When I was looking for a home in FL, I toured one house that had a garden. Walking around outside, I noticed someone had thrown a coconut in the soil. (it was not planted...just lying on top as if it had been discarded). 3 months later, I closed the deal and moved in. As I did a final inspection, I noticed the coconut had sprouted. Too busy to care, I went about getting established in my new home. Over the next year, the little coconut grew in to a tree that stood about 6 feet tall. I dug him up, put him in a pot, and moved him in to the caged area next to the pool. It's amazing to watch things grow here. Thanks for the vid, Lead Farmer - I really enjoyed it.
Wow! Dude had Clip up for ( Only ) 1 hour and has Dislikes already? A Man being Positive some folks just can be happy! Thanks for your Clips man, we support you!
Dude, this crap confuses the hell out of me. I see dislikes all the time on happy, positive gardeners videos. Who out there is such a hater they're gonna dislike videos like this?
Joke's on them, the RU-vid algorithm sees likes and dislikes the same way: someone was interested enough in the video to take their time to post an opinion. So it just increases the video's visibility 😂 Also, I really liked this video and would like to try and grow a little coconut palm even though I think I'm too far north. Like it said in the video, can't hurt, a coconut is only $1
Followed your instructions on how to grow pineapple tree from store bought pineapple a few months ago here in Texas and now I have about a foot and a half tall healthy pineapple plant. Today I'm gonna do store bought coconut exactly the way you showed in the above video. Thank you so much for great videos.
Same here and if what I have read is correct, I should produce a pineapple from mine…my plant was started from a pineapple top and is now a 2 ft tall, 30in diameter plant in just 2 years!
I'm going to try this! Thank you for the clear step by step instructions. Lots of yourubers focus too much on sensationalized clickbait and leave off important details. I appreciate that you get straight to the point and show each step clearly and in order.
The things that's accessible to me i take for granted but Lead you let me see things are possible and it's a blessing just to be able to grow things.. thanks for you and lady lead inspiration and knowledge.
Totally going to try! Also If you don’t plant it, I hear you can open up the coconut after you sprout it and it’s like a yummy coconut candy that’s like freeze dried coconut or something. It’s like a foam.
They only grow to MATURITY (10 years) in zones 10+ , meaning central + south Florida, they FREEZE easily. Try a Chilian Wine Palm, largest palm there is, COLD tolerant, mini coconuts, worth $10,000 a trunk foot. Slow grower though.
Nature's unrelenting desire to grow is absolutely amazing and beautiful. I remember, as a young kid, using a long metal pole with a worn out blade attached to the end to drop coconuts back in the Caribbean. Now I'm in Ohio and miss those days. Just for fun, I think I'm going to try and grow this coconut tree.
What's really gonna blow your mind is that you can eat what is called "coconut candy" from the coconut sprout. When the sprout gets to around 18-24 inches you can crack open the coconut and what will be inside where the coco water was is a soft delicious oily, slightly sweet coconut candy! And on top of getting to eat an amazing snack if you do it carefully the coconut tree can still live.
I love that! I live in California. They have them at the 99 cent store they look just like that. I'm going to try it immediately. Thank you Lead. Great video. 🌴🥥🤞🏾🤗✊🏿
I live in miami and coconuts grow like weeds in my yard after the fall from my mature tree. The are easy to germinate here in the warm weather. Can't wait to see your results.
