A standard plastic nursery flat is 2.5" deep. I use 2" of soil in the flat. I line the bottom with paper to keep it from leaking out. Organic liquids or time release fertilizers work fine to keep the greens growing.
@@GreenGardenGuy1 That's great Bill! By the way, have you ever heard of Paul Mauriat's "Love Is Blue" on The Ed Sullivan Show, which aired on February 18, 1968? I just came across the song for the first time and somehow I feel nostalgic for it as if I've known it all my life.
@@leonardoalfonso7080 Yes, I am familiar with "Love is Blue". I'm not surprised that you feel the song has been with you. It is very much part of the American cultural experience. Almost like "Old Susana".
Great tutorial Bill! In the summer when I can’t grow greens here in Napa, I occasionally pick up a package at the store- 4 ounces for 5 bucks! Generally I eat tomatoes, cucumbers, and string beans for salad in the summer months though. Can you get romaine to grow there, or does it bolt?
I grow Romaine here. I don't have too much trouble with bolting because the climate is cool and moist. Due to heavy clouds the central stem will enlarge on some types. Compact forms of lettuce work best for me here.
I recently took up a diet aimed at restoring my gut microbiome that was damaged by covid. Rules include eating at least 30 plants per week. High fiber foods and food with strong colors and polyphenols are a major part of the diet. The baby greens were planted to add purple to my salads. The results have been just short of amazing.
Looks great, as do you! Greens seem to be some of the easiest and quickest food to grow. We've been doing well with a lot of red lettuces here, had 3 frosts this week! Polar vortex gone wonky. Built a front porch this week outta scrap material and stuff off the mill. The difference in sanity is night and day. Gotta have a place to sit and watch the garden.
I've seen frost as late as June 7th while living in Northern Wisconsin. Late June is pretty late for cold. I guess I did once have some tomatoes frost on July 4th.
We would occasionally get snow in the Jemez mountains in June followed by 70 degree weather. Never 3 days of frost in a row in late June though. It truly is very Northern here. I still don't fully comprehend why I wandered over here. Certainly an odd place for someone who can't stand cold. I'd rather live in a Pacific terrarium.
@@mountain-man0 Climate effects people more than they realize. I've lived from AK and WI to AZ, CA & HI. The mind reacts differently to different climates.
Gray-C insists on getting into the act. I seldom start the camera without her coming around. I see you have a cat that looks a lot like Gray-C. Does the cat have black toe pads? That is Gray-C's unusual mark. Her tiny size is different too.
