Just a tip for anyone trying to grow carrots in denser soils with heavier clays and such, if you plant seed radishes first they will churn up the first few inches of soil for the carrots to grow. The radishes get picked far before the carrots come into action.

Last year I let a bunch of carrots bloom in the summer, which attracted a great variety of insects to observe. The plants went to seed, and "self-sowed" in the garden beds, growing over a dry and cold winter. The new crop is the best I've ever grown, and I didn't have to do a thing!

I harvested all straight carrots last year so I’m doing the opposite of what’s recommended this year. I do want to harvest some “comedy shaped veggies”. It won’t affect the taste but give something for our family to laugh about during the harvest season later in the year. As much as it’s hard work sometimes, gardening should also be fun!

Can you multisow carrots?
@bhalliwell2191
@bhalliwell2191 Год назад
@@lunargoddess2002 Conventional gardening wisdom says no, that carrots and parsnips, both, put out too long a taproot too early in their growth and are far too resentful of having those roots disturbed, to trust that you'll get a good harvest. Conventional wisdom predicts forking and twisting which, if you're a market grower, is generally undesirable. That said, if I wanted to attempt the experiment *as* an experiment of multi-sowing carrots, I think I'd begin by sowing those little, round French market carrots, known as "Tonda di Parigi" (or "...di Parisi") in Italian, and simply as "Parisienne" in French. They're about the size of a ping pong ball or a salad radish at maturity, and being round they're not too upset by heavy soils if that's what you're dealing with. If I were not unhappy with the results and wanted to know what other carrot varieties I could multi-sow, I'd next try one of the blocky, heavy-bodied carrots like "Oxheart," which was bred to handle thick, heavy soils. (I'd try to amend the soil, too, to give my carrots the easy and adequate drainage they prefer, no matter what variety of carrot I tried to grow.) From there, I might continue to try multi-sowing carrots which were getting a little bit longer and a little bit more slender until I found the carrots which just refused to tolerate multi-sowing, but I believe the further you get from a short, round or stocky, very thick-bodied carrot (which doesn't mean *small,* it means more length proportionate to the carrot's girth or the size of its shoulders) the more likely you'll get forking and twisting and as Ben has shown, some very artistic-looking vegetables. Good success to you!

feel that! altho we had somewhat of a monsun last year and our harvest was ONE (too early) tomatoe, three green bell peppers (start of october), actually quite a few cucumbers and as many potatoes as I planted - the rest rotted. I found a even bigger, extern garden for us and all my "pocket money" sinks into it! But I am confident to say that next year I will start of my seeds in a proper underground greenhouse!

Great advice! Thank you. Have you ever tried to mix carrots with onions in the bed? They shall protect each other from their special flies. I love carrots in patties with oats. Or mixed with zucchini some flour, egg and spices they make great "Rösti" (= similar to hash brown?). Some sour cream on top and it's a taste of summer garden. 😊 I still had some fresh carrots in January on my little balcony. That was great.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 2 года назад
How wonderful to have fresh carrots in January. :-) I have grown onions with carrots before, to help mask the smell of each other's pests. But I think the main advantage in doing this is that the different-shaped leave confuse the flies, making it harder for them to hone in their preferred plant.

Thank you for this insightful video on carrots! My grandmother used to sow carrots together with radishes. Rashishes germinate quickly and mark the row and are ready for harvest when the carrots show their leaves. I did not know that the carrot root fly does not fly higher than a foot above the ground. Then I will have no problems on my balcony 😅. I read in a German book on seed saving that an mixed culture with subterranean clover will repel the root fly. I will try it out this year...
@GrowVeg

Yes, the carrot flies aren't the best fliers - though the wind can sometimes blow them off course. Good luck with this season's crop of carrots.

What a lovely video! I have a method for warming soil, killing the weeds, and helping the carrots germinate. I put a piece of stiff, clear polycarbonate roofing material over the bed for a week to warm the soil, and it gets so hot under that the weeds just die. Then I also water my trench before sowing, then cover the seeds, and finally put the polycarbonate on top of the bed. This holds the seed in, prevents birds and mice from eating them, gives all the warmth and light necessary for germinating, and gives me a clear view of when the seeds sprout. then I put brick alongside and raise the polycarbonate up to protect the seeds until they're strong enough to fend for themselves. It works beautifully! I love your videos, thank you so much for taking the time to teach, especially in these really frightening times of food shortages!

What a great introduction, carrots really can be a wonderful crop if you know what to do! I worked on a farm that considered carrots (we did a small test crop in a 40 square foot area). We read a lot of research beforehand indicating that seeds can be planted incredibly close together and still grow to maturity. Our variety grew to be 1/2 of an inch in diameter, and the seeds could be planted exactly that far apart. It was incredible, when the tops of the carrots showed through the dirt they were perfectly lined up with their neighbors (we used a small wooden box with 1/2 inch spaced holes to get the seeds in exactly the right spots quickly, as the area was so large for hand planting). It was a really exciting harvest, I never would have expected the carrots to grow that large while touching, but the ones that we grew further apart were the exact same size, it was truly uncanny. The farm ended up closing the next year because the owner wanted to move, but the carrot trick rests in the back of my mind for when I have enough space to grow root vegetables again.

I forgot about some carrots that I planted last summer. The other day I took a walk around the garden and bent over the container they'd been in. When I noticed a bit of orange peeking up, I dug down a bit and found that the inside of each carrot had disintegrated, but the outer skin was fully intact. 😂 It was the weirdest thing, pulling up these delicate, transparent orange carrot skins without the actual carrot inside them!

Break into small pieces then sprinkle all over my carrots and salad greens when they are still small. The sharp edges of the eggshells cuts the slugs like a blade and they die! This was absolutely fantastic (as are most of your tutorials BTW)! You've converted me into being a carrot fan! :) After a few failures, I'm going to try growing in pots this year.

Thanks for the tips! I grew carrots last year and for being my first time I was surprised how well I did! Though I now know to keep the carrots a bit more seperate now! I had too many baby carrots last year!

This is such a great insight to growing carrots. I have been enjoying them in my garden for years now. There is nothing like having your own grown carrots for meals long after they have been harvested. Any information can help in my quest. And this type of video really helps keep my motivation high. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you! I’m planting carrot seeds in my raised containers on my apartment porch. Along with other seeds. Pray for their success. 😁

Thanks for an energizing reminder of caring for carrots! We have raised beds and have not had to deal with flies nor slugs however using a cover to warm the soil may help us a harvest sooner, It seems to be delayed 3 weeks from the average. As always, we appreciate you. Happy Spring planting.
