Sigh, yes, no snow. We finally got some colder temps and a few patches of snow a little on its way. Record warm December in Z5a, WI. Mitza Creek Farm up north has mums, tulips and wild honeysuckle shrubs growing and no snow. Halloween 36*F, Thanksgiving 41 and Christmas Day 52! 😮. Not normal. I repotted houseplants outside on Christmas Day.

Happy New Year to you and Bill. Hope you have a wonderful growing year and we'll be looking forward to your weekly garden videos. These months are flying by so before we know it, will be time to start indoors soon. We've had up and down weather too, so I've been trying to keep an eye on things and do a little winter watering in the meantime.

Susan does your husband trim back the onions as you do to the leeks?
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 6 месяцев назад
Yes, he does. He lets the leaves get maybe 4-5" tall, then trims them back down to about 2" in height.

Good morning happy new year I have a question I plant in countainers and squirrels destroy everything that I stard any idea of what I can do
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 6 месяцев назад
Hello, Miguel. That is so frustrating because squirrels are really hard to deal with. I'm guessing that you are growing both vegetables and flowers in your containers? Here are a few things you might try: 1. Repel squirrels by either interplanting some strongly-scented plants such as garlic, onions, marigolds or aromatic herbs with your other plants in the containers; or by using an organic animal repellent, but read the label first and make sure it's safe to use around edible crops. (very important!) 2. You can scare them away from your pots by either using a motion-activated sprinkler that is attached to a hose; when it detects motion, the sprinkler sprays the area that you have set on the motion sensor. 3. This is a challenging solution but build or purchase wire cages to place your containers in. 4. Don't intentionally feed the squirrels or put out birdfeeders because the seeds attract them. I hope this will give you a few ideas. Good luck!

Nice video! Seems to me your raised beds stay in really good condition. They seem to stay in perfect condition. I've obviously missed it but what kind of wood are they? What is your secret? Thanks!
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 6 месяцев назад
Hi there. Here's a link to one of my videos on our raised bed garden: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LP8wClgRk5A.html. We use untreated wood, usually pine, fir or larch. The wood lasts an average of 10-12 years before we need to replace the beds.
@milkweed7678
@milkweed7678 6 месяцев назад
@@SusansInTheGarden Yes, that is a good video. But 10-12 years is longer than any of my beds have lasted. Maybe it's the weather difference from there to here in central IN. Thanks
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 6 месяцев назад
@@milkweed7678 Possibly. We have a fairly dry, low humidity environment. Take care.
