you might only need to clean. At least that's what my remodel guy told me. Do you have any thoughts?

My experience with tile sealers has been iffy at best. They can leave a flaky edge and actually change grout color and turn yellow.

You need to remove enough of the old grout to get back to the unglazed sides of the tile. New grout needs to be at least 1/16th inch thick.

Three would be good.

I have small hexagonal tiles with lots of grout lines. What type of technique and sealer should I use for all of these little grout lines?

Just grouted my bathroom floor with sanded grout. Should I use a sealer? I mixed my TEC product with water, and used no additives. Is there a better forum for this type of information, or is YT appropriate?

@social3ngin33rin If you want to minimize mold, it's highly recommended.

Sealers are not a bad idea. You want the water off the tile to inhibit mildew growth.

Hi! Could I apply this sealer on an old tile which was put years ago, or should it be done immediately after placing tiles? Moreover, any tips on how to trim the edge of the tile on the wall when the tile was already placed (so, the regular tile trims aren't an option) Thanks a lot!

Tim, I just got done (I think) sealing my tile grout on my bathroom floor. I didn't have a fancy brush/tube applicator but the sponge brush I used worked pretty well as long as I changed them often. The grout tends to chew off little pieces if you use the same one too long. Anyway, my question is how many "coats" would you recommend. The manufacturer says two but even on the second go-round I started to wonder if a third would be a better idea. Thoughts? Take care.

@rahilsaifi You could try to use my powerful Oxygen Bleach - Stain Solver. Go to the StainSolver website. Be SURE you allow the solution to sit on the grout for at least 30 minutes. Then add more solution and SCRUB hard with a stiff scrub brush.

Mary, your remodel guy is pretty much wrong. First, all tile LEAKS water between the microscopic joint where the grout touches the tile. That's NOT a waterproof joint. Second, sealers can BLOCK the cleaning action of fantastic oxygen bleach products like my Stain Solver. Go to the Before and After page of the StainSolver website, the dot com one. Look at all the floor grout photos! If the grout had been sealed, it would make it very hard for the cleaner to penetrate deeply into the grout.
