I am a horticulturist and this is my tip. -when using drip irrigation, run and peg down the drip irrigation then plant your small seedlings using the drip holes as markers, 1. You will get your plant spacing perfect and 2. Your plants will be right on the dripper’s where they need to be. So many people do it the other way round and I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve seen dripper’s know where near the root ball of the plant and therefore does not receive any water.

My public library has a seed library now, where people donate and can take seeds for free. Seed librarys are a great way to exchange seeds.

I pick up bags of leaves left at curb sides for trash pick up. I put them in the garden walk ways and wood chips on top of that. It looks nice, suppress weeds and it is right next to the garden to be used once they have broken down.

I have recently been watching your videos here and found them very informative. I started gardening during covid lockdown to keep myself, my family, and my mum busy. However, there weren't enough gardening materials available- only available online orders, and takes weeks for the order to arrive. That's where I utilized free and recycled materials available locally. Now, After two years of learning about gardening, we are fortunately covering our backyard with green vegetables and spending more time in the garden than indoors. I wished I had started gardening a long time ago. One thing I used to hate was when I had to visit mum, she had always been in a garden so we spend fewer hours indoors but now when I visit mum, we spend more time in her garden.

Please don’t forget to wear hearing protection when using your lawn mower, leaf blower, etc. anything over 85dB (vacuums, hair driers, etc.) needs protection so not to loose your hearing.

Another great video Joe.The tomato cages I would not cut the bottom to make spikes.You lose a foot.I would take re bar ans ziptie them.I like making raisedbed out of palletwood.I give other gardeners in my communitygarden suckers.I do not take them off.You should come to Brooklyn,NY to Floyd Bennett Field Gardens Association.To do a show about communitygardens around the country.
@ggwtv
@ggwtv 4 года назад
Hi, Charlie. Yes, there are nuances to how you customize the cages to suit your needs. Not using the spikes definitely gets you a taller cage! I'll have to get to Brooklyn, NY and check out the gardens there as well as other Community Gardens. We did a show on Community Gardens early on. Perhaps it's time for an update. Thanks for your message.

The broken bag tip is great. I do that and then mix my own potting soil. If possible, we use the empty bags for garbage. We have also received free wood chips, and it saved us so much $$$. I’ve added shredded leaves to my beds for a few years now and it has made such a difference to improving my heavy clay soil. My plants love it! My husband uses the thick spring grass clippings to mulch vegetable beds. It forms a thick mat that holds in moisture and prevents weeds.
@nathanfokianos9557

When getting wood chips and leaves be sure of the type of chips and leaves. Black Walnut chips and leaves can prevent plants from producing what you want to eat.

great connections, thank you. Locally, the recycle center for yard waste, chops up leaves and it breaks down to black gold over time. Also they have chopped up wood, almost as good as big box shredded bark, for me, it great to line paths in and around the garden. By putting down cardboard first, this suppresses weeds and grass, so there is no other maintainance, which I love! In time it breaks down but topping it off by revisiting and picking up chopped wood makes this convenient and free! I'm planning on doing another area, cleared of dogwood and making a patio, sitting area overlooking the garden from above. I am so excited, these tips really have helped. Thank you

each panel makes one cage?? I thought each panel was 16ft long?
@ggwtv

Each panel is 16 ft. one. Each panel makes one tomato cage with enough left over to make a smaller cage for peppers or eggplant, plus extra pieces that have many uses in the garden.

Thank you for your valuable advice it's very helpful, I have a vital question, my neighbor is using deadly weed killer but now on my property, it's posing me, my weeds, my lavender, roses, marigolds, vegetables etc all of which I grew without poisons I was growing them for food, medicinal and body cleaning. Now I can't do that is their anything that I can use to protect myself and my plants. As Olivia Newton John hired doctor's and vets that have all said that weed killer causes cancer, which my evil neighbour was actually dying of and his doctor's said he had less than 2 weeks to live stupidly I prayed and he was miraculously healed from terminal cancer. Your help would be greatly appreciated thank you God bless you and your family love from Wendy Drummond from Adelaide South Australia and congratulations on your videos

11:57, he says the lawn clippings help his lawn so he doesn't have to fertilize as much. If you are using fertilizer, then it cannot be organic. Also, paper bags in the compost are not organic as there are synthetic binders that glue the paper together. Pallets usually have fumigation chemicals in them to prevent rot and contamination of product being carried on them in transport and storage.

These raised beds will probably last over 20 years! You could probably make them with thinner timber but you’ll replace every few years. So it’s counter productive you’ll use more lumber.
