I always enjoy your videos Everest, and frankly since you may have been one of the first grow channels I subbed I've learned a ton from you. I love the balance between overview and occasional deep dive. For me it was the right balance to familiarize myself with a topic before committing research hours, and thank you for that. Also I'd just like to say that it constantly cracks me up to think that you are the mythical unicorn regular customer at the Hydro shop who is actually really there for tomato fertilizer and tomato accessories. Keep on keepin on man. BTW second on the PLC LEDs. They're ever so legit. Too legit to quit. Legitimacious. Ok I'm done. Cheers

@@Just4Growers Hi, do you think I could eliminate the hotspot in the middle by adding a garden shade cloth, so the light will give off a single uniform ppfd number across the whole board?

today the best are 940w CMH DE. you can go 45 cm and under. the cri what cmh creates is nearly sunlight cri 100. the best best best led in 2024 has cri 90 only. the efficiency of the cmh double ended, 5% better than single ended cmh, you can only reach with samsung led chips and the cri with nothing. cmh is efficienter than all other LEDs in 2024. 315 watt single ended cmh is enough for 1x1m, dimmable 190-315w. you can get more yield with same watt leds, but half of the cost for the lamp itself. last thing what i can say, only the osram RED leds can go 10000 hours life. all other red leds can go max 2000 hours life. how can a led lamp with red leds included have 50000 hours lifetime? can someone of the led lovers explain?;D idont speak even about the uv chips they are poorer, the main thing about uv in led is, that not one plastic reflector in the world is uv safe in long term, but all led lamps with uv chips have plastic reflektor. nice one. hahahahaha. cmh isnt hotter than leds. only the samsung chips are cooler an efficienter than cmh. all other led chips are inefficienter against cmh.

Firstly, this is a really interesting and insightful comment so thank you for taking the time to share. I love CMH and DE-CMH and enjoy great results from them. (I still use CMH, DE-CMH in winter.) Nothing beats my 315W 4K CMH (incidentally, with a CRI of 95 !) for vegging up robust and vigorous plants, especially during the cooler months. However, The Color Rendering Index (CRI), is a tad anthropocentric for true plant talk. While being an important metric for assessing how accurately a light source displays the colors of various objects in comparison to a natural light source like sunlight, its relevance in the context of horticultural lighting is relatively low compared to other metrics that are more critical to plant growth (but I appreciate the general heuristic of sunlight being the gold standard for our noble indoor endeavors.) By the way, Nichia make extremely high CRI diodes (their ‘Optisolis’ range scores close to 98) but they’re more likely used in high-end designer clothing retail outlets rather than indoor horticulture. The minimum distance between a DE-CMH lamp and canopy is determined by lamp output and reflector design while environmental factors can round these figures up and down. A double-parabolic like Adjustawings can’t be beaten for close proximity placement. I would be very interested to know the L90 of the Fifth generation of OSLON® Square Hyper Red LEDs by OSRAM. They quote a Q90 of 100,000+ hours but not the same thing. Once again, worth noting the L in L90 stands for lumens, another anthropocentric metric, but what can you do? :) Big indoor light loving heavy fruiting plants? DE-CMH + DE-HPS for the win. Unless you like lollipopping. lol indeed. Enough of my rambling, thanks again for refreshing the lighting conversation!

Howsit bud, I love your videos even if I have to slow them down 😂 the lighting planner in your description works with flash player that’s obviously been decommissioned by adobe, now my question is… is there any other resource that could help me out? Im running 6x 630w cmh fixtures in a 3m x 3m area ( 3m x 2.6m canopy) and im running into a lot of issues with sensor readings going off by as much as 5’c when lights are on but levelling out at night time when they’re off. To me this indicates hotspots in my room, im running a checkerboard configuration between 3100 and 4200k bulbs and im concerned that the different kelvins are giving off different btus between them possibly? Or my lights are to close to the walls reflecting heat? Im lost and looking for some HID guidance please man 🙏🏻

been testing these double ended lights last coupe grows. dont like them. way over priced and no bennefit in yields for the extra costs. the hoods with them i have suck, makes hot spots and shadows with 2 reflective shields in them, the smaller inner one make shadows. and then the ballast system keeps eats hight in the room with just 8 foot ceilings, end of the day, any more yield is actualy paid for with the more cost to the equipment. i see zero diff compared to my other 8 hps lights

Awesome video, love the effort you go through with all that stuff you do! For the LED, get in contact with Gene from Grenegenes Garden here on youtube, he has a company called pacific light concepts that manufactures light on the base of Cree COB leds. Also go have a look at chilLED Grow lights, other LEDS, similar amazing specs! Just from what i can see in your video it seems like you got one of those "china leds" with cheap 5w epistar chips, they arent awful, but they are barely any better than single ended HPS. Or, if you want to DIY this, which is what i would recommend, go have a look at Growmau5, hes the go to DIY guy in that regard ^^ anyways love your videos keep it green :)

