I have loads of lavender both English and intermedia varieties here in my eastern Colorado garden. English lavender especially is very hardy. We are a zone 5 so our low temps can be minus 10 to minus 20 Fahrenheit. My English reseeds all over and I've had some plants for 20+ years. Absolutely one of my favourites!

Hi Lee, in England the seedlings can sit outside no problem - if there looks as though there’s going to be a frost after rain then I’ll just put them under a cloche so they don’t get wet. It’s wet and cold they don’t like - just one of those is fine.

Nice green growth is a good sign. I’d wait now and let them flower - then prune them back as soon as the flowers are spent in the Summer so there’s plenty of time for new growth and flowering the following Summer.

This must be due to your sandy soil? I've masses of Lavenders, some still small, one old one was a cutting from those we had in 1974; they are all in pots (various reasons why). I have never found a seedling. Have you ever had Lavandula 'Blue Ice'? It's a terrific tall and sturdy plant, late flowering. I'd give you cuttings but ... !
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 года назад
The steps and pathway have a hardcore foundation with the blocks then laid into a layer of sand - so these seedlings are rooting into the sand - it works really well! I like the sound of your 'Blue Ice' cuttings - maybe at a later date!

Sorry to hear your lavenders aren’t doing well. The want a very free draining soil - add in sand/grit, lots of sunshine. The don’t like an acidic soil, so adding a little lime to the mix would help. They don’t want to go totally dry so watering is a must if it doesn’t rain. In Winter they can stand very cold temperatures as long as it’s not wet - cold and wet will kill them. How about trying one in a pot with these conditions? Good luck.

Thank you so much for sharing nice video sir. What is the purpose for putting gravel? Does this Apply to every pot plant?
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 года назад
I put gravel in most pots, it's not absolutely necessary but I like to: It keeps the moisture away from the stem, it stops the compost flushing out of the pot when I water, the sun doesn't get to the compost to dry it out and also it can look nice and give a 'finished' look to the pot. With bigger pots I use bigger gravel. Thank you Jagdish for an interesting question.

Yes, all the pots stay outside. I am in zone 9a so as long as the soil is very free draining there isn’t a problem. If your Winter is harsher then make sure the soil isn’t wet AND cold - also putting the pot next to the house will keep it warmer. Lavender can survive very cold Winters.
