some tips for cheaply being able to maintain a temp for a grow room or grow tent. Can work with any kind of lighting unit. I use LEDS but works even better for MH or HPS
I love thinking of idea's & little projects like that. Like not just going to the hydro big bucks shops but instead searching pet stores & Big Lots & others for plant stuff or anything that interests me. Learn & do not just what the tens of thousands of setups look like.
Hi there, cold air does not hold more water….. Basically think of the air like a sponge….. The warmer or hotter it gets the larger that sponge becomes…. For example you can hold the water content constant, And as the temperature lowers the relative humidity will go up and as the temperature increases the relative humidity will go down…. Notice in this example the water contact never changed it was the temperature of the change the change in the capacity of water in the air and that’s why it is called relative humidity. Just wanted to share and you can see the relationship between the air’s water constant and temperature on a psychometric chart.
So I am leaning towards this idea to heat tent already but how do I combat humidity dropping to 29%? I am going to be using Kracky method so I am hoping the moisture will help offset?
Thiago Ribeiro ... That is not completely true what you wrote, my friend. If you have a room at 30 degrees celcius and 50% hum. and then lower the temps the relative humidity will rise. That is common knowledge. And yes, the reason being, that hot air will contain more water than cold air. But that is not to say that "hot air has more humidity, cold air is dry"
K C ... The main reason that it is easy to control RH in an cold space, is because your plants does not transpire a whole lot of water, and your intake of, (potential humidity) air is limited, due to the low temps which decrease the need for exhaust.
I have had success with insulating my tent with three 2" foam board panels and draping a quilted moving blanket that is easy to fold up on the entryway to the tent. Space heaters use sometimes up to 1500watts and are a huge FIRE HAZARD. Not knocking your grow, but plants actually like a period of cool temps. Nature warms and cools naturally and if your tent dips from 80°F to 65°F during lights off that is a good thing.
I prefer to run my lights starting at 4 in the afternoon and run all night until 10 in the morning as I want the hottest part of the day heating the room opposed to trying to run it all day and then trying to heat the room during the coldest part of the night I have a few ceramic metal halide lights which keep it well warmed but not hot like HPS or metal halide do.
Same. I built a swamp cooler and really cooled the tent down to 78 even when its 90 in the room my tents are in. But the humidity is ridiculous. Dehumidifiers cant even keep up with it. And I've tried 8 different models over the years. So what I did was in the off seasons end of summer season is when you wanna pick up big ticket items like portable AC units. I just picked up another even tho I didn't need it yet but got it as a back up to my back up AC. Walmart had a 3 portable AC units left. I picked up a 10000 btu fridgeadaire portable air conditioner for 146 bucks regular price is 350. Fuckin score. I've got 3 I use round my farm house and 1 in my grow room and 2 backups now. Mind you I've been doing this for quite a while and run a perpetual grow.
Hey dude quick question ...should i ad an humidifier to the tent? 6X6X6 tent with a space heater going i am just wondering if you had any tips on that part ?? i would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks for the video. It's been a while since I've used a space heater. I recall them being very expensive to run and a touch dangerous. Have they gotten better?
what's up man nice set up! I was wondering what you do for your intake..I have an exhaust and grew in a 8x4 tent once already without an intake but am adding one this run. Any advice would help..i use LED's and live in cali
Maxwell Becker most important is to keep the airflow negative pressure...just make sure your exhaust fan is on higher then ur intake..and I would keep a vent cracked open a little
Your a bit confused about air and humidity dude. I'm sure someone's told you this already but cold air holds less moisture. Warm air drys things because the air itself hold MORE water. What you said to start with is true but your understanding of why is wrong.
What is the heater. Having a hard time finding a heat that does not have stitch. The two I do have require a push of button to actually produce the heat. When plugged in it’s on stand by.
Hey bro can you give me the exact make and model of heater I've never seen one that doesn't have any sort of light emitting from it ones I usually see glow red
I see it's been almost 2 years since this video was uploaded...I'm just curious if it still works for ya. I believe the wattage of the space heater far exceeds the rated wattage (500 watts) of the thermostat. Any issues?
I assume that your tent is wide open and I do not see any type of charcoal filter or intake on this is this correct? I was always taught to have more air leaving your ten then coming in so that the walls suck you in a bit and that's the way I have mine but I had to move mine from the basement up into my house area due to the coldness of the basement at this time it's lower than what you have it's like 56 or so. And I've tried to use heaters like what you have I even had oscillating ones and by the time that they kind of heat up it's already vacated all the air out of the tent and sucked in cold air behind it??
you think this would work with my tent outside in northern California winter months? day time it's still lretty warm but nights can get dosn to like 50 degrees fahrenheit
what is that device u have hooked up to it heater to keep the temp regulated? question 2 how much can u buy them for? question 3 how do u install it and where can u buy one
daddy long d I was just using a reptile thermostat..and all u do is plug it into a outlet ..plug in ur Heater into it and set the temp.. just leave ur heater on all the time and the power to it will be cut off until it drops to the set temp u pick ..then when it gets back to the correct temp it turns off again
My Life in HD thank you yeah i seen tht n rushed them plants into the flower room thank god i wasnt using it at the moment but in tht room humidity is at 48% n temp is 72
oh and one more thing I have never seen a space heater that doesn't have some kinda glow from the heating bars???? where did u get it is it a special type?
daddy long d ..most of them have a glow but the small ones I use from a local walmart haven't seemed to do it and if they do its so dim it hasn't affected my light cycle
hi, im a week into my grow and i hav the temps down good. 80-81 when lights are on and 68 when lights are off but my rh wont go above 30 but never drops below 30 either. just stays there. i want 45-50 but i have a small 4x2x5 tent and my 2 plants are in 5 gallon buckets.. and with the fan there in no room on the ground for a humidifier. what should i do? can i leave water in a bowl in the room or something along those lines?
