I just watched all four of the coconut palm videos and loved them! They were so helpful and I’m growing 2 now from coconuts. I know it’s been several years since you did the last update and the coconut tree may have died, but I would love to see a current video of it if it’s still alive, thanks so much for inspiring me!

Hi Michael, thanks for the comment. Glad you enjoyed the series :). Unfortunately it did die as I had to leave all my plants with my parents when I moved to the city years ago. But might have another go at growing one sometime for fun. Let me know how the coconuts do! Do you grow other things as well? :)

That’s a shame about your coconuts. One of my friends in Te Kaha has been trying to grow a coconut for years. He’s grown quite a few tropical plants but the last time I saw him he said growing a coconut palm tree has always alluded him. I’ll share your video with him and also see if he has had any success yet. I think he must be in the 70s now but I noticed he recently joined Facebook lol

nice update Kalem. I do have to agree that keeping in the bag as long as you can seems to make it grow faster. mine was in the bag for so long and it's pretty large now. just like your second coconut. I've got it in a pot now, with a clear plastic bag just draped over it to simulate the ziploc bag. Also the solidified liquid tastes real yummy when the cocunut is alive and newly sprouted. I was thinking of smashing mine to eat it but it took forever to sprout and I want the plant.

The internal growth is crunchy and pleasant. I grew my first coconut palm from a shop bought nut way back about 1988. That was in Lower Hutt. I managed I think 7 in the hot water cupboard around 2010 but they didn't all survive. That was in Christchurch. I grow them with the husk on - the bit you often find still on top - in ice cream containers.

I had a coconut that grew up to 6' tall, I had it in the house by a window that it would get the sun, i planted in dirt with the buttom of the plant stalk was not covered with dirt or it will get mold and die off . which happen to mine, also spray the leaves once a week very lightly so the water traveled down to the coconut. I used a light fertilizer every two months. Seeing your video # 4 i will try again. Thanks, Wildjoe

Love your coconut videos, you're very clever (as I sit here eating coconut candy from Puerto Rico that my mom send me (lucky me, yum!). I wish I could grow them in my climate, but Nebraska (USA) is definitely not the place. I am looking forward to your next video. My mom has banana trees (they look more like fat small palm trees) and I've read that coconut palms do very well planted near them, due to after the bananas have been harvested the dead trees add great nutrients to the palm tree. Thank you.

A Tragic Loss and a Fascinating Lesson all rolled up in one plant. I think one lesson to be learned from this is Start with good soil to begin with and don't rmove soil when you re-pot it. Pull the whole thing out and then add it on top of more (good) soil in your new larger pot. I read somewhere that trees can be sensitive to soil changes... I mean that when roots grow thru soil and find a different kind of soil they seem to react poorly to the difference. This has been fun. Keep 'em coming!

On the soil to grow it in, sandy loamy soil is best, like a mixture of sand and peat. Coconuts grow near the beach in their native habitat. Water table probably about 3 - 4 feet below soil surface. They need a warm humid climate, may survive in your greenhouse.

I'm really happy about how well my coconut is doing. In about 60 days, it has already sprouted to about 6 inches tall. The interesting thing is that it's still in the shape of a spear - it hasn't yet unfolded its leaves. But compared to your coconuts, the growth rate has been fast! I've also kept it in a big ziplock bag with about half a cup of water and it's on a heating pad. The humidity is incredibly high and with the sunlight from the windows coming in, I think the conditions are optimal!

Great video. A vacuum seal bag is a good idea too. I have some spare and will try to sprout a coconut in one. I have some land in the Far North that hasn't had frost in 50 years so I'm hoping it will survive outside. I'll plant it in a Hugelkulture bed on the south side of a pond with a cob wall behind it to trap the heat.

@@lonewolfe4067 possibly, but it is not so hard if you keep your temperature Above 10 degrees celsius. That is about the point where problems start. 5 degrees celsius is the absolute minimum, and 0 for only 6 minutes or so. Mature trees can survive -1 for a few hours, but not longer.

If i remember correctly. you shouldnt bury the whole thing. You dont put it in the ground till the roots are long enough. Remember that this process would naturally take place inside the husk. So the roots should grow till they stick out of the husk at the bottom. Youd simply bury it an inch or two and leave the entire husk sticking out. As your store bought Coconut wont have a husk, wrap it in hay.

In another video I saw, they took a coconut sprout that was a bit bigger than the ones in this video, and they cracked it open to remove the solidified coconut water for eating, and then you replant it and it should survive. I wouldn't risk this, and I'm sure you would have to give it more water and fertilizer if you take away all those nutrients from the inside, but if I lived in a more tropical climate and the sprouts weren't hard to come by I would definitely try that.

They sell coconut plants that look to be about a year old for $25 at a local store, I thought about buying but it looked like so much fun growing from scratch I thought I'd do it that way. But now that I saw your 1st died after a year, it might be worth buying one of the plants just to spare me the regret of having one die on me that way. Or even better I might do both, see which turns out healthier after several years.

He germinated it straight up, so better to plant the whole coconut a few centimeters in the ground. If you germinated it on it's side, you should bury half of it while covering all the roots. If he would now lay it on its side, the weight on one side is going to become too heavy. The plant doesn't grow up that fast.

Actually I happen to know the northernmost outdoor mature coconut palm growing is in Newport near the beach. That's around LA I think, so you should be fine. If that isn't enough then maybe I'll try to donate them to the Conservatory in Golden Gate park or maybe a large mall.

I wonder if you water the coconut with coconut water or dilute some cocoanut milk in water instead of using a regular compost/fertiliser if that would help the growth, If the coconut water inside the seed is where it draws its initial nutrients it makes sense that coconut water would be full of exactly what the growing plant needs.

I mean i hope nothing happened to him. I would imagine his parents knew he was doing this channel they'd at least let everyone know if it did. Maybe he just found a girlfriend or whatever. I used to have his address, so if i can ever find it i'll write to him. I just don't know how long it will take. His email account should be attached to this account so he should get this message and just drop us a line to say he's okay :)

In case anyone wants to know why the "Kiwi Grower" hasn't posted in quite a long time, it's because he's grown up! He's been very busy with his beautiful girlfriend, hanging out with his two awesome dogs and working at the "Auckland ZOO" in N.Z. with endangered animals. So his plate has been very full! I know i'm very happy for him and i hope you are too!
