Often misunderstood, bats are ecological superheroes. They save U.S. farmers over $23 billion annually by eating insect pests. Yet, there is an imminent threat to the survival of their species. This episode explores it all and how it impacts the home gardener.

Joe, I have watched and enjoyed your show for many, many year. This is the best show you have ever produced and that's saying a lot. I will have a bat house in my back yard by springtime here in PA.

I have been a Bat Conservation International member since 1992. We got to go to Congress Bridge October of 2010 but we went underneath the bridge so you could actually see them. They fly away from the setting sun, not towards so it can be hard to see them. They are also much more active in summer. Here in AZ and the South West, that sorta sucks since it is so hot (over 115º F) but I want to see them so bad!

This is a really nice programme, and particularly interesting to watch at a time of covid - 19. if we respected other creatures we might have avoided this virus. Bata are remarkable in that they carry lots of virus but don't get sick form them.We have things tearn from them.

Joe!! You have done it again! I have a bat box in my yard but it is mounted all wrong. On a tree. The box is occupied by dirt daubers. I did have many bugs in my yard when I first moved into my home because the yard wasn't planted. The first year I planted things, I noticed more bugs flying around. Then I noticed one evening that bats were flying overhead. I was elated. Plant it and they will come. Same for birds and amphibians.

I love Bats. Last year I did not see one, not one 😢 used too every year we could look forward to seeing them, then they dwindled down to just a hand full, now last year...none. what can we do to attract them, how can we make a welcome environment to attract them and entice them back to our orchards and property?

Glyphosate caused Bat decline. It will take years to recover after man quits using glyphosate & one way or the other mans poisons surely will be obliterated. JETSON or SPARTAN either way 'Gates gets VAXXED'.

🙏🏿💛💛💛💛💛🙏🏿 thank you for this video. Kindly allow me to add, among many Indigenous Peoples and our supporting Knowledge Systems, The Bat (flying mammal), is regarded as the spiritual cousin to humans (walking mammal). As such, The Bat selects humans to gift it's power to help humans see things hidden in darkness. Also, The Bat's "frightening" face and general appearance, is another gift that it empowers humans to 1. survive the trauma of bearing witness to what people do to other people in darkness, and 2. vanquish frightful and nefarious energies ("entities"), manifested by the nefarious ones or "fallen humans".

Fascinating video ! But I will disagree with one thing that the lady said about bats. They WILL or CAN get caught in your hair ! I had one get caught in my long hair & back of my sweater , when I was a child. It may have been just a freak thing or rare, but it was enough to freak me out @ the time !
@gardener5857

ellen, I'm not so sure it was a freak thing. The same thing happened to my cousin, and the bats that visit our home seem to be drawn to our body heat, or perhaps the mosquitos that are drawn to our body heat. At any rate, it seems they hover around us when we are out with them.

@@gardener5857 I am a bat biologist. And I have TRIED to get a bat tangled in my hair. All it did was tickle his nose and make him sneeze! They definitely are not trying to get caught up in hair! But if you kick up insects in the grass, they might see you as a patch of insects.

I never get any to come near me and I want them to. They never do. Of course, I generally have a bandana on when I am outdoors to keep bird poop out of my hair.
