Hello everyone. Today we will grow some crystals, again. As in the previous video, I will try to describe the whole process of growing the crystals to you.
First, we need to choose the material of which we will grow the crystal. Essentially, practically any substance is suitable for crystal growth.
For example: protein crystals, crystals of iodine, metals crystals. Even air can be turned into a crystal when it is cooled to a certain temperature.
For normal conditions, the best suited are inorganic salts. And for this time I will grow crystals of potassium alum.
However, from personal experience, I would say that copper sulfate is the best substance for growing crystals at home. Table salt is not the best material. Bluestone is easier to buy and you will get beautiful blue crystals using it.
To begin, let's take any vessel and pour there some of our salt. Next, pour hot water into the vessel and keep adding salt until it is no longer dissolvable.
In this case, we get a saturated solution. Be sure to add hot water, to be safe with the proportions.
Different salts have their own solubility curves.
Solubility curve is a measure of how many grams of the salt can be dissolved in a 100 ml of water at a certain temperature.
Also, for all of the salts the information is different. Once we have prepared our saturated salt solution, it has to be filtered while it is still hot.
Filtering is not required. However, if you buy the chemicals in a garden shop, not in a special shop, the solution must be thoroughly cleaned from possible impurities.
I would still recommend to initially use pure chemicals.
After the filtration, let's leave our glass for a few days to let the crystals form.
Crystals form as a result of the change in solubility of salts in the water when the temprature changes. Excess crystals, which cannot be dissolved in the solution, they fall to the bottom of the cup.
After a day we may notice that beautiful crystals were formed at the bottom of the beaker. These crystals will be used as seeds.
Seed is a small crystal that is immersed into the solution, which will continue to grow new layers of a crystal on top of it. Now let's merge the solution into another beaker.
Next, choose the most beautiful and large crystal from the mass of crystals that were formed on the bottom of the cup, or the one that is easiest to tie on a thread. I could also advise here to use a thin fishing line instead of threads.
Once we have tied a crystal to a beaker we pour our saturated solution of salt back there. You can tie a thread to a regular pencil and hung a crystal in a glass using it.
However, for myself I've decided to use a system, in which the glass will be protected from dust. I think this is not necessary. At the moment we can only wait for the crystal to grow.
Over the time of the growth of the crystal, it will become bigger and bigger. This occurs because the water from the solution will gradually evaporate, thereby increasing the concentration of the solution.
Since we have a solubility curve, we can learn that the excess material that cannot be dissolved must go somewhere. And this is the substance that forms our single crystal.
If we had not hung the seed, the crystals would have started to fall anywhere - on the bottom or on the walls of the beaker. And one more thing to mention!
During the process of crystals growing, liquid from the cup will gradually evaporate, and therefore the crystals grow. But, that's also a problem.
During the evaporation of liquid it comes to a certain time when there won't be enough solution in the cup anymore, and the further growth of the crystal will be impossible.
To solve this, once a month or once in every two weeks it is necessary to add a saturated solution into the beaker. The saturated solution must be prepared the same way as it was before, by adding salt into a hot water.
However, you should not add a warm solution. The saturated solution should be the same temperature as the growing crystal.
Also, once a month or once every two weeks, I recommend filtering solution to maintain its cleanliness.
Over time, in the solution some specks or other dirt might occur, which can screw up the crystal.
Over time, my crystals from potassium alum become bigger.
As you can see, they have acquired a very interesting form. And now, after about 3 months, I have grown two beautiful crystal of potassium alum. Facebook: / thoisoi2

Use distilled water, use fishing line to tie the crystal up to avoid crystals growing on the thread, cover it up because dust will mess with the growth.The best place to grow crystals fast is in a warm and dry environment. To mix the crystal solution, I use a glass rod from a chemistry set. Sorry, I’m a bit rusty, it’s been a few months since I’ve grown crystals.
@user-mh2bw4hu3o

Oh, and one thing, NEVER COMBINE ANY CHEMICALS WITHOUT LOOKING AT THEIR FORMULAS FIRST, I once tried to combine sodium tetra-borate with ammonium di hydrogen phosphate. It made a gas cloud comprised of ammonia. I was poisoned and had a really bad day.