I live in Appalachia, the closest we have to wild evergreens here is the eastern red cedar. I’ve managed to collect one seedling volunteer and plant it as a border shrub
My husband brought me three coconuts. He said, two for how you do it. One for your plant".Lmbo!! I love this man. . So, I'm back to this tutorial. Thanks for sharing FAM. Peace Always
This brought back a memory when I was a kid...I’m 64 now. Lol When I was just a little kid, we got an allowance for chores at the end of the week. Momma took us to the store and we could buy anything we wanted, just as long as it didn’t cost more than our 50 cents allowance. All my other siblings bought candy and snacks, but not me, no sir, I found me a coconut and bought it! I was so proud of myself. I get home and while everyone else is sitting around eating their snack and candy, I was sitting there looking at my coconut a little dismayed as I couldn’t peel it, or get into it. Then I started whining and crying cause I couldn’t eat it. Haha Finally, they took a big rock and bust it open. All the milk spilled out of it so that was a loss. And the coconut was too hard for this little kid to get out of the shell. My last thought was, I wasted my allowance! But....there was always next weeks allowance and next time I’ll follow suit and buy something yummy that’s a little easier to get in to. 🤣
Leadfarmer73 and Hey Mrs.ladylead!!❤you still delivering as I expect you would..so grateful for your willingness to share your knowledge and wisdom ..loving and learning, imma try it!👍👍
Hey LF73 hope you are having a great day this is my off day .. just wanted you to know I started my coconut yesterday I will be placing it in the plastic bag after 6pm my 24hrs and etc.... I got this now👍🏽😉 let’s see what she do ...thanks a lot for all that you share her in this community. Oh yes, Hey Lady Lead you are so beautiful. Let Lillian know her off spring is doing just fine it’s 50 degrees here in Detroit today so she is enjoying a little sunshine.
🤯 mind blown! Genius! By the way, it’s the water that’s inside, when you open it. The coconut milk comes from grating the hard white meat 🥥 . Just thought you might wanna know 👍🏽
If I can have a coconut that naturalizes to my area it’s a wrap ! Going to have a full food forest watching you guys and I’m happy for it . Just need to clear a few more of my hardwood trees out
He's having some fun with you guys! They will not grow in a humid plastic bag with water. It's easy to grow a coconut with the husk on. Because of their shape they usually fall on their side. The reason the ones he showed grew up-right is because the roots grew down to the soil through the husk. The sprout grows from the largest eye. But without husk at least at the top the nut the sprout will either dry out or rot in the soil. It must have something to keep it protected and moist A fresh coconut has milk in it like he said. Lay it on its side half buried, preferably with the largest eye at the bottom. Water with slightly warm-ish water. (Think tropical rain - slightly more than tepid) Over watering will cause it to rot. To germinate you need at least 25C / 73F for several weeks. Once you have a palm it should survive down to 12-15C / 54-60F at night in winter. Check out what temperatures in winter the most northerly place in Florida where coconut palms survive outside gets.
I did it, and it really worked out good! Only thing was, that the little palm could not survive the chilly Dutch climate, and inside the house the air was to dry for it.. 😬😏I guess i'll just sprout the coconuts in the future, as they say that is a delicious treat! Thank you for your happy and informative video🤗🙂
I am for sure going to do this . I am stuck in this house, that doesn't mean I have to be bored ,thank you sir . I can create something new and alive in the north . Look out world. God 🙌 bless.
So happy to see excitement and encouragement on growing coconut palms. My grandmother grew one in Dogde City Kansas when I was a teenager. Have not found one in my part of the country. I am bound and determined to find a coconut this weekend. However, I did go to your site to see the update on your 2 new babies but can not find it. Did you do an update? Would love a play by play action on how long to developing roots, how long to see vegetation actually sprout, slow or fast grower and how long they have survived. Just have to pick your brain. Would be so much fun to be your neighbor and copy everything you do. Hope to get a response. Lynn
I used to be a massive plant nerd when I was a kid, finally started to get back into it as the pandemic's worn on. This sounds simpler than I expected it to be, I'll have to grab a coconut next time I go to the store!
