We compare the most common reflective finishes used in grow rooms. We look at a HPS and LED lighting system and demonstrate the benefits of using a good quality reflective surface to maximise the amount of light reaching your plants. More light = higher yield so this is very important!
Test results for HPS setup (LED is very similar)
Quantume (PPFD) sensor reading for the following setup:
No walls: 640 PPFD
Wooden wall: 680 PPFD (5% increase)
Matt white wall: 750 PPFD (20% increase)
White mylar wall (same as glos white paint): 750 PPFD (20% increase)
Silver Mylar (generic): 800 PPFD (27% increase)
Silver Mylar diamond pattern: 800 PPFD (27% increase)
Grow tent lining Lighthouse tent: 840 PPFD (33% increase)

Very useful and elemental video thank you. I will continue with the white lined budbox pro even though silver would be better, just because I find silver hurts my eyes. Good info like this allows people to make their own decisions.

First of all thank you so much for your passion and honesty. I'm researching the market to find out what the latest and greatest is. No matter what choices I make I will find a way to help support your channel either through a donation or a purchase from your site. I am considering making my own lights LED strips extruded aluminum I'm going to check out your site right now and see if there's anything that I can possibly use. Whether my purchases today or many months from now I just wanted to say thank you for being so thorough and so helpful. Thanks again.

Thanks Matt, I checked out your channel and subscribed. I'm going to watch your videos on hydro pepper production. I'm looking for advice on the best nutrient solution for our upcoming grow test with chili plants. Any advice on what to use for good flavor and yield?
@MattGarver
@MattGarver 6 лет назад
Personally, I use Dyna-Gro Grow 7-9-5, which is a complete one-part macro/micro nutrient with pH stabilizer, and cal-mag. While I have not used them personally, the Masterblend, General Hydroponics, Maxi Grow, and other nutrients seem to do well too. Regarding flavor, a mature chili from a flavorful variety is a good start. Soil grown plants, when water stressed can produce some of the best flavors. For quicker results indoors, growing in rockwool blocks or small containers helps. Topping right after the 3rd or 4th leaf node helps to change the shape of the plant. You want a short and wide plant, with a good canopy. Also, trimming off the leaves under that massive canopy helps. Otherwise those under canopy leaves that are not getting light are just wasting the plants energy. In addition to small pots and effective shaping, using a wet/dry cycle with extended dry times will stress the roots without killing them. This is often another trigger to start the flowering and fruiting process. Don't be afraid of trying to switch peppers to flowering sooner than thought, as pepper plants will continue to increase in canopy size even after starting to fruit. Dryer air and more air circulation, combined with more interspacing between plants, helps push peppers toward fruiting too.

Great video Would reflective material be much help for the sides for the veg stage when plants are small?, as all my leaves receive light from above 2 x 600 watt MH for 18 plants grown a week apart on stands to keep the canopy even and to save space as well as having a continuous grow I don't see how light on the edges of the leaves would help? I harvest one plant per week 9 in flower, also if the light is powerful enough to penetrate the canopy, how does side reflective help, as there is none separating the plants in the middle of the tent I have 18 vegging, for 18 weeks to get bigger plants and keep with the 9 week flowering cycle 9 week veg is not enough I have a tent for the flowering stage, to separate the light cycle from the vegging plants that are in the same room it has 2 x 1,000 watt HPS Thank you

Shane thanks for making these videos. My grow area is 5.2 meters squared. I am using a 1000 watt metal halide. When I lower the light to what I think is the optimal height achieving a ppfd of 750, the perimeter doesn’t get anywhere near the light they need. Question is.... should I use two 1000 watt metal halides to ensure proper light coverage. Any help is much appreciated.

Hi shane. What’s the difference btw 75um and 125um Mylar beside the measure? Is the 75 semi transparent or is it lightproof too? I already have matte white walls, no light leaks, should I buy the cheaper 75um one? Thx
@evzevz06
@evzevz06 Год назад
The thicker one reflects more IR back so its better for ceilings of the room if you don't want to be the only house in the snowstorm with a clear roof. And its tougher/longer lasting, less rip/tear prone and if its backed with white, its cleanable. Thin mylar doesn't last, it goes see through over time becomes brittle and its noisy, thick stuff looks the same after 10 years

I've had pretty good success using orca paper. With almost no hotspots and incredible reflection. The only thing I don't like about the orca paper is how expensive it is. And when you use it as a flooring it delamination within about a year. However on the walls it works great.
