I've been using the sansi grow lights with great success, my albo has grown secondary fenestrations and Sansi lights are way way way cheaper than soltech

How much are they?
@kkmeilicke

Me too! I combined a couple of their 36W bulbs with hanging light kits from Amazon and nice shades from Lowe's. Total for each one was about $75 ($37 bulb, $8.50 hanging cord, $27 shade, USD). The bulbs are large, so had to go with a large shade.

I bought two rehab plants at a Walmart last summer. Potted them up together. I think it’s 3 plants in the pot. It did nothing for months. I put it under a cheap grow bulb that I placed in a floor lamp. That was Dec. It has steadily put off a new leaf from each plant. The leaves have gotten so much bigger with more splits than the leaf before it. I was so excited to see my latest leaf had 8 splits and 1 inner fenestration. It finally hardened off and it’s 15” in length. I moved it into my main living area so I could see it all the time. Haha

Nice! Have you tried using a light meter to see what type of light your plant is getting? It may grow faster with more light

You don't need a grow light, just buy regular bulb with 1500lm and 4000K. lm is how strong the light is, K is the color of the light, you're welcome.

I just discovered your channel this morning when your string of pearls video popped up. My starter plant with 2 strings was producing more strings and doing great, until it wasn't. So I've been watching videos on pearls. From there I clicked to your channel and found this, as I sit staring at a a nursery bush size pot with 2 young monstera my daughter separated from her large, established plant. I've been staring at this big pot for 3 days trying to figure out what to do with these babies. Perfect timing when I saw this. I can't wait to see what other plants you talk about. Thanks.

Thanks for this informative video, Jeff! I have the Vita bulb and I love it! Unfortunately, my Monstera was attacked by thrips and has had quite a setback. Fingers crossed that it survives and I get more of those big, beautiful leaves.

Oh no! Did you have to cut it back?
@sdouglas9003
@sdouglas9003 Год назад
Yes, I cut it back (broke my heart), and used insecticidal soap. It’s an ongoing battle, but I really want to save my monstera. I’ve recently started to try to save infected plants, I used to just get rid of the plant. It was easier than trying to rid of the thrips. Thrips are absolutely the worst! Just saw your short clip discussing the beasts. Thanks! Beautiful sunflower by the way.

The amount of space you have makes a big difference with monstera. I bought a small form (I think) from a grocery store that already had nicely fenestrated leaves, but the leaves were still pretty small. It's been perfect for my little living room 🪴.

I had holes as well as slits in my young Monstera after only 6 months. My secret was to fertilise once a month water once every two weeks letting the soil dry out between watering & I have him in a South facing window in the North East of England. When it got really warm inside I will put a floor standing fan on pointing in Dave’s direction. Dave is what I named my Monstera 🪴

Great informative video and I will definitely put this to use as I propagate my monstera. I would maybe stay away from those clamp lamps. There's a lot of heat that needs to disperse from those Soltech bulbs and it has nowhere to go, which will shorten the bulb life. I try to find shades that are open around the bulb socket so the heat can rise up and away and not get trapped.

I agree, after nursing a monstera for years under weaker lighting, I chopped and propped it. After letting them establish I moved them next to, then into my main grow tent under an HLG 650R and they are QUICKLY becoming mature, multi fenestration plants. The growth is much more compact too, I wish I'd done this sooner. Give them as much light as you possibly can.

Great info, but I think it’s important to note that the Monstera that Lee has in Kill This Plant is a LARGE FORM MONSTERA DELICIOSA. It’s not the common or “regular” Monstera Deliciosa we are use to. Lee has said this in his videos. The Large Form will grow crazy huge leaves and the regular will not as the large form.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Год назад
I interpret 'large form' as mature. I know there are MANY debates on the monstera borsigiana vs deliciosa and their size difference. I believe they are the same but just just grown in different conditions. Here is a good read from Ohio Tropics www.ohiotropics.com/2021/05/01/monstera-deliciosa-vs-borsigiana/ Which ever people decide, both varieties need LIGHT!!

