What is infrared (IR) radiation? Which grow lights emit infrared and is it a good thing or a bad thing for your plants? We look of the best and most popular grow light technologies: LEDs, HPS, DE-HPS and try to understand how radiant heat (near infrared) could be interacting with your plants to affect crop quality and performance-and also how reflectors absorb and re-emit IR.

U make it seam as if IR is just to heat up your plants. It's not. It's not like u to leave out important information. We know that blue and red light is optimal for plant development, but research conducted in 1957 has shown that combining blue light and red light with far-red/infrared light (700-760nm), led to an increased rate of photosynthesis due to the Emerson effect. The protein Phytochrome is the only known receptor that is sensitive to far-red/infrared wavelengths. Plants use Phytrochrome to regulate when a plants is to switch from vegetation state to flowering, and the time of flowering, due to the length of daylight or exposure to artificial light.

I love this. I hope there's more of a focus on the positives of IR... I know many people are used to fighting the heat, but now with LEDs we have a new problem, not enough IR and many growers run into nutrient deficiencies because of the lack of IR spectra with LEDs especially in cooler areas! Also the changes in genetic expression!

5:15 vs. 6:00 - Pushing your bulb in is necessary, better performance and penetration is the way to go - put a short plant directly under each bulb to increase the lamp to plant distance in the hot spot, or use a Rail Mover to increase the penetration and evenly spread the heat and light. Use CO2 and 'GreenUp' liberally.

Here's an idea, if you are worried about the IR that water absorbs, why not put a water "filter" below your light? A one inch thick box of acrylic filled with water should do the trick.

Is it worth, using an incandescent light bulb, if my growroom is slightly too cold? Currently i'm running about 120watt leds. I've got enough space for 2x e27 bulb fixtures. There are 2 different types of light bulb available: 60watt and 100 watt. atm im still in veg but if they surive the transplant shock i will switch to bloom(in about two weeks). sry for bad english : > ) Any suggestions?

May 2022 led lights have made massive improvements. UVA 380nm is common near IR 730-760 also. Plus red blue green which looks sunlight white 400-700. Still hoping to see led hit the IR 700-3000nm. But technology has improved a lot since 4 year's ago when this was posted.

Everest Fernandez Hey... another great piece of info for our library of knowledge. As per your suggestion i got the laser thermometer (santa send me a PAR meter!) amd confirmed the following... Room temp is 24.... inside thw tent 27-28... and the top cannopy of my heavy annual light loving plants is about the same as the room (tent) temperature. I am using 2 300w leds inside a 4x4x8 tent... got a 4 ' extractor... the constant pattern is the tent will always be 3 or 4 degrees higher than the room where I got the tent.. The manufacturer claims their LEDs got IR diodes... but I dont know.... cool thing is that plant inner temp is at no more than 28 C. I read in a couple of websites of some LED manufacturers that plant temp should be 28-30... given the reason for keeping the room temp higher than what it would be needed if u were running cool HOT DE lights like the ones u got. I am just a newbie learning feom the pros. pura vida amigou!

So the IR is vibrating the water molecules, increasing the heat load so should the target AC temp be based on plant leaf temp? and how do you factor CO2 into this?

*Superb Video* I recently replaced my 1000w Gavita light Reflectors to the wider spreading Gavita W150DE reflectors to help with issues of not being able to raise them high enough which I thought was basic heat stress or light intensity.. this video just *cemented* for me that I made the right decision as its the IR radiant heat that was probably causing the most problems if I understood what you was explaining correctly?
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 7 лет назад
Jordy Kingston Thanks Jordy - yes, the small "deep dish" style reflectors can trap a lot of heat a re-emit a lot of IR - as well as the fierce 1000W DE-lamp itself which, if not placed far enough away without anything to deflect the IR, is more than capable of overloading IR and creating radiant heat issues. Good move!

@tripzero0

All absorbed photons contribute to heat. One should not think of IR as heat, but all absorbed photons instead, visible or otherwise. For examples, microwave photons are not IR but still heat things up so effectively, we make ovens that use them. UV photons are not IR, but they are energetic enough to break up carbon chains, cause burns, and even destroy DNA bonds.