+Crustcheese Hey amigo, very happy to see you and thanks for chiming in. I will certainly reach out to Gene and I love Growmau5's stuff - always stop what I'm doing when a notification comes in from him! You're gonna love a video I've got in the works - where I look in more detail at the diodes that are used in some of the fixtures I'm using, power consumption, output, efficiency and, of course, sharing my experiences growing with them for a few months. What's really surprised me so far is the different hanging distances that various fixtures require. Some 6", others 3 feet - and broadly comparable wattages. Also - there's how hard the diodes are being driven, the form factor, the quality of the power inputs and heat syncs - this is going to be quite a journey isn't it? :)))) thanks again - peace and happy growing, Everest.

HID (particularly CMH) is better for quality due to the superior UV + IR output. And CMH runs at pretty much the exact same efficiency as the top LED fixtures (around the 2.0 umol/W mark). The only advantages that LED’s have on CMH is: 1) less heat (however this might actually be a DISADVANTAGE if you grow in cooler climates) 2) you don’t need to replace a bulb every couple of years, but the much higher initial cost of the LED units means that it will take about 8-10 years before you actually start saving money. And when you factor in the increased quality then it’s really a no brainier (unless you desperately need to reduce temps in you grow space but even then CMH don’t actually put out much heat at all!)

The Adjust A Wing DE 600/750's are killer and produce far less heat than you would expect (in that format as just seen).. Be careful of cheap 600W DE lamps though. This is the only DE 600/750 lamp that matches the Gavita 750 for watts/par ratio. The rest we have tested are far less impressive.

How much does the spectrum and efficiency change when dialing down those 1000 watt double ended fixtures to 750 or 600 watts???
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 7 лет назад
+Jeremiah Wilson Very good question. I need a spectroradiometer to answer that definitively. Maybe I should start a crowdfunding campaign? Lol. What I can tell you is that I understand the lamp has been fine tuned for as close as you can get to optimal for both wattage settings. I will see what data I have from the manufacturer as a starting point ...
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 7 лет назад
+Jeremiah Wilson I double checked with the manufacturer and it is a true 750W DE-HPS lamp. The important thing is the e-ballast has been tuned to give a broad range of high efficiency between 600 and 750 watts.

Very informative video Everest. I like the idea of going with smaller wattage lamps, but our new rooms are 8' x 12' with 12 ft ceiling height. How do you think the Adjustawings Hellion would work out with such tall ceiling heights? Keep the videos coming!
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 7 лет назад
+John Mcneal Thanks John. Your 12 ft high ceiling would just mean the adjustawings would be hung from longer cords and you enjoyed more potential vertical space to play with during the lifecycle. 6 x 600/750W fixtures in your space would work very nicely for light-loving crops.

Well done! Another great video. A few light measuring questions... What possessed you to drill that huge piece of particle board? You said you use an MQ500 meter, does it have a USB connection for data recording? How do you record/analyze the light data from your meter?

+Franklin Rand Apogee's SQ-520 is a PAR meter which plugs directly into your computer's USB port and you can download free software on Apogee's website - www.apogeeinstruments.co.uk/downloads/ I logged the measurements manually on a spreadsheet and did the number crunching on that.

Hey Everest! Love how in depth and informative your videos are. I haven’t seen any videos on an issue I’m currently dealing with. I see people growing with 1000w hps in tents all the time with air cooled reflectors but no matter what I’ve done to my environment the intensity right under the light has always been way too much. Until I realized that when I looked at my G-hood, my bulb is vertical vs everyone else’s own being horizontal. If I switch to a different horizontal bulb hood, would this fix my current issue? Or should I just back down my digital ballast to 750w and ride it out?

+bobby blues Hey Bobby, I did everything by the book. (Followed manufacturer's guidelines.) I'll drill down into infrared and what super spreaders actually do - particularly, why they're very handy for light-loving sub tropical species - especially heat sensitive species native to higher altitudes. Now that we have DE HPS, I'd definitely try them in double parabolic reflectors with super spreaders. You can actually get to 45 cm (17.7 inches) with a 750W DE HPS and super spreader. Can't wait to show you all the data. And we will let the plants do the talking too of course! :)
@cheeseface99
@cheeseface99 7 лет назад
your the man! obviously the lower the light the better the intensity (even though the par readings were all above 500 at 2ft tall) but the less spread.....why did you not choose parabolic reflectors? are the adjustas less problimatic heat wise then the aircooled fixtures ?