I received one by mistake it was supposed to be dirt for planting veggies they ended up sending me a coconut seed so now I got to learn how to plan it wish me luck thank you for your video
So glad I found this channel....I live by the beach and have coconuts everywhere 🌴🥥🌊🌴🥥🌊 Can't wait to try this...heading to the beach to grab 10 coconuts 🚲👙🥥
Great video man really appreciate the knowledge you share I’ve always wanted to grow some coconut 🌴 just never knew what to do thanks for sharing with us
When I lived in Broward county my coconut trees used to drop fruit and I left em laying on the ground after several months they started to sprout on the moist ground
Great vid going to try this next time out at the market. My young son has apple seeds in the fridge nice n damp container well see how we do goodluck ! Much love from canada
I’m also in 8a and I’ve been doing research and people and other things say no. However, somebody thought it was a good idea to put palm trees in Chicago at one of the beaches. Now them palm trees surviving. They are raggedy as all get out but they are alive. If a palm can survive Chicago, I think it can make it and bear fruit in 8a. If Anyone can survive hood Chicago, they can make it anywhere
Hi, I'm in the UK🇬🇧. I love growing plants from seed or reviving ailing plants. Recently had success with a Fiddle leaf fig plant which had lost all its leaves. I managed to save it. I took 4 cuttings off the main plant which now have roots and leaves and the main plant has a number of leaves and is doing well. Hurrah! I will definitely try this. Thanks for sharing.👍🏿
First time watching your video. You explain everything so well without being lengthy or over dramatic. Not to mention cute as heck! I live in Jacksonville FL and we had such a cold winter and I lost my coconut trees☹ I thought I needed more coconuts with the husk on then I saw your video and I was thrilled. Thank you so much for sharing! Don't spend a second worrying about the dislikes, there will always be people you just can't make happy. Keep doing your thing! I'm subscribed now!😁
You should watch his pineapple video.. hilarious twist starting at 1:10.. was not expecting that.. made me subcribe to his channel just for that video lol
You are loaded with positive energy good sir. I hope your palms produce some awesome coconuts. I might try it. I live in a subtropical climate and I bet it'll work here.
I figured it was just something fun to get my mind off of the madness of the world bro😉 it may not live in the long run but I just had to give it a shot. 🤷🏽♂️
@@leadfarmer73 I have lots of those going too. My dragon fruit are still hanging in there. No fruit yet but they are too low maintenance to give up on. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Thanks for the info, started a coconut tree. Mine already had the husk removed, just looked for one with a bulge in one of the eyes. Just waiting for some leaves to plant in soil.
Although coconuts are plentiful in my Caribbean island of Antigua and young plants can be obtained easily l decided to try your experiment and it worked. To simply put a dry nut in the earth the way we normally do would take up to six months to germinate. Your method did that in one month. Thanks.
I did try one before, but failed - I think I lacked a consistent temperature, never before have I wished that I had my old airing cupboard back, but it would have worked. I didn't actually sit the coconut in the water either - just added the water for humidity. I will definitely try again, using your method - it clearly worked, well done! Have you ever come across 'Agri Buzz's' channel from Cambodia? They have a series on bonzai -ing a coconut and it is mad. I ordered one similar from Thailand, but customs seized it and destroyed it (as they seem to do with everything I order). Pretty gutting though. I know in Asia they use rice husk as a compost as not to use coir around a coconut, just to avoid transmitting disease. I hope you do regular updates on these coconuts and their progress, the timeline will be interesting. Thanks Lead, great job!
@@leadfarmer73 my family grows them belize central america...the unhusked just go bad.. there a fungus that will attack the eye and stop it from growning..the husk protects the germination eye...p.s. thankyou for all your advice these past year....much blessing to you and your family...p.s. my mom loves your channel.take care and God bless
@@deelewis7386 that is great information. Now I have to go find some more husked or fuzzy coconuts to try it. I’m just gonna let these sit and keep my fingers crossed 🤞🏽😉
I love coconut water and it can be expensive in the long run, so i will do it myself. I will plant a few of them and hopefully in the future i can have coconut water a few times a week
GRAND RISING GRAND RISING..................I Tried it and it WORKS, I have 3 with roots showing, and 1 with a STEM................ All the VERY Best Guysssssss
Love this I was wondering if I could sprout a coconut from a store bought coconut and you showed me exactly what to do to sprout one. Thanks man I subscribe!
You are such a great teacher Leadfarmer73. I found you while watching Homestead Heart make strawberry jam, and have been watching you ever since. I'm in TX and think our temperature may be conducive to growing coconuts. I'm gonna give it a try. Like you said, "What have you got to loose, a dollar?"
I have 2 coconut trees in my yard here in Orlando. One is a dwarf and the other is 6 ft tall, got it back in March. 3 large asian markets right by me, I'll will give this a try. And the fleamarket by me have lots of green coconuts
Dude, do you live near Evans? I think I might know where you reside because I seen two dwarfs planted in a yard. I want to grow some dwarfs and large ones. I have two coconuts I got from Melbourne Beach a few weeks ago. If you need coconuts, they are all over the place there.
I've tried a couple different ways that unfortunately didn't work for me so NOW I'm gonna try your way. Your way is a little different from the ways I've tried before and I can't wait to try it.
