Here in Michigan before first frost I winterize mines by cutting plant back, shove corm & root system deeper, than cover with leaves or mulch. They triple in size every year!

Where in Michigan? Are they next to the house? How many inches of mulch?

@@sugeluv7013 Flint mi. I gotta bunch in yard, next to house, some In full sun & some in shade. About 2 to 3 inches of leaves or mulch.

Thanks for your lovely video- very clear and helpful. I have elephant ear in a large pot that I let grow indoor during winter. It did not add any new leaves but kept the old ones quite healthy. I am wondering if I should cut the plant to the base now in early April before I put it outside and let it start growing again or am I too late in cutting it down to the base? Thanks in advance for your help!

How long has it been? Typically you don't have to do anything but you can add extra moisture around the plant by watering the foliage.

I live in Florida & I have potted Elephant Ears. So how often should I water them & when should I take them out of the pots?
@TheThriftedPlanter
@TheThriftedPlanter Год назад
Hi there! You can probably leave yours in pots all year. As long as your temps are above 46 degrees they can continue growing or go dormant in their pots. I give mine water generally every few days. I check to see if the top inch or two is dry and give it a drink

I am in Kentucky. They have us listed as a 6B area. Where in the yard do you advise to plant the elephant ear bulb and do you put anything else beside it?
@TheThriftedPlanter
@TheThriftedPlanter 2 месяца назад
I would plant them where you have well draining soil. You can plant them next to anything you'd like. Be aware that as they grow larger they can shade out other smaller plants

How many bulbs should I put in my 18”-20” container? (Colocasia esculenta)
@TheThriftedPlanter
@TheThriftedPlanter 2 месяца назад
It depends on the size of the bulbs but if you have small bulbs you can put 2-4 and if you have a large bulb I would only do 1-2

what if you started the ear from cuttings? I pulled it up last year out of my brothers yard, it had roots not bulbs. what do I do?"

Does it have a bulb now? They usually start with a small bulb then it develops into the big bulbs were used to seeing.

Is that a Hawaiian Maui Gold? How did you get it that huge? I have some that I can barely keep alive. I have had to cut them at least twice! Spider mites got them and when I repotted, they wilted.
@TheThriftedPlanter
@TheThriftedPlanter 11 месяцев назад
These were labeled as Colocasia Esculenta. I buy my bulbs as big as I can find. I think that helps along with keeping them watered and fertilized. They can be testy especially when repotted. How's your plant doing now?
@tranquilitywithdd
@tranquilitywithdd 11 месяцев назад
@@TheThriftedPlanter Mine were sold in the grocery store, looking as gorgeous as ever. I have never purchased the bulb. I changed the soil and made if fluffier so I will see what happens, also these don't have bulbs, they look more like an Alocasia come to think of it. They are gorgeous with soft papery leaves but woah are they difficult.

what to do when your plant get too much rain water and it gets so big that the roots are starting to grow out the pot some of the plants are falling off big pieces I repotted and it just get more bigger should I get rid of the elephant ears cuz if I separate them I can get over 100 I live in Georgia it's been raining a lot at the same time I get a lot of sun

How often do you water when in a pot? I live in Texas, partial shade
@TheThriftedPlanter
@TheThriftedPlanter 11 месяцев назад
Depending on the temp every other day to two days. If it’s overcast my plants are drying up as quickly as a full sun day. Also depends on how big your pot is. Larger post hold water longer than smaller pots.

@CarlosFlores-gq6ew 7 месяцев назад
I grow mine in the pond waterfall with just river rock for media no soil. I live in west Texas it gets very hot in summer and cold in winter. My plants clean the water and the fish fertilize the plants.
