Squash beetles are the bane of my garden 😖 I have resorted to vacuuming them off my plants early in the day. I’m so glad I don’t have close neighbors because I look ridiculous vacuuming a garden 😂 it works great though 🤷🏻‍♀️

Try putting a soap bar on a stick next to the plants the beetles are on, they hate the smell of Irish Spring soap bars!

Hi Siloe', Another great video! You said you had problems with ground hogs or marmots...I had problems with them for the past few years. A few months ago I adopted a golden retriever / cocker spaniel mix dog. I decided to try putting some of his poop in the corners of my garden and where I saw where they had dug under the fence. I am happy to be able to report that after trying the planted dog poop I have not seen a marmot since! The dog poop also has discouraged the deer from eating the hastas and lilies from my front garden. I periodically place George's poop around the front garden and I also put little sachets of his hair tied to the lily plants and voila! Deer B. Gone! I refuse to use toxic chemicals on my property, And I don't have problems with any kind of beetles like the squash beetle since I started raising chickens. And my ducks will chase you down for a slug! So now my gardens, birds, dog and I live in harmony with the heard ( 8 ) of deer. If ONLY I could find a way to encourage the squirrels to take up residence in another neighborhood! My peach tree and two apple trees were laden with fruit this year and I did not get a single peach, apple, or apricot! Blasted squirrels! Oh, well...they are cute little vermin and fun to watch.

I don't care for the taste of cucamelons unfortunately but on the plus side, the bees love the starry yellow flowers that the vine produces. Also, I don't think that I can ever eat another store bought cucumber after growing my own, the taste difference is night and day.

I planted cucamelons for the first time this year and they will have a permanent home in my garden for the foreseeable future. They didn’t seem bothered by pest pressure. They’re good for pickling and they have a nice POP to them. It doesn’t hurt that they look like tiny baby watermelons 😀

Last summer was our first cucamelon year and a trellis by the front door was IRRISISTABLE! I'm waiting this spring to see if self sown plants pop up. Thank you for the reminder to look for them!

Tried cucamelons for the first time also and I just love them. Cucumber with a lime kick. No disease like the regular cucumbers 🥒 get. We are all in on these for the future. Great vlog.

For insect control try using BT or Spinosad after sunset. They are organic contact insecticide. To be more sure for beneficial insects try spraying at night.

I was thinking of ordering some seeds earlier today and you put out a video about them. I hesitated because everyone I know that grew them mentioned that they can take over your garden if you don't watch them.
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 4 года назад
They probably could take over, especially in a tropical place

Hello, I'm glad you made this video. Those Beatle I thought were happy insects. 2 years in a row my cukes leaves just wilted. I didn't know why until today. So next year I know exactly what to do. Have an awesome day

Yes. While most insects are happy ones, some are not.

Also called Mexican sour gerkins. Too hot for them in west Texas during summer but great for fall
@stephkrunic3884
@stephkrunic3884 4 года назад
We have a HOT summer climate here in south Australia but we actually had great success last summer. Cucumbers have always failed in our gardens. The best harvest ever was 2 small bitter fruit....HOWEVER I planted cucamelons in 3ftx4ft wicking beds in the shade under a tree. In summer we get about 16 or 17 hours harsh summer sun and strong Mediterranean light so "the shade" is what we need to grow things - probably like you experience in west Texas. Do you have more shade to try? I've been happily surprised by how productive our "full shade" with extra shade cloth canopy over the top can be even when it's over 47°C!!! What are your best HOT season crops?
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 4 года назад
That's crazy hot

I believe what you think is Mexican beetle is actually a squash beetle. You can tell the difference between them by the number of spots on each wing. The squash beetle has 7 spots on each wing and the Mexican bean beetle has 8. Not that it makes much of a difference for you, just thought it was worth sharing :)

My kids love cucamelons, we have been growing them for 3 years now and their awesome, veru heavy producers. I have a very similar issue with groundhogs they are terrible, I trap a good handful every year.
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 4 года назад
Yes, trapping seems to help, but new ones always find a way to appear

Hi Siloe, so good to see another video from you. Would growing your vegetables in large pots be better than in the ground, I was thinking if the plants are up off the ground nothing else would be able to get to them?
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 4 года назад
Thanks. I've seen them climbing over some containers to eat. The unstable cages seem to be the only thing that dissuades them.

Why do most gardeners say don't bother saving cross bred vegetable seeds, because they won't produce reliably? Aren't they the same thing as F1 seeds you buy from a store?
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 4 года назад
Yes they are F1. There is just the chance they will not produce reliably especially in subsequent generations. I like to experiment. Most people just want what is tried and true.
@Tan_Z
@Tan_Z 4 года назад
@@suburbanhomestead Thank-you so much for replying! I just don't understand why the F1s from the stores are considered stable then?!
