June marks the start of the summer growing season in much of the U.S., and there is an abundance of crops you can plant to take advantage of long days of sunshine and warmer overnight temperatures. Baker Creek's Shannie McCabe shares some of her picks for great heirloom varieties you can sow directly into the garden in June!
For more detailed planting information for your area, check out these resources:
Old Farmer's Almanac: www.almanac.co...
University of Georgia Extension: extension.uga....
Virginia Cooperative Extension: www.pubs.ext.v...
You may also want to consult your local agricultural extension service. They're a wealth of knowledge!

North Central Arkansas zone 7b. We are about to reach our triple digit temps. All is planted, second run on radishes and looking for the squash to be ready soon. Watermelons started from seed are HUGE plants and the deer ate the wild flower barrier that surrounded them. Second sowing of those troops is in the ground. Love the video.

Also, don't forget if you are planning a fall crop, now is the time to start planting your flats indoors/in the greenhouse for brassica plants and other fall plants like Asian greens that might be good to overwinter. It takes 6 weeks from putting seed in the flat to the time you start thinking about planting out in late July to early August. I'm looking forward to trying some tatsoi this fall and winter, along with giant winter spinach and corn salad greens! Ivwas surprised at the fact that my cilantro overwintered through the snow and everything, with some of the seeds that had set last year sprouting super early this spring! I harvested the Slo-Bolt Cilantro all winter long!

Combat gardening! 😂😂 I’m gonna use that!! I’m south of Houston, the bugs down here are something special. Found something that actually works! I mixed neem oil and Dr Bronner’s peppermint soap. We had a leaf minor plague, and I lost SOOO much. After I tried it, I won the war. Last year I had an army of aphids, not one this year. My new favorite bug mix also kills squash bugs. 😱 I had a squash plant 2” high, and like 10 bugs fighting over who is crawling on it. Note: spray your soil as well. After I figured that out, it actually stopped the sourced. Also note: keep your mouth closed when spraying, bugs come flying out fast! Your mouth looks like a nice dark place to hide. Hope that helps! 😁

Yeah... 60 degrees on June 12 and rain, rain, rain. My corn looks sick, my zucchini looks like I just planted it, and I'm guessing my potatoes will be little balls of rotten starch. Im on a city street but have a full garden right out front of our brownstone type building.Neighborhood loces it .but I use to have tons of honey bees now hardly any & I find alot dead all down the side walk anyone know why? Is it because someone is spraying because I use NO chemicals!! Theres a park down the street would they spray there? I'm in zone 7a and my growing season might only have 3 more months because we sometimes have frost in September. What can I grow that matures fast?
@Lochness19
@Lochness19 3 года назад
Okra, cucumber, zucchini and green beans are all pretty fast maturing. I'm in 6a (near Toronto, Canada) and directed sowed some cucumbers a few week ago since my previous cucumbers took some cold damage in late May. I've also been direct sowing okra, green beans and sunflower in the past couple weeks. I direct sowed some Valencia peanuts a couple weeks ago too, which have started sprouting now. My zucchinis are getting pretty big, I have some smaller ones I started later, but I'm still thinking of planting more in late June or early July for a late summer/early fall crop. I planted tomatoes, peppers and eggplants from garden center transplants a few weeks ago, but I also direct sowed a few Tiny Tim tomatoes last week that are now starting to sprout, so you can still start tomatoes now, most varieties take 50-70 days to mature. I recommend putting seeds in moist paper towel (with towel folded over/on both sides of the seed) and then putting that in a ziploc bag or plastic container to speed up germination, especially for slower germinating seeds like tomatoes and peppers. If they're seeds of warm weather plants (ex tomato, okra, summer squash, pepper, cucumber), then you can leave the ziploc bag in the sun or in partial shade so that it's warmer to help germinate them even faster. Imo the main things you're probably too late to start now are sweet potato, watermelon, cantaloupe and peanuts (and if you're starting from seed, it's probably too late for peppers and eggplant too).
