I'm from the tropics and I have never in my life heard it referred to as "eddoe" now two people in a row use that name. I'm 77. I know names for them in different nations and languages, mostly as taro (scientifice name Colocasia esculenta). Eddoe is a different related plant (scientific name Colocasia antiquorum) eaten in Jamaica. People need to know that they have to be cooked before trying to eat them otherwise they can get sick.

I didn’t know you can grow this is elephant ear. I brought it all the time in Chinese market. I roast it or stem it. Very tasty. I will grow it in my garden this spring. Thank you for sharing.

Great video, thank you! Can you grow a plant from the eyes on the tuber? In other words, can you cut out the eyes and plant them? If so, do you have to let them dry before or do you root them in water? Thank you for your time, blessings from Florida ❤🕊️🌞

I am also in southern Ontario- when do you start yours to be very small plants but ready for transplant - how many weeks before last frost? Big fan of your work!

To overcome the mold problem in bags, use damp long-fiber sphagnum moss instead of paper towels (not peat, not forest moss). It has antifungal properties and also keeps the surface touching the tuber at a much lower moisture level. The other key is high heat. This sounds wrong because mold likes heat too, but healthy growing tubers resist mold better, and heat really supercharges these. They would actually prefer temps way up in the 90-100 F range! High heat almost guarantees success with these. All your fungus & overwatering problems go away when they are extra warm.

Fantastic! I am going to try. Potting mix you use has any fertilizer or nutrient? Is it just peat moss and perlite mix? Believe there's no need to have any fertilizer or nutrient added to the soil to grow tubers.

It has enough fertilizer for a month.

I'm super interested in the 'high pressure sodium lights,' can you direct me to where you bought yours? Is there a more common name to these lights where I can do more research on them? I am looking for a light that I can put on my ceiling that is powerful enough for the plants on my dining room table that will be potted up from seedlings. Something that doesn't need to be raised or lowered as they grow. Sounds like what you are using?

1) I built my own from parts. 2) If I were buying something today I would use LED grow lights, not HPS. eg ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OWDV5n1tEYU.html

If I wanted to grow this for eating, how does it multiply? Is it like potatoes that will produce many tubers or do you have to create a plant for each tuber?
@Gardenfundamentals1

I would remove the small new tubers, grow them, and by fall they will be large for harvesting.

*QUESTION* - So, I watched this video on starting Taro from the skin & top/bottoms. Have you ever done this? I have to change the water everyday because it gets funky. Some pieces are starting to mold as well but are still firm. My Husband was able to find huge Taro at Walmart of all places (London, Ontario). You mentioned cinnamon powder to help with the mold. Do you just sprnkle it on the affected areas? Any other ideas? This is the video that I watched - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u5F4qe5abTI.html

Why wouldn’t you just cut off the bottom half that’s rotten and then plant the top with the new growth in it?
@Matt-yg8ub
@Matt-yg8ub 2 года назад
Once the ‘bulb’ starts to rot the whole thing starts to rot
@Gardenfundamentals1
@Gardenfundamentals1 2 года назад
You can try this. You need to remove all the rot, and then harden off the cut with something like sulfur.