@@EverythingPlants Ok, I'm gonna stop stalking the comments after this one. I have a set of props from from a plant that lives in my office. The office plant gets a max of 300 FC on an app based meter. Using the same app on the same phone, the props get 1600-2700 FC. The props have frilled geniculum, secondary and tertiary fenestration, the leaves are multiple times larger and the growth is more rapid an compact. The petioles have that sandpapery texture as well. The newest leaves would make a good chest plate size-wise and there are 3 to 5 leaves per stem. I believe that anyone would assume this is a young "large form" MD. The mother plant to all of these has new growth nodes with 3 to 4 leaves per stem of maximally hand sized leaves, and only the leaves currently emerging are fenestrated (just slits on the edges). There are zero frills on the geniculum and the petioles are as smooth as eggs. I believe this would be called a "small form" MD. This certainly isn't scientific. I fully acknowledge that. I'd love to see a plant that someone is CONVINCED is "small form" grown under the summer sunlight after acclimatation, even if only for a few months.
@Orbt_

Excellent idea to demonstrate how long it takes to grow monstera. I kept wondering how long mine would take to grow its 1st fenestrations. I hope this helps: I grew mine from seed. I wanted the process. I started in Dec. 2022. So, this entailed a heatmat, a grow light, and a humidifier. I had a lot of various seedlings, so I needed those things anyway. Now at the end of August 2023, its 2 top leaves resemble the leaves that have grown of the mid cutting in your care, that you show on min. 3:37. So, it basically takes the same amount of time to grow from seed as it does from your moderately mature, let's call it teenage, mid cutting. In my case, the 5th leaf is the one that came with fenestrations. I've seen this is also the standard for growers. It takes them 6 months to get there under optimal growing conditions.

I have one grow light over my monsteras. I potted 3 together for my convenience. The oldest is about 16 months old and was 3 tiny leaves with roots, i just got my first hole this week, my baby monstera that's had to recoup 4 or 5 times from being beheaded by the dog has leaves still smaller than my pothos but in New leaf years it's only about 6 months, then my newest one that was from the grocery store 2 months ago, was stalled but it finally put out a leaf with one fenestration. Not too bad for a lightless room and one grow light above the pot. I think my phone app says roughly 1000fc which is pretty good. The bigger one got leggy since i had no grow light for about 5 months so I'm thinking of chopping but i don't want the mess of dealing with a repot since it's got established in the dirt air roots... 😬

Great info on the light, however my monstera grew mature in less than a year. However I do have 17ft windows and it sits back about 12 feet and gets high direct light all day. So growth is dependant on care , water quality, fertilizer and light, not time.

I plucked a sprout with its roots that was growing in the bottom of the Monsteras at Walmart in a miniature Dixie Cup shot glass, and that little cup is getting pretty full. How long do you think it will be before I can put it in a real pot? It's about 4 inches tall 2 leaves lots of roots just exposed its first areal root.

Thank you, this is really useful as I’ve got 5 cuttings from a Monstera at work currently rooting. One question I have regarding an established Monstera I already had ( more of a situation I don’t know how to fix ) it’s newest leaf was stunted but was the first leaf with the little holes in. Since that leaf popped out, the next leaf looked like it was getting ready to make an appearance but has been stuck in the stem ( can’t spell the correct term for where the new leaf appears from ) for nearly 3 months now. I’ve moved house in the last 3 months but have the monstera under grow lights with my other established monstera but that leaf has stayed stuck. Out of 8 separate more mature vines, only 3 have produced a single leaf this growing season but last year they were doing so well. I’m just not sure what to do, I’ve done everything I can according to the recommendations. Can you recommend anything I may have not considered?

I do know about both types and there is a lot of debate regarding them. I personally believe they are the same plant (the deliciosa)....
