Hi, planty friends!
In this video, I show how to prune your tradescantia plant as well as how to propagate new plants from cuttings! Included will be helpful tips I've learned through my experience with certain "finicky" varieties like tradescantia fluminensis variegata as well as tradescantia mundula rainbow/tricolor.
best, jo
Varieties I prefer to root in water:
Tradescantia Fluminensis 'Variegata'
Tradescantia Fluminensis 'Lavender' - does well with soil propagation as well
Tradescantia Mundula 'Rainbow/tricolor'
Varieties I prefer to root in soil:
Tradescantia Pallida 'Purple Heart' (callous first)
Tradescantia Zebrina 'Multi-Color Discolor'
Tradescantia Fluminensis 'Aureovariegata'
Callisia Elegans (callous first)
Callisia Repens 'Bianca' *
* Also does well in a propagation box with long-fiber sphagnum moss. Roots basically overnight, and you don't have to struggle to keep it afloat like you would with water propagation

thank you so much! i recently bought a tricolor cutting on etsy and it was so beautiful when it came in. within a week, i was killing it! i had given it too much water at first, so then i tried to dry it out and now my leaves are flimsy and have holes in them-i think i gave them too much sun. i’m pretty sure my roots were rotting! so my last resort is cutting under the one little node that i had and water propagating it... hopefully to grow more roots that are actually healthy so that i can try again! i hope that this works because this plant is so beautiful 🥺

Outstanding advice. You have great knowledge concerning plant care and maintenance. Tradescantia's make one of the best beginner plants as they are such prolific growers, they are very rewarding and forgiving. Just keep them out of reach of children and pets as they are mildly toxic. 👍

I have a nanouk I dipped it in rooting hormone and stuck it back in soil that was kind of damp not during watering day. Hope it doesn’t rot like you said. I didn’t let it callous, in hindsight probably should have. It’s been a couple days or so still quite perky. I think the rooting hormone while it’s not necessary is best to use to avoid root rot as usually they have agents to prevent bacteria and fungal growth. I mean might as well to give it a little boost to increase chances.

Apart from the clear information I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed your to the point intro/outro, your full sentences and that you edited out any 'uhm's. It makes such a wonderful contrast to long-winded videos with a lot of bla-bla! And thnx for the info about propagation. Now I know why soil-propagation didn't work on mine. Also, I was wondering how you know when it has enough roots to transfer from water to soil.

Loved your explanation of different methods of propagation. My zebrina grows so fast. I take cuttings and make new plants to give away but my nanouk is struggling. It has new growth but the edges turn brown and crispy. Any tips for helping that variety? Is water propagation better for that one since the stem is sturdier?

I had a similar problem with the nanouk. I water propagated, but be sure to let the cut callous before doing so. If it is browning, could it be perhaps a light issue? How much light and how much water is it getting?

Hi I have Tradescantia Tricolour that most of the leaves are turning green now. If I propagate them, would I get variegated new shoots or I will still get greens? Thank you in advance.
@j0annepan
@j0annepan 3 года назад
It depends - if there is still subtle amounts of pink striping, it’s likely that it will produce more variegation later on. If it’s fully green, you can trim that off to induce growth on the rest of the plant + keep the fully green cutting for a new pot of reverted stems :)

Have an unplanned nanouk propagation that broke off and need to know how to handle that variety... From the video I am guessing - let it callus then soil prop?? The main plant browns off leaves so quickly and has FINALLY been growing faster than dying so I'm worried about getting it wrong
@j0annepan
@j0annepan 3 года назад
Yep! I got some nanouk cuttings in the mail recently and I water propped them. I’d say, if you want to be careful and monitor actively, go with water propagation. Soil could potentially carry bad bacteria/fungus that could hinder root development. It’s important to let it callous! I left mine out for ~1 hour and periodically checked; it actually took a long time because of its super thick trunk. If you’re having browning leaves as an issue, there could be too much light or humidity that could be an issue. This plant hates water on its leaves more than any other tradescantia variety
@chrisbarry9345
@chrisbarry9345 3 года назад
@@j0annepan The funny part is that the browning stopped when I increased humidity and increased light 🤣🤷‍♂️... I did do them both at the same time so it's hard to say which played a bigger role but the plant was as good as dead now it's growing. It's still browns when anything goes wrong.. Anyway I made the mistake of soil propagating it back into the same pot before I read this I guess I'll decide if I want to just roll with it or take it back out
@j0annepan

Nanouks are so strange. I feel like half 30% of people say they're the easiest plant ever and everyone else (like me) is constantly battling against leaves turning brown and dying off... I finally got mine on the positive side of that battle by putting it inside of a mini greenhouse with high humidity and a lot of light. But it's still an on and off battle that needs to constantly be monitored. Just today I saw some additional browning which was my hint that it had to be watered. When I checked just a couple days ago it seemed very wet now out of nowhere it was dry and there was browning

I think they do better in bright indirect light, and like to dry out between watering.
