This is my first time to grow Callaloo..I got the seeds from my sister-in law's friend in Toronto..We are all from the Philippines, living in Canada...I wasn't expecting much when I planted in a big pot in my garden..Even talking to my senior neighbours, it's like we're not interested...I transplanted maybe 12 seedlings on the ground few weeks ago and still young..My sister cook Mung beans soup and we put those Callaloo leaves..What a surprise, it was so yummy (almost similar to our chili leaves back home, not easily available in Canada)..Today, I transplant maybe 30 seedlings on the ground, for the remainder of our summer..

I’m growing this. My neighbor is from Jamaica and she told me she cooks with sautéed onion, garlic, thyme, tomato and scallion in a frying pan until slightly cooked then adds the cut up calaloo with peppers and allow it to simmer down. Sometimes add coconut milk as a part of the sauce. I made some a few nights ago with added coconut milk and it was awesome!

@@Danfoodforest hehehe! Well, at least you have an abundance to harvest! I have several plants that reseeded from last year (1st time growing). I was told it was Haitian Spinach but my neighbor said they call it callaloo. I couldn’t find any info on Haitian Spinach but found info on callaloo and it has the amaranth seed tops so I’m going to call it callaloo. I’m thinking Haitian spinach might be what they call callaloo in Haiti. My husband enjoyed it too! He gave it a 10 out of 10!

Beautiful start to the video. I try to do something different from time to time. My main crop in the summer is tomatoes, but tomatoes are really not a staple food. I just enjoy fooling with them. I love the fall garden, as here, fall allows you to grow so many other things that are closer to being a staple. Good vegetables, like the brassicas, root crops, and greens of all types. I will look into callaloo. Take care.

Your callaloo grows like mine. Although I'm aware that MotherNature has a great variety of strains of different plants, I get so baffled when ppl say they're growing callaloo that is being attacked by pests, but theirs looks like a different plant to Me. And MINE are in fact pest-RESISTANT, so I can never relate to their experiences (and I don't DARE tell them otherwise because I'm careful not to share unsolicited wisdom with ppl whose CHARACTER I don't know these days).... And so lowkey, I think they might NOT even have callaloo. I also visited a CH'room filled with self-proclaimed herbalists (ALLEGEDLY).... and they were discussing "amaranth". It was as if they knew NOTHING ABOUT IT!! Thank Goddess I'm not quick to believe someone JUST BECAUSE THEY SOUND like they know wtf. I wanted to join the stage and educate, but I could tell that they "knew everything" and I like to stayInMyLane these days unless I know I'm NOT dealing with sociopaths. #letthembumptheirheads All that aside, you have THEE LARGEST VARIETY of fruits that I've ever seen in one garden that I wanna try!! And I'm SO JEALOUS THAT YOU'RE FRAMED BY ALL THOSE SEED PODS!! I don't have a long enough season for My moringa to seed, but I wouldn't be mad at MotherNature if she Blesses Me to see it one year!!

Thanks for you video! I live in Mississippi zone 7b, and started my callaloo seeds late and now they are 2-4 inches tall. Can I put the seedlings in the garden in October?
@Danfoodforest
@Danfoodforest 8 месяцев назад
Unfortunately, it's probably too late to plant callaloo seedlings in the garden in Mississippi zone 7b in October. Callaloo is a warm-season crop, and the first frost in Mississippi zone 7b is typically in early November. This means that your callaloo seedlings would likely be killed by the frost before they have a chance to mature.
