Tradescantia Nanouk care and propagation

The tradescantia nanouk (wandering jew) is a difficult to grow plant that propagates very easily. Yes, that statement sounds contradicting but in this video I explain why the care is a bit challenging (bottomline: they rot too easily). I explain the growth pattern and explain (with visuals) why this is a plant you have to keep pruning and propagating to keep it healthy and beautiful. It is easiest to propagate them straight into soil, but I show you how you can also propagate them in water. I also dabble with a bit of leca/semi-hydro in one of my propagates.

I bought a tradescantia zebrina. About a year ago and it has grown so much I have propagated it over and over and over again I've given it away to so many people my mailman my delivery guy anybody that comes to my house leaves with a tradescantia zebrina LOL I have a few others and I love how quickly they grow and their little flowers are so cute thank you for this video. I wasn't sure about getting one of these but thanks to you I think I'm going to try it. I was on the fence about lecca but now I think you have made up my mind for me I don't think I'm going to try it I've got a few hundred dollars invested in my plants not only that but my heart is invested in my plants also so I don't want to take a risk of losing any of them. I think I'll stick with what I know thank you very much I look forward to watching more of your videos you're a great guy.

For Tradescantia Sillamontana, it’s essential to keep the roots dry. I grow them under white LED lights and managed to propagate successfully. Feed them with a diluted seaweed fertilizer and they are thriving. I dip the stem in rooting hormone first and put them in a glass jar with the tips submerged in 2-3 mm of water only. Top up when the jar is almost dry. It will grow roots in about 7-10 days. After that I grew them in a cactus potting mixture with 20% sand to prevent root rot. So far , I haven’t encountered root rot yet. I use the same method for the Nanouk.

Great video Sean! Tradescantia are a lot of fun. You’re right they’re sensitive to being overwatered and leaves will crisp up when they receive too much water (making us think that they’re dehydrated and want more water). Especially the varieties with very thick succulent stems/leaves like Nanouk and the Sillamontana (the fuzzy one). The Sillamontana is a desert species, it enjoys a fast draining airy soil mix, lower humidity and drying out between waterings. They can get leggy with longer internodes if they’re not receiving enough bright light/sunlight. More light will keep the plant looking fuller with more leaves, shorter internodes. It looks like you’re doing an awesome job with your babies. ☀️🌱

Thank youuuu. The Sillamontana is so adorable I cant wait for it to grow. Its a bit slower than the other tradescantias.

Thanks for this video! For tradescantia there are so many wrong care instructions. I found it most happy when I forgot to water it, haha. I think we can't say enough times that this plant hates to be overwatered. Most other tradescantia varieties are the same. Just got a tiny cutting of this species at a local plant nursery in Berlin and I hope it will thrive. 🌿💚

i've got one in a big hanging basket at home. It's been in the unheated lean-to conservatory, which regularly gets down to 1-2'c in winter, and the thing is bullet proof!! In fact I must have only watered it around 4 times between november and april. Also, the colour is vivid bright pink and the growth habit is compact too (must be the cold)

I got a Nanouk off the discount rack. When I first saw it I thought it was on the discount rack cuz the poor thing had obviously been dropped of his head. I took him home thinking maybe my mom could help me nurse him only to discover that he was in much worse shape than I thought. He was getting bad root rot and we had to get rid of most of the plant, but he’s now growing back very well and sharing his pot with a Zebrena actually.

Yay thanks for the video cos I just got my own nanouk! I am obsessed with trandescantia hehe :) that pink one at the end is T. spathacea. For my T. sillamontana, I just leave it hanging under a tree where it gets a lot of bright light. These are actually grown the same way as succulents here in the Philippines. I barely water it and just let the rain handle it and each stem is almost a foot long! I should probably propagate it like you have done here with your nanouk. So inspiring honestly cos im usually anxious when it comes to propagating my fave plants hahaha