@@user-mh2bw4hu3o well I only had aluminum powder from a really bad DIY kit and it seems like it's kind of doing something? It's really hard to tell because I don't know what is to be expected lol. Thank you for the tips, the fishing mine is a really good idea because I was kind of worried about having regular string show.

couldn't you theoretically grow a crystal to a massive scale this way given enough time? imagine growing one big enough to sit on, you'd likely need a very large container for it to grow in but that would be very interesting in its own way.

Hello ! First, thanks for the vid, I used it to create my own Crystals and here I am to share the results. The advices are correct except one: filtering IS indeed required.I understand why you mean if this is absolutely certain that the water and the Salts are pure BUT in most cases it is not and plus, you have no guarantee unless you check. During the first try, I did not filter the solution. I obtained huge crystals which could not be used, then I obtained a lot of agglomerates of Crystals around my seed during the precipitation. During the second try, I did filter and the results was absolutely perfect. I know this is an old video and again, I appraise your job, so please keep in mind this is only to share experience and for the people who will read the comments afterwards. Thanks and I hope the work is keeping up!
@yentlcloud

how long does it take to get crystals the size of a pingpong ball? and can you use seasalt too? do you need to keep filtering every few weeks>?
@eireannClover
@eireannClover 7 лет назад
I am not the author but I can share with you an answer since I have been making my own crystal for more than a month now. You definitely need to keep filtering the solution BEFORE putting the gem in and yes, every few weeks too. Also, the reason is that at some point, the gem will stop growing and crystals will precipitate at the bottom of the glass (don't know the name in English). So I also make the whole solution (without the gem) dissolute again before letting it get cold and putting the gem back asap. In a word: it is not a passive process. I thought it at first but the results were very far from my expectations. Now the crystal is perfect and each edge is more than 1 cm edge. I think you can go faster, the reason is that since I am pretty busy, even though my crystal has not been growing for a week or two, I take some time before renewing the solution. So it is not a fast process either, but you can get pretty satisfying results in a month. The key factor is to filter the solution and to choose the gem carefully, then let everything rest as it is. Finally, about salt crystals : yes you can make a crystal as well, actually you can make a crystal out of any ionic solution such as sulfate copper (you will have very blue color by the way). Yet each crystal form is a characteristic from the atoms of the crystal, so for example, a alum salt monocrystal is an octaedra and a salt monocrystal is a cube. I hope this was consistent enough. Please let us know is you try out :).

I found a way to simplify growing alum crystals. Get a spool of "invisible" or transparent thread. This thread in reality is very fine monofilament. Make some supersaturated alum solution. Dip the end of the thread into the solution then remove and let dry a few minutes. This will cause tiny crystal seeds to form on the thread. Put the thread back into the solution. By next morning you should see visible crystals on the thread. Since the thread is smooth you can slide the crystals up and down the thread. Find a few promising seed crystals and separate them and space them out a bit. Put the thread back in and watch the crystals grow. After a few days discard any crystals that aren't growing regularly. If you have a tall container you can grow multiple crystals at once but if your goal is one large symmetric crystal you can remove all but the best crystal. When it is time to harvest the crystal you can simply pull the thread out of the crystal so you won't have visible thread.

i wonder if you could use a colored crystal as a seed for a clear crystal and get a large crystal with a colored core
@krappa
@krappa 9 лет назад
Depends on the material. Some materials exhibit strict structure in their solids and therefor need an almost perfect crystal to seed, while some materials are very forgiving and take anything they can to grow crystals on. It could be possible but any 2 different colored salts probably wont give that effect. Best would be if you could find salts with the same metal in them that have different colors, though rare, it would probably be the best since metals almost always have similar structure in all their salts.

That's an awesome idea! It might not work on the first try but if the seed does not resolve you might wind up with a multi colored cluster! Such a cool idea, really makes me want to try it. Thanks!

Depends on what you're polishing them with. If you take it to a belt sander, probably gonna break it, if you hand sand you may be fine. Understand that because you use nail polish to protect the crystal, it will eat the top layer of the crystal. So you may polish it lightly.

LOVE your guys accent, if you think about it, an accent is just a dialect we live on the same planet and your expression of the alphabet causes your english to sound different the same is true about people a few states away, or half-way around the world
