mosquito bits are supposed to work very well, I just bought some for gnats, hopefully works for carrot fly and pepper maggot? I use neem cake mixed into seed soil (smells like pickled onions, a natural insecticide) or hydrogen peroxide 3% (4 parts water - 1 part 3% HP).
Good idea! I may stick to sticky traps and hydrogen peroxide for now though as I'd have to do a ridiculous amount of sand spreading for all these plants 😂
I did this with my houseplants, then changed to horticultural grit ,seems to be working, also block the bottom with a layer, eventually they'll all hatch and die. Neem oil works aswel 👍🏻🕊️
Hi i recommend treating with hydrogen peroxide solution and top dressing with diamatuous earth along with sticky traps. This should get your gnat problem under control. Keep up the videos mate.
Had a massive invasion with FG’s in house last year. Tried everything.. only thing that worked was when moving seedlings outside when it got warmer. This year was no way putting up with that again. I sterilised the seed soil before starting anything .. Thank the Lord no FG this time round 🙏🏾😊
I think they've come from the Coco coir I used. I think... Or could be the compost. I'm using sticky traps now and they're covered in them. So they're working. I'll be using the traps from the very beginning next time
Your seedlings look awesome! I grew two Red Robin micro dwarf tomatoes, one has produced a number of ripe red fruit. Very adorable! I would be very interested to know how you make out with the war on gnats. It's what makes me hate to start seeds indoors. I've started watering and spraying all plants with a neem oil soak but looking for any and all things i can do to prevent or eliminate the little monsters LOL
Nice one! My dwarf tomatoes haven't done very well, the plants are looking really bad. I'm slowly getting on top of the fungus gnat problem with sticky traps though
I've got x2 USB computer cooling fans hooked up on a couple of shelves. It's not much. Perhaps I could use an actual fan to blow air onto the whole racking system
Omg right fungus gnats have come to life in my strawberry pots like crazy. So yellow stickies (I buy by the hundred 😅) and hydrogen peroxide to the rescue (hopefully). I think if roots are bigger they should be ok 🤞🤞. Oh good job on the sweet potatoes 🍠 hope they grow well. Have a simply amazing week Jim stay warm and happy growing, Ali 🌦️🇨🇦
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit concerned. Some of the younger plants with smaller roots may be at risk so I'm keeping an eye on it. I may even visit the garden centre quickly tomorrow to get a few sticky traps whilst I wait for the others to arrive 😂 I have some hydrogen peroxide, 12% solution. Shall I dilute to 3% apply to the soil?
@@downtoearthwithjim I buy actual 3% and dilute that half and half with water so yes definitely water it down. The soil may foam I never worry about that, but I’d try a plant or two first before doing them all 🤞🤞
Don't know why your growing cucumbers, melons, courgettes, squash at this time of year .I don't even sow mine till the end of April . Your going to end up with huge plants too early Jim 😢
I'm hoping the greenhouse will be warm enough around mid April to house the squashes and any other big plants like the cucumbers. Then May for everything else. I think we will be okay 😊 where abouts are you located?
Cheers, I'm just keeping an eye on those blistered leaves due to excess water being stored in them on the tiny tim tomatoes. I'm getting my actual tomatoes sown right now 😂 these are just a few earlier sowings. I think I have too many 😂
@@downtoearthwithjim totally. pretty sure it's the bacillus thuringiensis (BT) in it that makes Mosquito bits so effective , I believe it kills the larvae ,
mosquito bits are supposed to work well. Hello from soton :) Ive been using neem cake mixed into seedling soil, its supposed to really help with gnats.
