Thank you for this video. Quick question- -I see the ads for String Butler-supposedly it cures the D/G string tuning stability? What are you feelings on this?
It works amazingly well on Gibsons and epiphones(I've owned both and used on both). Assuming the nut is cut correctly for your string gauge, and lubed(or tusq) you will be in tune longer and 1 bend wont put the g string horribly out of tune. Heads up though, on my epiphone sg with grover tuners, there was less shaft to wrap the string with the string butler on the low "e" string but i do 1 top wrap around the tuner then continue winding down till up to pitch. Using a shorter length of the string to start than before installation. Hope that helps
If you put on new strings and tune standard, then want to change to a different tuning, like Open G or DADGAD, or drop D, etc., can you do that with these? Question from a newbie to these things.
@@strivingx67 I have them on a telecaster, a Schecter and a Les Paul and I love them. Restringing is way easier and quicker. I'm also putting them on a telecaster I am currently building.
I've got standard lockers on one of my Strats, they are great, I've got a Gretsch Streamliner Jr too without lockers that are standard and I'm delighted with how stable they are too, I'm not into changing anything that's already passed the tests for tuning stability, I kinda prefer the conventional type because to me they seem to be more bedded for the neck tone union with the body of the guitar from string attachment wraps around the posts.
I have the 102 on my 2006 Epi LP Standard, I bought the 502 locking off eBay but the screw holes are about 2mm lower then the original tuners so they won’t fit without filling and drilling. Any idea why the two grovers have different screw spacing?
You should buy a bonsai wire cutting tool to trim your strings. I've been using them for years and they are much better than the ones you were using here. FYI. Thanks for the video, I'm considering going to locking tuners and your video was very informative.
Thank You, Great Video!!! I have the Epiphone Les Paul 1960's tribute Plus with 106 locking tuners, and I just change the strings for the first time and butchered them, and I broke the B string to boot.
I have exactly the same guitar in Vintage Sunburst that I bought in 2013. With Gibson USA 57 Classic pickups. Grover 106 locking tuners. Quality electronics. Rosewood fretboard. Came with a hard shell case. For just $529. Awesome guitar.
put the second one without the dial in back on a guitar and maybe did not follow directions proper or its a bad set but guitar kept going out of tune. Will have to try doing what he did here to find out. Anyone here have an idea what I may have done wrong that it would go out of tune all the time? If I did not get that click first maybe?
This is what locking tuners are. Locking the string into the tuning post means you don't need to wind it around at all, and the string can no longer slip through the hole. Those are the things which can cause tuning issues. Tuners use worm gears, which only work one way, so locking the tuner itself into place isn't necessary and would stop you from tuning.
That's why I clicked on the video. My tech installed these and now I want to change the strings. It would be nice to know how they unlock before I change the string. Anybody have a clue?
I agree Steve. I have nothing but trouble with my tuning machines and I'm going to give one, or more of these a try. I would like to say that you should not clamp the string like in the video. Since it is at a kink. It is necessary that the string be wound a little on the peg in order to reduce the stress during vibration. Although, as experience shows, the strings usually break in the bridge))
hang on...if the wheel is tight and you can loosen the string is the lock just holding the string in place and i can tune up and down....whats the point of the lock
ALL a gimmick!! I got an Artist LP with lockers, I took them off, & replaced them with a set of regular Gotohs! MUCH better! They do NOT lock your tuners! They just lock the STRING in the post!

Nothing wrong with using a string winder' if it makes the string change faster' the better....especially when you're changing several sets of strings in a days time. As long as you're experienced and know your limitations and not over crank them like an idiot until they break.