@@8thebaseball Use a mop head in a small tub of water. tub shouldn't be no more than six inches in height maybe the size of a saucer around, soak the mop head, ring it out into the bucket 50% approx. water left in the mop head. Place in the bucket, helps with RH.
lm having the same problem with it bing could outside my plant tent is on the back porch it will not stay warm inside have to turn up the heater an have to turn up the thermostat then my heater trips out an have to reset it will this be a good idea if I put a blanket over it to hold in some heat if not my heater stays on pleas help me
Earl Webster try setting the heater on a med setting and using a thermostat..just line ur tent best u can to help hold heat in and try not to open alot to avoid letting heat escape
I've done the same. Throw a blanket over the tent when lights off. Its 3 degrees here. House is steady 78 but can drop a bit. Heat mats can dry your medium out super quickly so I wouldn't go that route. A blanket is a pretty good insulator. I should say it's a big farmhouse here and I meant it stays pretty steady throughout the house but does drop at night. Mines not outside tho. I just haven't had much luck with heaters so I try and keep the tent as close as the ambience in the room. Again good quilt will help nicely.
I'm having a really hard time with controlling humidity...i have a portable ac unit in the room outside the tent keeping it around 72° and around 45% rh which I'm told is good for flowing but when the tent is closed the temp jumps to 79 -81° and almost 100% rh! i bought an inline fan with scrubber filter but till that comes in i just leave the tent open and light proofed entire room. Will the fan fix my problem? and do i need an intake ducting for fresh air? and if so, how do i light proof that? thanks and great video... happy growing my friend
kevindflowers234 the biggest killer to humidity... is ventilation and airflow.... keep a good fan blowing and make sure to have a cross air flow with negative pressure...vents open and a strong exhaust fan sucking air out ...the scrubber one will be good if bigger enough for the tent.. also trying keeping the temps a little higher then 72 go for 75 76 ..u will see warmer temps are easier to keep rh down...worst case if those don't help u may need a dehumidifier
GrowingInHD thank you very much... that's what i have planned when i can afford to... right now it's a money game for a hobby of household veggies... nothing serious like a cash crop... if i use some ducting to open up the bottom of the tent for some air exchange how can i light proof the big hole the ducting makes? i was thinking of using a scrunched up air filter like for your house.... any ideas? thanks again... sorry to bother you.
if ur grow tent has a bottom duct port run the ducting through it make like a rainbow with it with the out side ducting almost touching the ground about 1/8 off should work do this for both sides and make sure you are running carbon ducting heat exhaust to highest top duct port u have if ur still running hot i very cheap way to cool room is taking a soda bottle with holes filled with ice on and attach to back side off a normal fan
Wouldnt running that heater just dry out your plants...iv herd ov people using radiators in ther op only to have leaves start to dry out and go brown...so how would you go about combating this issue
I suspend my space heater in the tent and make sure it's not blowing directly on my plants. I use a humidy controller and I have a humidifier hooked up to it.. it's set to come on if the humidity drops below 53%
I'm having a problem heating my tent but I'm assuming I'm shit out of luck.... Long story short, it's almost February and my tent is in my garage which is not heated so it's freezing, about 0c right now. I bought a 150W ceramic heat blub designed for reptiles but it only brought the temp up about to about 9c... I was thinking an oil based heater but I'm afraid the tent will just catch fire somehow, how safe is the air heater in the tent? My tent looks the same except it's 3x3x6 ft. No plants are in it yet as I'm doing my seedlings inside where it's a nice 23c and 60% humidity but the wife wants it all out of the house come veg time haha. HELP!
So I went out and grabbed the same thing a ceramic space heater that does 750W on medium and 1500W on high. I wired it to a thermostat and power cable. Very easy to make one yourself and much cheaper, just youtube it anyone is interested. Heater comes on to warm up to 25c, once it drops 2-3 degrees it kicks back on. I found my sweet spot which sits around 22c-26c.
Sound mate. I just have mine on low heat when my lights on for 12 hours at night time the heat is ok. It's when the lights off during the day it gets real cold
That's where putting your heater, whatever it may be, behind a thermostat controlled outlet. That way you just leave it on and whether or not the light is on, it'll kick on the required heat in order to keep your set temp. I'm also doing 3 sets of 6/2 for light cycle keeping the temp more consistent. I hear good things with the 6/2 method.
GrowingInHD if your getting good buds from your growing keep doing what your doing. I'm new to growing just got my tent and light set up having trouble with my air venting out but I'm confident I'll figure it out. I have a buddy helping me out and he says I'll have to go thru some bumps and bruises before I get it down pat but in the long run it will be worth it. I'm doing my first grow with mersh seeds before I plant my hydros I found your video very helpful if you have time to one on the air going out on how to correctly set up the duct work. thanks
Michael inthe216Land thanks...glad.ur getting into growing..u def come across some problems with learning but first most part it's pretty easy to get basics down...air is pretty easy I would stick with keeping a vent open on one side towards bottom and on opposite side at top put ur exhaust fan...this will allow a good cross breeze and the fan at top sucks put the hot air that rises up. that's mostly it keep ur fan on a controller and if temps are too high increase the fan power to suck out more air..if too low then lower the fan down
